Hello
Did anyone else experience a downtime with Knownhost
I received a message from Pingdom
PingdomAlert DOWN:
SIte (www.site.com) is down since 01/06/2011 03:03:12AM.
PingdomAlert UP:
SIte (www.site.com) is UP again at 01/06/2011 03:12:12AM, after 9m of downtime.
Total of 9 mins of downtime.
This is the 3rd downtime during the past couple of months.
Was KH hit with a DDos again |

9 minutes? You are seriously going to complain about 9 minutes of downtime? |

Well, why not if this is recurring and goes unexplained? |

It does not go "unexplained". As far as i noticed any network issues are posted on their forums at once. Probably if he opened a support ticket he would have got an explanation too. |

You can subscribe to the Forum where they post N/W problems. As far as i know the forums never go down. So if a new topic is opened in that forum, with any problem related to your DC you will get an email immediately notifying you of the new topic. That is what I have done and if any issue does arise I can know for certain if its secluded to me or the whole DC. |

9 minutes to deal with a DDoS attack?
I'd say that's a pretty well handled situation, plus constant updates on their forum in real time.
These DDoS attacks are coming from everywhere now....nobody is immune to them.
So to only suffer 9 minutes of disruption is pretty impressive given the current volatile situation. |
Posted by BeZazz, 06-01-2011, 06:15 AM |
I must say unless there is more to this 9 minutes is not worth creating a thread for IMO. |

There is a bit of history here guys.
Farrukh is a customer of KH, and for reasons best known to himself, sees fit to generate negativity towards them whenever possible.
As I recall, the last episode of this saga was the support staff weren't suitably jolly or entertaining enough for his liking.
Now most people who weren't happy with a provider would look elsewhere....there's plenty to choose from.
However I suspect Farrukh is having difficulty to find a suitable replacement for KnownHost....which is quite understandable.
So the poor guy is caught in this vortex of not liking KnownHost, yet is stuck with them.
I'm stuck with KnownHost too....so are literally hundreds of others here. But we're all quite happy in our vortex. |

XTremo, can you please help me understand your term of "STUCK"? I'm having a little of a hard time trying to grasp the term when you put it that way. How could someone be "stuck"? |

Stuck means you can't move. If I wanted to move from KH.....where could I go? There aren't many options out there at that level. |

I praise other good providers as well....KH are no exception in that respect.
If something has gone wrong.....take it up with the provider.
If all else fails then post a negative review by all means....but nine minutes downtime for a DDoS irrespective of the company involved is hardly worthy of a debate on here.
I had the 9 minutes of downtime as well....and you know what? Nobody died.....and in a hundred years nobody's going to give a toss anyway. |

OMG! 9 entire minutes! It must be a very traumatic. Do you require therapy? Give me a break! |

Seriously come on...
If your appilcation is that important to you, Maybe its time you got some kind of fail-over in place? |

Really? are you going to rant and rave about 9 minutes of shared hosting downtime? |
Posted by ModelWebHost, 06-01-2011, 10:42 AM |
9 minutes of downtime is not very bad but if it continues to occur then it may be problematic. Knownhost is the most popular at WHT and wait for the reply from them. |
Posted by jaypeesmith, 06-01-2011, 10:51 AM |
9 minutes? I recently had an issue with my host completely disappearing from the internet. Before that, I had a situation where my VPS was offline for over 24 hours. 9 minutes in a month? If I'm not mistaken, isn't that like 99.98% uptime? |
Posted by KnownHost, 06-01-2011, 12:22 PM |
Here is our response.. We're human. A true test of a host is when issues arise and we "always" react as fast as humanly possible. Do you think we like having our website down and support tickets about this? Of course not, but issues happen to the best of us. Yes, BMW's break down sometimes but the service they provide compared to say a KIA can't be compared. There is nothing else to say really as we handled this and the other recent (very rare in 5+ years) pretty much the best you can to be blunt. Sorry for any inconveniences. As you can see here, our uptime is still exceptional with any recent issue, http://www.hyperspin.com/en/ranking....i=10&d=90&s=10 |

You guys deserve a pat in the back for the excellent services you provide, seriously I been with many hosts and i do not even think of moving since i moved to KH. I get the monthly invoice .. I pay and be done with it I did have something like 30 mins downtime last month but compared to the uptime and support i got i just shrugged it off, plus you guys bought it back real fast and were very open about what went wrong.
I won't be moving till i get kicked off your network or something like that
But it would be nice if you guys were more active on sites like twitter etc maybe just tweet the post you make on your forum when any outage occurs. I believe you use vbulletin as your forum, you can easily add a tweet button to your topics as we see on WHT too and your post would be automatically posted on twitter too. |

Thanks, we all appreciate it. We tend to look at the glass 1/2 full not 1/2 empty like others who soley focus on negativity but it is what it is. We have thousands and thousands of customers and as you know making them all happy simply isn't possible. If it was, we're all for it!
Twitter - yeah it's not used much as we don't have the right person to focus on that quite yet. We're working towards that but we have a few interesting things going on so in time we will. Hope this is okay. |

We're seeing routing problems that affect part of our network and we're working on this. It's not network wide. It's being worked on as we speak. It's not a DDOS or anything like that... |

It's packet loss and effecting a very small percentage of our customers. It's being investigated. |
Posted by Brian O, 06-02-2011, 11:20 AM |
Network issues happen with every host it is however nice to see KnownHost is here updating their customers without leaving them in the dark. The way I look at it is: like it or not, issues are going to happen with every hosting company it is how often they keep you updated, how fast they resolve it that determine if they are a legit host or not.
All the best and good luck.

Posted by KnownHost, 06-02-2011, 11:23 AM |
There was a routing loop which affected about 20% of our IP space in Texas only. Routes were flushed and re-configured to resolve this. This created some packet loss for 5-15 minutes as some lasted slightly longer. |

You have been updated. I PM'ed you a little while go. One of your IP's works fine and the other is one of the few not working yet. We're working with the Datacenter to find the cause. We're not just sitting hoping it fixes itself. Our entire team is working on it.. |

About an hour ago I started to see some failures from my http monitoring, which doesn't usually happen. Everything looks good on the server, but I'll check CSF as suggested, as that likely (at least) explains the weird just-ping.com performance.
Thanks! |

I was thinking the same.
I can name many providers I have used over the years, many much larger, with downtimes longer than that.

Any suggestion then about the duration and number of outages after which a customer is entitled to worry about things? |

That is a personal decision. If being down once has you pinching a loaf, look for another provider as they all promise 99.99999% uptime.
I have providers, even now, for my servers (for my personal boxes), that go down or something happens once in a blue moon. I do not run to WHT to post about it, or jump ship because of it. However, if it was happening at some crazy intervals for no reason like 12 times a day, or was going on for 2-4 weeks, and the site started being down more than up, then yes... I would be on the prowl for a new host A.S.A.P.. |

I'm not sure why you keep saying this thread is pointless because of a 9min downtime
i havnt been able to do anything with my vps for 4 days, it was offline for over 11 hours yesterday before they fixed it, it went down again about 40 mins ago so i came here to see what was being said. |

If you were down that long it's not the result of the routing loop issue. We didn't have 11 hours of downtime ever since the inception of this business. That could be memory related to your VPS or something similar not related to this. |

Customer supports seems to be quite fast & reliable. |

There is nothing wrong with the servers. An IP routing loop isn't server related. In fact yesterday the servers were online just some IP's were in a loop. It was under 20% of our Texas IP's so an isolated number too. |
