enotch is currently down and they are really going down super fast, faster than a rocket. Earlier enotch was a quality service, don't know what happened for the past some months, it going worse by the day. Just hope they regroup and sort their probs out. |

Today, Cogent suspended us because some of the ip spaces that we utilize from them have IPs that is listed in various spam databases. We were slated to exit the 33 Whitehall datacenter 8/5/11 and due to a paperwork mishap the extension was not processed and now Cogent is asking for a significant dollar amount to restore service.
We are working to comply with their demands but realistically this could take another 24-48hrs to get resolved and restore service. The minimal services that we have with Telehouse/HE are not affected.
This certainly adds a new wrinkle to a list of issues that our user base has experienced with us and we cannot appropriately express the impact that we feel on behalf of our customers.
We will provide updates as they become available. |

This is very unfortunate.
Thank you for taking the time to provide an update.

I've got both a VPS, and colo equipment. Are you planning on moving the colo customers out of 33 Whitehall? If so, how much warning are you going to give the colo customers? |

Something about Enotch's story doesn't make sense... if they were truly shut down due to spam complaints (which still looks bad being that I'm sure they got plenty of notice prior to the shut down, so if this were the case, they simply neglected the complaints), why would Cogent require a 'significant dollar amount' to restore service? You'd think they'd be more interested in them resolving the complaints. I've never heard of this EVER from Cogent. Sounds like they just didn't pay the bill. But either excuse still looks pretty bad.
At any rate, I hope that all involved are able to retrieve their data or at least have backups if the data was critical enough. |
Posted by hoster1221, 08-10-2011, 10:29 AM |
exactly - it doesn't add up. Either way it's a bad reflection on the company to get to the point of service disruption because of "paper work". I guess it boils down to you get what you pay for |

We were suspended recently for an Abuse compliant by Cogent for 4hrs, same procedure. How long have you been using Cogent?
The issue here is two fold, one being the abuse compliants that were received which were addressed within 24hrs in this case and the second being the fact that we requested service cancellation that was processed ahead of schedule and we were assed an early termination fee which we disputed. There were also issues with a cross connect order which was not delivered as ordered and not billed as per the signed service order. So there are many factors at play here. In any case we never had this issue with Cogent before and we are working out. I am waiting for the wire to be received and service restored. Service will be restored. I hope to have an update later today on ETA. |

Well in any case, I hope everything gets sorted for you.
I have no direct relationship with Cogent, however majority of our traffic gets routed over Cogent. We too have many abuse complaints that come in on a daily basis, but we are quick to get them addressed and have never been threatened to be shut down or temporarily suspended. |

I hope I'm wrong, but this looks to me like the nail in the coffin for Enotch. No information what so ever about the downtime. E-mails bouncing, telephone not working, servers down for over 5 days now.
I'm glad i have two VPS's with different providers sharing the same data. Hope everyone that did not have any backups will get their data back. |

I think the majority of customer are now just hoping for a little up time to get their files off the servers. I surely hope no one is really considering using these guys services- what a joke - things happen all the time in the technology world. It's how you deal with that matters. They have ABSOLUTELY no regards to their clients. They post random posts on a hosting site and that is considered communication - what a joke? emails bouncing, phone is down (now up but you get disconnected after a few minutes of hold), websites are down. What type of a company would have this kind of disrespect to its customer base? It has been more than a week? Can't set a DNS redirect to enotch.com and provides feedback on a temp site? What a joke! |

I don't think you guys realize how not so easy it would be to get a 'temporary connection'.
1. They don't own their IP's therefore they'd have to reassign all VPS's new IPs.
2. You'd have to find a provider willing to give you the IP's and bandwidth for just a short period of time. Most likely this won't happen unless you have a relationship with someone who has the power to do so.
3. Cross connects (assuming they are in a carrier neutral facility) would have to be ran, and some data centers will require a commitment just for that.
Just saying the thought of a temporary connection from someone else is probably not feasible and not realistic in most cases. And Cogent surely won't turn them back on until they are paid up or arrangements are made. |

I've never heard of seen cogent charging people to turn up a service, they simply blackhole the ips.
However.. billing issues are a different story. |

Anybody can take legal action - the question is, will you gain anything? And the global answer to that is no. Most if not all hosts have clauses that protect them in the event of data loss.
Honestly, if you're talking about 'legal action', then apparently it was important enough data to have your own backups. Quick frankly, this is your mistake. |

As Ken has said, its your own fault. I totally agree with him, if that data was so important, you should've had offsite backups. |

It may be wrong how they went, but the people that didn't make backups are also at fault, Remember, even in situations NOT like this one, where boxes crash, and have to be restored, It may not be the hosting company's fault. Hopefully we learned a valuable lesson here (:. |

Correct, which is why I hate companies that compete, price wise, because usually the support lacks, and the liability grows larger on the clients end. there's several companies that try and outsource other companies, but what I've found, is that the more expensive companies provide better support, are more friendly, and have more experience in the field they're working in, Wouldn't you want to pay a BIT more for that to have top of the line support, and trustworthy staff that are actually nice, rather than having a hosting company that ends like this ,without word, or anything of the sort? that usually gets to me. |

