Ubuntu.com and some Repos down

Posted by KMyers, 04-26-2012, 09:15 AM
Hello All,
It looks like Ubuntu is seeing an overwhelming response to the release of 12.04 today. Their site has been down for almost an hour and I am having a real hard time hitting their repos.

The torrents have been hitting pretty hard.

I got the 4 main torrents pushing around 1.5MB/sec on each with spikes to a full 100mbit.

Just a warning to anyone who is planning to do a dist-upgrade. Give it a few hours to calm down. It is going painfully slow on my laptop.

Edit : If you need the 64 bit version, this link seems to be working really well - http://d3qnbzt7ix5jlv.cloudfront.net...ktop-amd64.iso

Surely waiting some day or two for the first rush to settle too.

As they always are, thats why they have mirrors.

You would think they would anticipate this and get the proper infrastructure ahead of time.

I was thinking EXACTLY this - Canonical is big enough they would have proper infrastructure!

lol. Big enough, maybe. It's still being released for free. Nobody can complain.

But people will anyway.

"FREE software, but I need to wait a few hours for the tubes to unclog? How dare they!?!? WE WILL DESTROY THEM!"

There are mirrors for both the release and repos. Not to mention you can torrent the release. I dont see what the problem is, this happened's every release.

There's always a huge hit on their servers at new release time....even more so on this one because it's an LTS.

But all seems to have settled down today.

am i the only one that waits for the mint version to come out? For me the day ubuntu comes out usually marks the countdown to the mint edition being released

Your not the only one waiting for a fresh release of Mint. I normally run mint on all of my personal stuff (and stock Ubuntu + Gnome on one of my work machines).

Linux Mint is a great option too, I agree. Even though I don't neccessarily agree with some of the choices they make, it's tons better than Unity, and the wonder of Linux is everything can be changed to perfection!
