OVH is down in Hong Kong
Posted by alex-developer, 05-09-2012, 10:22 AM |
Hi all,
As one of my client complaint about his server from OVH, I found very interesting status: http://status.ovh.co.uk/?do=details&id=2741
Quote:
Details
Swisscom AS3303 has decided to cut the peering
(traffic exchange) with OVH. So they
cut peering at TIX (Zurich) and the traffic
always flowed through DECIX (in Frankfurt).
Peering at DECIX was also cut. The traffic
flows now througn HKIX to .. Hong Kong.
Therefore we expect that Swisscom Cut the peering
with OVH at HKIX..
We do not agree with this peering interruption
peering and so it's not for us to
fix the problem that we have not generated.

How unprofessional OVH reply to the issue with peering: "We do not agree with this peering interruption
peering and so it's not for us to
fix the problem that we have not generated"
It sounds to me that they don't care about their network, what it will be next? Power cut and the same status like: we do not agree with this power cut and so it's not for us to fix the problem that we have not generated...???
Looking on this issue the OVH is very unprofessional. |

That's interesting.
I wonder what caused the bitch fight between them. |

You should get your info straight. Swisscom are in Switzerland (doh) and have no bearing on OVH's traffic to/from Hong Kong, which is working fine...

If Swisscom chose to cut peering agreements (resulting in traffic to them going all over the place) how is it OVH's fault? |

I don't see OVH via HKIX (at least the /19 from ovh.net)

Since HKIX requires members to peer equally, with Swisscom cutting peering in closer geos traffic from Swisscom within the EU routed out to HK and back via OVH's link, adding +~300ms of latency to the path.
That isn't OVH's problem. It looks like they've somewhat solved it by not announcing routes. (Well, two now only on HKIX) but that isn't a long term solution since they obviously want Asia customers to transit via HKIX (assuming it's cheaper for them)

If you are a Swisscom customer you should contact them and ask them why they are preferring traffic destined to OVH via Hong Kong. |

I doubt OVH are really that bothered when they have their own links going in between San Jose and Japan, and new setups in Hong Kong and Singapore about to go live.

We have checked that Swisscom has announced us its network on the Amsix routes reflectors (Amsterdam). Then we are effusing naturally the traffic at this location.
Since Swisscom is not hoping to peer with us, so we are not starting any discussions about any subject with them. Thus we stopped all exchanges. We do not have any information of whether it is temporary.
Briefly, the problem could occur in the future or probably won't. Anyway, the origin of the problem and its resolve is not our responsibility.
The task will be therefore closed, even though the problem will appear again in the future.
