OVH DDOS Issues?

Posted by WWS2010, 10-08-2013, 03:43 PM
Hi,

Having this strange issue with all of my OVH servers in EU (RBX). Ping is possible, but no ssh or http connections, they get refused.

On twitter there was some talk about their anti DDOS service was crashing. Any one experiencing the same problems or knows more?

Was just about to post a topic about them, our BHS Canadian servers are suffering huge packet loss and their status page is vague as hell : http://status.ovh.co.uk/?do=details&id=5559

Just to be clear: This is about EU servers

had exactly the same issue, the firewall was the issue.

http://forum.ovh.co.uk/showthread.php?t=7525

strange enough the server and service was accessible from outside of EU.

Ah sorry!

Seems like it was a DDOS in Canada too : Comment by OVH - Tuesday, 08 October 2013, 22:10PM
The network team has implemented some measures to mitigate a massive attack.

Strange thing is, there is nothing about the EU network on the status page.

There is an update saying it is repaired, but the status shows red?

Think its to do with the Marvel superheroes on standby by the sounds of their response..

The network is back to normal thanks to counter-measures but we stay vigilant."

Why are you surprised ? This is OVH . (Problems²)³

Turned out their Anti-DDOS solution took down some parts of the network, filtering all traffic except ping out 'by mistake'

Quote:
We had a problem in the rules that define the network firewall.
All traffic has been filtered by mistake.
We removed the rules until they find the origin of the problem.

First problem i had with them in about 2 years by the way.

I kinda saw that coming. Since OVH started to offer DDoS protection I saw even new anti DDoS providers popping up who were using OVH servers for DDoS protection. Even though their capacity for filtering isn't that bad, I'm certain that this service will fail sooner or later, as too many people which are under DDoS who want to save a few bucks are migrating to OVH, until they're unable to filter all those attacks, as they don't charge for the protection. I mean they even stopped selling servers on their homepage for a while because everyone was ditching their old servers and took on of the $4 ones. Free DDoS protection and servers for a risible pricing at the same time, what kind of future does that have?

What will probably happen is that they'll start charging for it.

Back in September they increased price which were for DDOS protection.

Selling thousands of cheap boxes most of which are used for DDoS attracting gaming servers. Now people are having DDoS problems. Shocking development. Never saw that coming.

It's worse than that, people are actually selling ddos mitigation services using the ovh network...

Who's doing that? They deserve to be called out...

Here you go: http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=1309624

Their website appears to be down at the moment (what a surprise), that's why I'm linking this thread.

A quick look on hack forums and you'll find 20+ providers doing that. (although considering the forum it's not surprising) You can probably find 1 or 2 on wht also.

Edit: Nevermind

I suppose we should have seen this coming.

I'm not sure how OVH can grow anymore. I am actually curious to see what moves they make next.

The OVH Anti-DDoS protection seems was a big mistake from there side and had an opposite effect.

Posted by pingperfect, 10-16-2013, 01:14 PM
I'm sure the OVH Anti-DDoS service was in theory an excellent Idea, for a small price increase everyone got protection

Unfortunately in practice and with OVH's current business model its not going to be long before it fails and when it does fail its going to fail big time

Posted by Vex76, 10-17-2013, 01:12 AM
I consider it fail long before they ever introduced ddos protection.
If you had to deal with their super-extremelyfast-hyperspeed support, you'd know what I am talking about.