Posted by SWATServers-Brant, 08-15-2011, 12:38 AM |
Company wise? I've heard KickAssVPS , but that's just from my sources. If you can afford it though, I'd go with a Dedicated Server, especially if you're at risk of being DDoS'd, Most VPS's do not come with DDoS Protection, while Dedicated Servers do, so keep that in mind while you're searching(: Also, make sure the host is a reliable company, not one that may fall within a month, forcing you to be in this kind of situation again. Nor is more expensive. it's a 50/50 chance you're going to get screwed either way. Some of the best VPS support I've seen was sub $10 range, and, some of the worst was. Research, research, research. THAT is the key. How long has the company been in business, how long have they been on WHT, how much of a contribution have they made to the community, how many posts do they have. There's a number of factors here. |
Posted by SWATServers-Brant, 08-15-2011, 12:51 AM |
Adding on to what Linux Tech said, I'd recommend searching Client reviews, How the company reacts to certain situations, if the company has a reputation of downtime, or of client neglect, it might not be the company to go with. |

Huh? Where on earth do you get that idea from? If that were true (which it's not) then most VPSs would also be covered because they're on the dedicated servers you reckon are "mostly" covered. |

Correct
MOST VPS' are located on a major dedicated provider's network. While they may not directly advertise 'DDOS protection' (hardware), it's in there somewhere. Any major provider without it at this point is just ridiculous |

All Services have been restored.
Some has commented on why we did not bring up a temporary site and i can see how this may have been helpful however those same individuals were here posting in the same threads where we provided updates. We did not have any more information other than what we provided which we in-turn received from Cogent. It realistically took Cogent 4 days to remove the Null route for our IP blocks as this was to be done COB thursday of last week. |

Many reported being unable to reach the 800# is general and some have reported your experience with others having no issues at all. We are looking into the root cause of this issue. We do leverage another provider for weekend phone support coverage as those hours are very minimal in call volume. |

No sooner did 3 of my Enotch VPS's come back up last week, than one of them went down again.
It's been down for nearly a week, no response from Enotch other than the usual "we're investigating" yada yada.
I guess a bit of bad luck, but a message for the Enotch guys watching, a little more feedback from you rather than ignoring tickets would go a long way to keeping customers happy. |

Let's just face it, Enotch's customer support is complete crap. My VPS went down about a week after it came back up after the week long outage, and now it's been down for 10 days. That means that I've had about 45% uptime in the past month. I submitted a support ticket over a week ago and haven't gotten a response. I even called them twice. Both times they said I should have an update on my ticket within a few hours. That was 5 days ago, and I still haven't gotten a response. Now I've got people complaining to me that the VPS down and that I need to take better care of my website.
If anybody from Enotch is reading this, stop ignoring your paying customers!! It should not take over 10 days to get a response to a support ticket. Your customers deserve to know why the services that they paid for are not working. Even a short explanation of why it's down would be good. |

You should have backed up your data and moved it. |

I'm about to get to that point. The reason I haven't yet is because I paid for the entire year in advance, and I don't exactly have tons of spare cash to throw around. That and the fact that there was about 60-70 GB of data that was on the VPS, and on my internet connection, that would take a while to reupload. |

Can you PM a ticket number? We have been working to provide updates to all open tickets. We have engaged a new support vendor to ease the pain and you should start to see improvements in this area now. |

We will issue credits for the downtime experienced over the next few days and are working to address all customer inquiries.

Enoth, could you please make it clear... Is this just a new trick or truth? |

Is what a trick? We have been giving customers a credit for the downtime. There has been confusion in regards to how to confirm that the credit has been given, we have been simply cancelling any generated invoice and manually advancing the next due date 2 months or to the agreed upon credit time.
You can verify that the credit has been given by looking at the product details section in the clientarea. If you are a monthly customer and your next due date is in October or November you have obviously been credited. |

Ok. Thanks. I will check. My 'due' time has not come yet. |

I've received two months of credit, as stated by Enotch Networks. |
Posted by temperer, 09-10-2011, 12:52 PM |
I'd definetely paid for the previous beacause I received a bill.
And this month I am expecting a bill on 19th-23th. So I'll check and come back with feedback .. |

I never received any credits either, and never had replies to my tickets in weeks.
For the past few days I've been working on the presumption they're dead, or going that way. They must have lost a ton of customers with the original outage, plus a ton more with this latest one. Few people who run a VPS can manage weeks of downtime, so my guess that the reason I don't receive any replies is that there's nobody left there to reply to them.
And I don't need to PM any ticket numbers, as it's very easy for them to go into their WHMCS and see all their tickets with status of "Open" or "Customer Reply". They don't need to ask for ticket numbers, they should just reply to all the tickets that are Awaiting Reply.
So like I suspect anyone else who has their data has done, I've migrated.
Text book lesson on how to not run a Hosting Company I'm afraid :-( |

If you are on enotch, you should run for the hills! I never received responses to my many support tickets, so I called paypal and disputed all of the charges. I even paid for a VPS and hosting that was never set up! Anyway, paypal refunded my money and I haven't looked back.
Very poor VPS hosting. |

As I had promised I checked my invoices.
I haven't received any compensation since the last disastrous fall. Your billing is just generating invoices regulary.
So please delete my current invoice and the one which will be generated in the next month.
I have submitted a ticket as well. |

People have been saying 'stay away' for years now. It isn't the first time they've disappeared, they've done it at least 2 - 3 times now.

if you have backups move to another provider and don't loos your time waiting for them |

Its a shame to see this. I'm actually good friends with Ervin and this isn't what I expect out of him. I didn't think he could let this happen. |

Seriously, go back 2 - 3 years in here and you'll see some huge threads about their outages and them lasting fairly long periods.
