noc24 down

Posted by Hinoserm, 04-07-2012, 07:53 AM
I have a server in co-location with NOC24 has also been down over 24 hours now. I have been unable to contact anyone at the company since it happened.

Does anyone know what's going on?

Yes, there are still down at the moment .. And a quick search at WHT reveals that noc24 / north tx connect is actually the same people and fishy background .. Should have move earlier ..

I emailed them and got a reply in a matter of minutes my equipment is still online with them.

I got an email letting me know there would be a short downtime for bgp drop and additional carrier .

Also I know the previous owners of ntc and they are not the same as noc24.

Posted by DallasColo, 04-07-2012, 12:08 PM
Forgot to mention

The email replied to me stated they gave ample notice to dedicated server customers that were not current in billing that they were disconnecting them and was giving them an offer on the equipment if they choose to move no word on what the offer was .

Posted by Hinoserm, 04-07-2012, 04:33 PM
Still down, their website appears to still be inaccessible. Busy signal from their main phone #, full voice mail box from the only cell number I have on file.

We definitely were not late on any payments, nor have received any emails.

May i know what email address did u use to contact them?

I tried support@noc24.com and also created tickets in their support system but still no reply from them

I hate to be going off topic, but it seems all their customers are down except for a few. Their main support e-mail is noc@noc24.com. Supposedly they sent out an e-mail a week ago cancelling dedicated server and colocation customers for one of the following reasons:

1. Server hardware does not fit into their new business model. (say what?)
2. Your account was past due and it was disconnected.

I finally got a reply out of them saying they could deliver my hardware to another facility. When I replied back that I had someone local who could come pick it up immediately they went silent and I have not received a response since Saturday morning. It's very strange.

If I don't hear back by Monday I will probably have to go to the next level which will be a lawyer and most likely the Dallas Police Department. NorthTxConnect was great, but since it was bought out things have been very weird over there.

Split to outages.

ColoGuys >> NorthTXConnect >> Noc24 - It's been a sad demise from what was once a great provider (ColoGuys). Sad to see this situation where they are dropping dedicated + colo clients.

Good luck!

Ack!

So they're going into just connectivity? Or getting 'into the cloud'?

If Monday comes around and this is what you have to do I suggest you just drop by the data center yourself first and try to access your server. If you "have someone" and that's easier for you just tell them that "you" or "we will" pick it up, expect arrival.

Instead of telling them in such a manner that makes them feel like they have to make arraignments for some guy, or deal with local cops, or deal with a lawyer, all of those things will slow down what might be a simple process. It is colocation. Just have your staff/employee show up and take your server. If you can't get in then stand in front of the door or entry/whatever. Dont make it complicated or it will get complicated.

I wasn't going to demand they turn it over or "else". I was merely saying that if I can't get a hold of them or my server within the next few days I'll have to move to legal means to procure my equipment.

The problem here is NOC24 moved the equipment to yet another data center and I have no idea where it is located. I tried getting the information, but they won't turn it over. (Hence another reason why I'm moving)

Anyhow, I'll get it back hopefully Monday and this will all be a distant memory (I hope ).

Seems that way. Rather ridiculous of them to buy a company like NTC which was very much based around Colo + some dedicated.

There is a whole back story behind that deal that I might have to type up one of these days. Let's just say it was very messy and some people were left empty handed.

I would be interested in hearing this story. I started as a Cologuys customer and didn't even know about northtxconnect until I noticed their name on a card statement and started calling around to figure out what the charges were for -- it was explained to me they had taken over cologuys many months prior. Supposedly an email was sent, but I never got it.

These new guys (noc24) never explained exactly what happened either, even going so far as the skirt around the question whenever it has come up, and nobody has ever fessed up to the 13+ hour downtimes both times these companies changed "ownership".

The only two people I've ever been able to talk to since the switch from cologuys was a James Moore with northtxconnect and someone who I only know as "Dan" with NOC24. I do not know exactly what roles these two play/have played, but their cell #s are going to broken voice mail boxes. I am hoping this is simply because of the holiday.

