PowerVPS, large scheduled downtime Monday 4/8 2pm EST (moving entire datacenter?)
Posted by aww, 04-08-2013, 12:23 AM |
Just got an email - looks like PowerVPS is moving from one datacenter to another (somehow keeping IP addresses)
Why they are doing this in the middle of a Monday instead of late night on weekend, I hate no idea.
migration on 8-April-2013 from 2pm to 10pm
Quote:
In between that time, our Operations team will gracefully stop the VPS and the node and physically migrate the machine and power it back on from our other facility.
There wont be any change in IP address or any configurations or data within the VPS.
This will not be a VPS level migration and will be a hardware level migration for entire node, from one DC to our new location.

Would you like the knowledge your server was being transported by a tired tech in the pitch black? I wouldn't attempt a large scale migration late either. |

Even without the middle of the day, they could have done it on a Sunday late afternoon.
Also, talk about short notice, that email was like 24 hours ago which really makes you wonder about how well this was planned and how smoothly it will go.
How exactly were they planning for their customers to let their own clients know with just a 24 hour notice? |

This is true. Also have to keep in mind that their techs/employees will likely be there past the 10PM time they quoted fixing any nodes that did not boot.
The timing may suck for some people, but it's in the best interests of everyone involved that it be done during reasonable hours. You'll run into laziness towards the end when it gets too late |

... when a provider gets up and moves within a 24 hour notice, especially a physical move it smells of trouble!
I don't want to say that's the case here with PowerVPS but based on my experience, when providers do that it's either due to an immediate financial reason or a dispute with a vendor that is about to end badly for the company. A normal (healthy) provider would give at minimum a weeks notice for that kind of move + outage.
Regardless, make sure you have a backup of everything in case that move goes bad. |

24 hours is a bit unreasonable. 2-4 weeks would be fair. It does raise questions, you're right. |

This company use to be very reliable, but this unexpected "migration" without any reasonable explanation is unacceptable.

Mondays are our sites' most visited day of the week. If you're going to bring down a server, at least do it on a non-business day. Talk about a lack of customer service. 7 hours of downtime and counting. |

Looks like something else occurred to them at the last minute at 3pm today. Some nodes now moved to the middle of the week, still the middle of the day.

The node on which your VPS is hosted was scheduled for a migration on 8-April-2013 from 2pm to 10pm. However, we identified a flaw with this migration which can possibly cause more downtime. To avoid any such issues and to make sure we can complete this with out more downtime, we are rescheduling this to 10th April 2013, from 2pm EDT to 10pm EDT.
Please understand, that the decision to move and to reschedule, was not taken lightly and we are doing everything possible to make the move completed as quickly, accurately and with as little customer impact as possible. The vz move has been postponed because of a network flaw, will give us more time to concentrate on one type of node at a time to ensure least downtime during migration window.

They weren't kidding about a full eight hours of downtime either.
2:40pm to 10:40pm EST
Well hopefully this nightmare is over. |
