Egypt - Citynethost

Posted by F-DNS, 04-08-2011, 06:23 AM
Our services at Citynethost in Cairo went down a little over 3 hours ago. Their web site is also unreachable.

http://www.downforeveryoneorjustme.com/citynethost.com

I'm not sure if this is specific to them, or if the government has decided to cut the Internet ahead of Friday prayers again.

Has anyone any info please?

EDIT: Looks like their IPs aren't being announced again, so it's possibly political rather than technical

Posted by freethought, 04-08-2011, 07:19 AM
I can't see any IP blocks being announced from CityNetHost's AS33785 in any of our BGP feeds, but there are plenty of announcements out of other Egyption ISPs, including AS24863 (LINKdotNET) who seem to be the single upstream transit provider for CityNetHost.

Looks like the BGP withdrawls happened about 07:40 UTC.

Thanks for that. Still not sure if it's political, or someone forgot to put a quid in the meter

They're back up

Posted by freethought, 04-08-2011, 08:13 AM
Glad to hear you're back up and running lets hope that it stays that way!

It looks like the BGP re-announcements started about 11:50 UTC.

I cut them a lot of slack at the moment following all the unrest and government interventions in Internet, mobile networks etc. They provide great service when they're up, so I hope no-one reads too much into this thread... I'm certainly not blaming them for this outage until I hear different

Yep! I can reach them from the UK, Germany and various USA points. Where are you located? The BGP announcements may not have reached your part of the world yet.

Im from Holland and it appears down for me

They've gone again for me too. Same result as you, traces from European and USA points all stop at Paris. Grrrrr

Posted by freethought, 04-08-2011, 08:42 AM
From the brief investigation work I've done today, CityNetHost has a single upstream transit provider - LINKdotNET, who in turn have two upstream transit providers - Level3 and GlobalCrossing. You appear to be getting to the point where Level3 hand off to LINKdotNET in Paris, but then it appears that you are not making any progress on LINKdotNET's network.

The BGP re-announcements have reached you, hence why you can traceroute to the IP address without dying inside your own ISP's core network.

If you want to PM me the IP address that you are tracing to, I can compare your results to my own from our network in the UK and see what you should be expecting to see after hop 15.

Ultimately though, you are going to need to open a ticket with CityNetHost so that they can work with LINKdotNET to troubleshoot the underlying problem for you.

I just got to them via GBLX

Try 196.46.189.254 (host-196.46.189.254.citynet.com.eg)

Posted by freethought, 04-08-2011, 08:52 AM
I can currently see announcements for 41.215.240.0/22, 41.223.52.0/22 and 196.46.188.0/22 coming out of AS33785 and can ping/traceroute to 196.46.189.254 from our network in the UK, which then goes via GlobalCrossing.

Yay its back up !

Thanks - Time for a late lunch, me'thinks, while they get their act together

Posted by FayaMan, 04-11-2011, 11:39 AM
damn down again

Posted by freethought, 04-11-2011, 11:59 AM
Yup, looks to be the same problem again - lots of BGP withdrawals about 15:12 UTC eventually leaving AS33785 completely isolated

Posted by F-DNS, 04-11-2011, 12:06 PM
We lost them about 50 minutes ago but they're back now. Lots of latency and packet loss at first but looking more normal now.

Posted by freethought, 04-11-2011, 12:15 PM
Yeah, 15:12 UTC was about an hour ago, so that fits time wise. Looks like BGP re-announcements happened at about 15:48 UTC

Posted by freethought, 04-11-2011, 12:19 PM
Looks to have gone again - not seeing any route announcements from AS33785 here!

Edit: and it's back again!

Only CityNetHost will be able to tell you the exact reason for the problems that they have been experiencing, but they are single homed onto LINKdotNET, which means that they rely on a single internet service provider and thus there is an easily identifiable single point of failure.

VPS down since 4/11/2011 3:11:04 PM UTC (19 hours and counting)

Unfortunately the VPS from this provider are not dependable.