Am I the only person who feels email is an unacceptable way to announce to your customers that you are about to unplug their running machines and transport them to a different facility?

-Michael

Posted by TradeViceroy, 04-08-2012, 06:30 PM
James Moore was with NTC and is no longer with the company. "Dan" is really Daniel R. If you search "NOC24" you will see there is quite a bit of history regarding him and NOC24.

Daniel is supposedly the sole owner of NOC24. Those two very long outages were from unannounced server moves. At one point the servers were at the Aeprio Networks data center, but I was told by a data center technician that someone came in overnight and moved everything out (corresponds with the gigantic downtime).

As for phone numbers they are all either disconnected or turned off. Dan told me he never uses the cell phone and their main number no longer works. You can only reach them via e-mail now.

This is rather worrisome for me as I'm a colocation customer yet I've received no email regarding this issue. I've tried contacting every number / email and alas no response. I contacted Aeprio networks though who have said they will pass the message on.

Oh and I wouldn't mind hearing about the back story.

Do you guys know how long the short bgp downtime will last? I have stuff on 1 colo server that I need either up or copied over if at all possible.

Does their support email still work? Their main site is down.

The support email doesn't work, no replies from them..

And I'm having problem with my remote backup, i really need my data back ..

Did you get your hardware back today? Dallas is a 6 hour drive one-way for me and I don't want to show up at an address that may not even exist.

-Michael

Posted by TradeViceroy, 04-09-2012, 08:01 PM
No, I did not get my hardware back today. Supposedly the tech was waiting at the address I gave them for a while. NOC24 claims the building was locked which in fact it wasn't. It's an office building that is open during business hours. I gave them my number to contact me in case of any issues and they ignored it.

I'm now getting the runaround and all sorts of other weird information. Part of the issue is that I owe a few months of colocation payments to them. Unfortunately I have had no way of paying them considering I don't have access to any control panel, they won't return phone calls, and every e-mail regarding billing has bounced.

I'm even willing to give them cash right now to settle any and all debts and they are declining. It's take 4-8 hours to get a response out of them. I'm afraid this is going to get escalated beyond e-mail. I don't have any other recourse.

Posted by aRxS, 04-09-2012, 10:08 PM
All of NOC24's IP is dead (199.58.248.0 - 199.58.255.255)

Only a few is still pinging -

199.58.249.1
199.58.249.2
199.58.250.1
199.58.250.10
199.58.250.129
199.58.250.130

Their e-mail I believe is being routed through Google's e-mail service. Only their MX record seems to be active on their DNS servers.

Posted by Hinoserm, 04-09-2012, 11:56 PM
I did finally get a hold of someone via noc@noc24.com. They are claiming I have a past due balance of $249. My monthly service is $64.95. I'm not sure where the number of $249 came from. Further, I've been tracking my payment records back as far as I can, and I can't see any missed payments. It's possible they missed something during the transfer from northtxconnect, as I had continued sending my payments there for a while (until the website was redirected). I will try to pull up the paper copies in the morning as I believe I had been printing and filing them.

They claim our equipment was sent to a collections/accounting firm in Kansas, but are not providing contact information for the company.

I spoke briefly with Dallas law enforcement who mentioned I should speak with my local law enforcement as well as a lawyer, and gave me some generic information and a place where I can get information. My understanding is that the machine is still my property until a specific type of paperwork has been filed and it should not have been transported without my knowledge. I haven't been able to verify that, however, as the person I was talking with didn't really understand what co-location was.

I have been able to gather a handful of phone numbers that may belong to Daniel and/or his past/current employees, although two that answered claimed (same guy) to be a wrong number. One of these was the number I had previously on file as Daniel's personal cell phone. One number had admitted to being a previous employee but having not worked there in about 3 weeks and was unable to provide any real information, although he did confirm the address of their offices. The rest of the numbers were disconnected, belonged to other companies or went to voicemail. I did not feel it was appropriate to leave messages until I was able to confirm these people were related to the company.

