Namecheap DNS V2 under DDoS attack

Posted by treepunch, 03-11-2012, 02:54 PM
Figured I would post this here since I was trying to figure out why I couldn't connect to my servers earlier today and just came across this post on the Namecheap website.

Quote:
Dear Customers,

Unfortunately, currently our DNS system V2 is under a DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack, which caused temporary unavailability of most of the services. The target domains have been already detected and the attack was mitigated by our technical department. Unfortunately, you may experience intermittent issues with DNS system V2 for the next couple of hours.

We will continue to post regular updates about the status of our DNS V2 system. We apologize for the inconvenience this has caused.

Kind regards,

Namecheap Support Team

This is highly annoying and causing our customers and monitoring systems a great deal of confusion - one minute the DNS works, the next it times out.

Lets hope Namecheap resolve this and do something to prevent it from occurring again if the hackers have established a weakness in their system - to be fair, we've used it for 8 years and never ever had any issues - but its certainly a wake up call, think we need to look at using 2 DNS services for redundancy from now on.

Can imagine they will have probably hundreds of thousands, if not millions of domain names relying on their DNS - so this is quite a big issue for many.

Unfortunately, there are still delays in the work of our DNS system V2. Please accept our sincere apologies for the inconveniences. Thank you for your patience.

Update @ 21.11 GMT | 17.11 EST

The DDoS attack is continuing against our DNS. We have identified the source of the attack as coming from within China. We will shortly be blocking all traffic from China as we look to mitigate the attack. We still suggest you use DNS v1 at this moment in time.

Update @ 22.16 GMT | 18.16 EST

Performance of our DNS system is slowly improving. We still recommend you use DNS v1 at this time.

Update @ 23.37 GMT | 19.37 EST

The DDoS attack continues to hit our DNS system but DNS performance is generally stable and requests are fast. We are also bringing forward planned upgrades/enhancements to our network capacity and will have these completed by the end of today. Thank you for your patience.

Anyone notice the big increase in DDoS attacks lately?

Goodness, I'm really hating this DDoS sh*t. This is becoming a business for these hackers. Business jealousy is for sure one of the main reason why someone is experiencing this attack. Datacenters and the authority should take this matter on a serious and priority level.
