Hostxnow looks to be down.

Posted by illiterate, 12-03-2011, 06:46 PM
Hi all,

Just thought I would let you know, hostxnow, seems to be down as of about 22:40pm

Seems to be only affecting their main website, and email for me currently.

Their site seems to go to the default cpanel webpage.

Cant get to cpanel though which is a pain in the Arse...

I shall be making a quick backup just in case.

hostXnow.com is up
But their Client Area is down.
Quote:
SSL connection error
Unable to make a secure connection to the server. This may be a problem with the server, or it may be requiring a client authentication certificate that you don't have.
Error 107 (net::ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR): SSL protocol error.
I can confirm.

I can also confirm, that mail is now being bounced

<steve@illiteratereivews.com>: Host or domain name not found. Name service
error for name=illiteratereivews.com type=A: Host not found

Is it me misreading stuff cos I just took a look and it seems to be that his site is in Romania?

Posted by illiterate, 12-03-2011, 07:18 PM
Dont think so, hostxnow resolves to 109.75.161.150 which is a UK netblock, just outside skipton infact..

Also ignore my mail bouncing, i just cant spell my own domain name.... hangs head in shame

my site points to 213.175.212.244 which again seems to be a uk block, being advertised from the same DC

Yep, you wont belive how many times i had to spell check the damn thing before i bought the domain name.

Hostxnow's main site is back up, but my site seems to have been removed from the NS servers.

I really cant complain I dont pay for the hosting, as its through hostxfree....

This is the first outage i have had though. So not too bad.

Still out, as of 11:57am 4th of Dec

Had an email asking me to update my nameservers as they have moved me to another server.

I have updated my nameservers, but the new name servers dont have any records for my site.

Anyone else on hostxnow/free having issues or just me?

Site works for me... There main site that is..

Posted by illiterate, 12-04-2011, 08:39 AM
the main site has been back for a while, since around 2am.

My site has just come back to the land of the living, after they restored my A records to DNS.

So im back to having a working site...

So as far as i can see this is the timeline.

1:05am ish main hostxnow.com site goes down
1:13am illiteratereviews.com goes down according to my pingdom
2:25am main hostxnow.com site comes back
9:25am i get an email asking me to change nameservers
10:00am i change name servers and query them for my site ip. DNS says nope not here
11:56am i email asking them to check my A records
12:18pm site comes back up

I must point out that I use the free hosting so im not complaining about the service, its free for pete's sake

There's nothing to worry about Steve.

This is the first time something like this has happened since we started in December 2009 (just over 2 years ago). And this affected free hosting accounts only. All paid hosting accounts were fine. So we've done well.

I'll be honest here and explain exactly what happened.

I had two dedicated servers, one that was being used to host paid hosting accounts, and another that was being used to offer free hosting accounts.

The HostXFree.com website was hosted on the server used to host paid hosting accounts (so you could have accessed that site). Your free hosting account was hosted on the same server used to host the HostXNow.com website.

I decided to stop offering small free hosting accounts and move all of my own personal sites onto my own VPS for ease of management, save costs, etc. So all my personal sites + HostXNow.com website is now hosted on my own VPS. All of the free hosting accounts (not many mind you <50) were moved onto the server that is used to offer paid hosting accounts.

So I've closed HostXFree.com and won't be offering free hosting accounts anymore. It was just a temporary thing to help spread the word a bit more which worked. It isn't worth offering free hosting long term, IMO. You'll know what I mean by this should you start offering the same.

Anyway, so I'll be offering paid hosting accounts only now.

As for Xtremo pointing out that the IP for HostXNow.com was pointing to Romania, he was correct. I now host the site offsite on my own VPS with IntoVPS in their UK location. See below for the reason why the IP was showing Romania location instead of United Kingdom.

From IntoVPS

=====
The geolocation is not updated. I know geolocation services wrongly show that the IP is in Romania. But that is not correct. The geolocation databases will update as well, but it will take 2-3 weeks.

The IP is on our servers in the Virtus data center from Enfield, UK (12 miles North of London).

We did update it at RIPE data base, but our services like MaxMind etc. need to update their database and that takes some time.

Here's the updated info at RIPE: https://apps.db.ripe.net/search/quer...#resultsAnchor

=====

PS this isn't the last of it though, I wanted to use LiteSpeed and CloudLinux together and be able to use the memory limits in CloudLinux, but CloudLinux 5 doesn't support it, so I've just setup a new server (also using slightly better CPU E31230 instead of X3430) with CentOS6 so I can use LiteSpeed and CloudLinux together and be able to use the memory limits. I needed to upgrade the servers CPU anyway.

So I'll need to migrate all cPanel accounts from the old server to the new server. That should be much easier to do though, and so no one should notice any downtime as it should just be a case of migrating the IPs from the old server to the new server. But as you know, things don't always go to plan. Hopefully everything goes ok though. I have offsite backups just incase.

I hope that clears everything up.

All the best,
Chris

Hey Chris,

No chance, im already a network engineer (helping) looking after 12 DC's over 7 countries, i dont need any more stress in my life. I know what a pain I have been, and i like to think im somewhat technical

Sorry if the post came across as being a whine, I was just intersted to see if it was me or everyone.
Thanks for taking the time to explain the issues, and for the record, I have found your support, and responce to be excellent.