-Michael

They sent the equipment to a collections/accounting firm in Kansas? That doesn't even make any sense. Why on earth would they do something like that?

Hinoserm, I would like to PM you, but unfortunately you don't have the required number of posts which would enable that feature (posting in the Outage forum doesn't add anything to your count). Do you have an e-mail address by any chance?

Sorry to hear of everyone's Noc24 woes. I'm glad i got out when i did. I posted about my ordeal and how i removed my systems from them back in early January here: http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=1115828

108.59.40.32/27 Is the IP block i last used as a Noc24 customer. Checking ARIN still shows it owned by NTC, but shows the point of contact as Opsylon in Albuquerque NM. See: http://whois.arin.net/rest/net/NET-108-59-32-0-1/pft

Maybe someone could contact them to get more info.

Regarding billing. Two months after the Noc24 takeover of NTC i got a pastdue invoice from Noc24 for invoices previously paid to NTC. I opened a ticket and explained this and it was taken care of.

Regarding the physical location of this NOC, i can't help you there. But it was within 10 minutes of their physical office location if that helps anyone narrow it down.

At one point during an extended lack-of-communication period with Noc24 i looked up the address tied to their SSL certificate and it was a residential home in the Dallas area. Could be the home address of Dan the owner? I'm not suggesting anyone go bang on his door, or send the posse with torches and pitchforks.

Hopefully something i've posted with help you all out. Contact Thanh at Colounlimited when you're ready to work with some professionals again!

I was just told what is left out of the place. It was a boiler room operation, and there is doubt the servers were in the location they were suppose to be.

The best thing would be do detain the guy as he stole so much equipment.. Major fraud.

Posted by TradeViceroy, 04-10-2012, 05:27 PM
Well this is certainly turning into a huge issue. I can confirm that their office has been completely cleared out. It looks like they did it yesterday. Is anyone still getting e-mails from NOC24?

Posted by Hinoserm, 04-10-2012, 06:10 PM
Last reply was before noon. I sent an email around 12:30 and have not gotten a response as of 5pm.

Posted by abenson, 04-10-2012, 06:55 PM
This sounds like it's getting really bad. I would suggest calling the FBI at this point to report the incident. Even if they can't do anything at this point, having an official police report is always in your favor. I would also contact a lawyer to see your available options as it sounds like they won't be cooperating anytime soon.

Posted by teddi, 04-10-2012, 07:04 PM
After doing some digging I believe the boxes were / are still hosted at Aeprio Networks ( www (dot) aeprio (dot) com ). All my payments went to an email at that URL and I can confirm (after asking a couple of staff members) that Daniel does indeed work there (although his role seems ambiguous).

However both members of staff I talked to were "out of hours" staff which seemed odd to me as both time I've called it's been before 5pm. Both time I've contacted them (second time was far more helpful mind) they've said Daniel is currently marked as "unavailable" however they're both going to pass messages on, with the second person marking it as urgent.

I would recommend that you phone up and see if you can get any more information out of them yourselves.

www (dot) datacentermap.com/usa/texas/dallas/aeprio_tenants (dot) html also confirms that NOC24 are tennants.

Posted by Hinoserm, 04-10-2012, 07:19 PM
The phone number I'm getting for Aeprio is 1-214-310-4169, which is the same number as at least one payment on my credit card statement to NOC24. The NOC24 number on my statement changed within the last month, however.

The 4169 number is coming up as a disconnected Verizon number.

-Michael

Posted by Hinoserm, 04-10-2012, 07:23 PM
A few public records searches for Aeprio and NOC24 are not returning any results. I wonder if these people were actually paying the sales tax they were collecting from me to the state...

Maybe I will contact the comptroller in the morning.

The number I dialled is the one on their website (866-304-6930).

