XLhost down?

Posted by theglobal, 08-25-2011, 01:48 AM
Does anyone know what is happening with XLhost?

They seem to be completely off the net including their own web site since about 1-2 hours ago. I have had a dedicated with them for a few years and never had a problem like this: they have been rock solid.

The only clue is that they sent a Twitter message 10 hours ago announcing that they now have a DDoS protection from Arbor Networks.

Yes, they seems to be down, maybe their new DDoS protection is acting over-protective right now!

Yeah, they are down...

I called them (from Australia) as we have 3 servers with them.

No help out of office hours...

First problem in 3 years of using them, but it has affected a lot of services we run.

I really hope they prove their worth, otherwise, I might have to move some/all to a host that has better out of hours support.

Note: I actually thought exactly the same thing about the DDOS protection system.

I am starting to think that their voicemail system which says "leave a message and we will automatically page the technician, who will return your call" is not so much true as it is complete bulls**t.

Anyone had any luck speaking with someone?

Down for me also. When I call it is just busy now. Really Sucks.

Posted by Ariko, 08-25-2011, 03:23 AM
same to me - down for more than 3h.
can't connect with support .....

As angry as I am now, this is the first problem in 3 years.

The biggest thing for us is it is exactly what makes or breaks them as an ongoing option for us.

We were about to get 3 more servers, but now, I am thinking that I might hedge our bets and put them elsewhere.

Posted by Com Connect, 08-25-2011, 03:30 AM
Who wants to put bets on the DDoS system being the cause?

Posted by iranihost, 08-25-2011, 03:36 AM
we have more than 15 server there !

all of them is down !

i think its for Power Problem !

Posted by tudisco, 08-25-2011, 03:37 AM
We rarely have had problems with xlhost, mostly we have been happy. When we have, it has almost always been in the middle of the night. Sometime we don't hear from them till morning. They really need step up and provide 24 hour support. The technician they are paging seems to disappear sometimes.

Posted by Com Connect, 08-25-2011, 03:37 AM
Whatever it is - it has taken out everything. Even their site xlhost.com is down.

Before my server went down. network very slow. could not access anything on the internet. So it could be the new DDoS system. I am thinking that is probably it.

If this is your first problem in 3 years, better wait a bit more and give them a chance to explain.

copy from a tweet of some guy:
"@xlhost is down. i call the CEO of #xlhost and talk to him, he told me it will be live in 15-20min"

lets hope and pray ....

now is UP !

My server is alive again. still seems to have network issues. Anybody else back?

Posted by Com Connect, 08-25-2011, 03:56 AM
You must be the only one.

Posted by Com Connect, 08-25-2011, 03:59 AM
Still no good here (Australia) - both the servers and the main site (xlhost.com)

Posted by iranihost, 08-25-2011, 04:00 AM
my server's back online !

but network speed is very low.

Posted by Ariko, 08-25-2011, 04:01 AM
mine too - speed seems ok from my side

Posted by Com Connect, 08-25-2011, 04:02 AM
Seems pretty likely that it was the DDoS system. They are probably working through getting the networks cleared one block at a time.

They should really update their Twitter with progress.

Posted by Com Connect, 08-25-2011, 04:06 AM
xlhost.com is back for us, not our servers though.

Posted by Com Connect, 08-25-2011, 04:13 AM
We seem to have our servers back online, speed is very hit and miss though...

Posted by theglobal, 08-25-2011, 04:18 AM
My server is back up. The machine had turned off, thus a power failure looks more likely than a failure with the DDoS system or other things in the network.

The exact downtime for my server (in UTC) was as follows:

Code:
crash 2011-08-25 04:18:32 -> up 2011-08-25 08:06:47 =    03:48:15 (13695 s)
...as measured by downtimed.

This was the first time in 4 years.

Looks like it was a power outage after all.

From http://twitter.com/#!/XLHost:

Quote:
Issue with transfer switch caused CMH-1 to lose power. Power has been restored. Please send open issues to XLHostsupport@thenap.com
Quote:
We have restored the support center at http://support.xlhost.com/. We continue to work to restore services.
Quote:
Update -- it was determined that the power outage effected roughly 10% of our customers. We are working to restore everything.
