Sittingbourne Data Centre Air Conditioning Failure - 27/06/2011

Posted by Ixape, 06-28-2011, 01:31 PM
Dear xxxxxx, This afternoon at around 3pm there was a failure in the air conditioning units at our Sittingbourne data centre.when the first unit failed the tertiary unit which is reserved for failures kicked in however this subsequently failed along with the second unit. This then led to temperatures gradually rising to 43 degrees. While this was not overly high it led to around 5% of servers over heating and turning off to protect them. At the time this happened we checked all devices and tried to re-route airflow using portable air conditioning units until the main units were restored. At the moment the full extent of the failures is not completely known however it is understood that the heat transfer units were unable to cool the glycol fluid from the units due to the outside temperature reducing their efficiency. Once these were manually cooled with water the units then began to work restoring all the air conditioning units. A Denco engineer was also on site during this time and is continuing work this evening to change the glycol fluid to water as a temporary measure which will increase cooling efficiency by about 30%. Once this is done the data centre will then be working with Denco to work out why the units were not able to withstand the heat as they are over specced for the size of the facility and have worked through outside temperatures up to 38 degrees in previous years. As a temporary measure there are also a number of high power portable air conditioning units enroute to the data centre should they be needed. We appologise for not sending any notices sooner however we have been working hard with the Denco engineer and the on site data centre staff to restore the 5% of services that were unavailable. We are also now awaiting a full report from Denco on the failure and what needs to change to prevent the same event from happening again in the future. If you have any services that are still inaccessible please create a ticket by e-mailing xxxxxxxx or by logging in to the client portal at xxxxxxxx. Best Regards, VooServers Support.

Anyone experience any troubles?