I've talked to probably at least a half dozen people today. Their office at the Empire building was completely cleaned out as of yesterday afternoon. Only one person I know of was able to get their equipment back and that was only after he camped out at NOC24's office building.

The FBI is aware of Daniel now and I've been told they are forwarding the information to their Fraud Division. Everyone who had equipment at NOC24 is encouraged to file a report with the FBI office in Dallas. Their number is 972-559-5000. It was hinted that the more people who call the more likely the FBI is to investigate the allegation.

It appeals Daniel is no longer answering e-mails. I'm assuming he has gone into hiding.

Posted by TradeViceroy, 04-10-2012, 08:19 PM
I also want to mention to everyone that Daniel is monitoring this thread. If you Google some of the names of the people who posted in this thread you will find a few interesting items out on the internet that trace back to him.

The issue here is that I don't have a problem paying whatever I owe. Produce an invoice, meet me at a public place like a Starbucks or something, we exchange money for the server, and we're done. We're talking a 1 minute transaction here. *shrugs*

I agree with this entirely. And if it is true my machine has been moved to a facility in Kansas, I would have no problem driving there to meet, pay and pick up. A 9 hour drive to Kansas is no different than a 6 hour drive to Dallas, to me.

According to some building permits, his phone number is: 214-450-1850. I do not know if this number is still active or not.

*EDIT*
Found some interesting history about this guy. Looks like he has had multiple court cases but 2 in the state of Florida regarding "Computer Crimes".

Apparently Daniel has been in contact with several NOC24 clients within the last few hours. Unfortunately he hasn't contacted me and isn't answering my text message or e-mails (although I just sent them about 30 minutes ago).

Supposedly the company was sold and all assets (mainly the IP blocks) were transferred to another company. The customer owned servers and equipment is in a storage unit.

From the sounds of it, it looks like once they filed a report with the FBI, he started contacting the customers. Maybe you should try to do the same? Call the FBI Dallas office (number is in this thread) and report the issue.

Several hundred and I highly doubt one-man op. The way I see it, the good guys from NTC got out early and either moved on or went to Aeprio and the guys I wouldn't trust with a nickel stuck around and ended up as Noc24. Not one-man, maybe four or five man.

There is quite a big difference between what you can demand when you do not own the equipment versus someone who is dealing with co-location. At most, I believe, is he required to have wiped the data using an approved method, and he may be required to give you a signed document stating that the data was wiped, IF you request it.

Unfortunately, at least from my past experience and after reading the NOC24 terms of service for dedicated server customers from a Google cache, I don't think they've done anything you can really dispute. They are not required to guarantee your data's safety unless you had some previous agreement that they were going to do so.

Please correct me if I am wrong. I am not a lawyer, but we do deal with customer data and I have had to go through these kinds of things with my own customers.

I'm not sure if this information is relevant any longer, but I did pop up to the 4th floor to snoop around before I called when I got to their location. It does seem to have been emptied, at least from what you can see without actually entering the locked area. I saw disassembled racks and power equipment but no actual machines.

However, when he called me back he was already over by the elevators with my server, so I believe he wheeled it down from the 4th floor (or some other part of the building), so I'm assuming the rest of the equipment is probably somewhere in that building. I was preoccupied by the deli on the 1st floor and didn't see exactly where he emerged from.

Well Daniel nicely shipped my server to the new datacentre, but apparently there were no rails with the machine and he swears that when he received the equipment there was nothing else with it (and because of how badly the NTXC -> NOC24 takeover occurred this doesn't surprise me). So it appears I'm having to order new rails!

I'm happy to hear that people are now receiving their servers. I'm still in a holding pattern as Daniel hasn't responded to me in two days. I would imagine he is very busy, but at least an acknowledgement would be nice.

I sent him the funds needed to cover the full balance (which is legally owed and I was never disputing it). USPS was supposed to deliver it to day, but now it looks like he'll get it tomorrow. If I could just receive an e-mail or something to arrange for pick-up tomorrow I would be thrilled.
