2HourServers Down

Posted by computerwis, 04-04-2011, 04:35 AM
Hi WHT Members:

I currently have a vps with them and it is there website is down and even the vps. It seems like the transition to a new owner wasn't that good.

Quote:
2Hour XEN (173.252.249.115)
DOWN at Apr 04 2011 09:01 AM (GMT +8:00)
Err: ping: request timeout
I will try and contact them to see if they will reply. If you have this problem too, please post here aswell.

Thank You.

I also cannot access their site.

For now, only personal MSN or offsite contact will work cause their mail server might also be down.

Posted by jaypeesmith, 04-04-2011, 07:13 AM
I'm with them, too. It started about 8-8:30pm Eastern, last night. I suspect it's related to an email I received Saturday night:

-----

Hello

This email is to inform you that starting tomorrow at 8 pm and finishing on Wednesday we will start moving vps servers to a new data center. You will be assigned new ip addresses. Please backup your data off site before your vps is moved. We will no responsible for data loss during this move. This will not affect dedicated servers only vps.

Thanks

Jason

-----

When I saw this, I didn't get a good feeling and emailed support. I was told that my server was scheduled to move on Tuesday. But, sure enough, I am down.

I'm guessing that the move is not going smoothly. I pray that people have good backups.

As you alluded to, computerwis, the change in ownership is causing me concerns. If this is tied to the datacenter move, this was both poorly-coordinated with customers and, at least from how it appears now, poorly-executed.

Fortunately,

I just started with them. I would be more upset if I had customers on my server.

Posted by shell-box, 04-04-2011, 09:03 AM
Yeah I hear you there. Our customers get mad if anything changes. I could imagine what would happen if I sent an email out like that... Good luck!

Just found this thread thanks to Jaypeesmith.

I too am experiencing downtime issues with 2HourServers, since around 8:30PM EDT Sunday. It would have been nice if in their email they would have stated the timezone as well as the projected downtime.

However, I am not entirely surprised at this FUBAR. Over the past month that we have had service with them, every night around 2AM Pacific, our server would have high packet loss, without fail, for 30 - 60 minutes. Further more, we have had other instances of high packet loss outside of this daily window. When asking support what the issue was, their answer was always "We didnt see anything on our end" However, when looking at the statistics, there is a huge dip in bandwidth usage during the reported downtime. Of course this move to a new Data Center means that something was going awry with their former Data Center, which leads me to think that they knew that something was wrong but didnt admit to it.

Also, I do not see why they would take the current servers offline, until the new servers were fully operational. That just boggles my mind as to how unprofessionally this was handled. I feel that proper compensation must be given, to correct this. I surely hope no one is losing too much money over this, as I can surely see someone taking legal action against 2HourServers.

Posted by matheweis, 04-04-2011, 04:23 PM
I got the same e-mail. I hope people noticed this line: "We will no responsible for data loss during this move.", and also that they had enough time do back their data up! My sites have been offline since yesterday.

I also e-mailed support as soon as I saw this - and I didn't even get a response! Extremely unprofessional for any serious hoster.

Fortunately for me I was at the end of my monthly billing cycle, and my e-mail is hosted elsewhere, so I haven't lost anything. Thinking of moving to Joe's.

The sad part is that I get better communication on my $5.95/month BuyVM account. They actually apologized for the short notice on dealing with a maintenance issue.

You would think that they would do something as simple as having a Twitter account to keep customers updated on the progress. Every hour that goes by has me considering alternatives.

Posted by KingITS, 04-04-2011, 04:40 PM
Exact same issue here. Of course I had already submitted my payment for the month before this happened. I don't have anything critical (thankfully) with them, but it's still a PITA to change IP's and totally disappear for a few days.

Interesting, one of my friends suggested something I never thought about. He was wondering if 2HourServers had actually taken their boxes out of the colo and shipped them to the new Data Center. That is, if they actually own the boxes they host out of.

Posted by Chaos Inc, 04-04-2011, 05:06 PM
Please someone tell me what to do.... I was out on vacation and came back and saw this just now. I have no data and their site is down. They did set me up a remote backup system at IP 173.252.248.71 but that is not responding either.

Please help me out guys.... This site is my only source of income and I am having a mental breakdown right now! PLS HELP.

Who knows? In his introductory email, Jason stated that they were (at some future date) moving to a new data center with upgraded hardware. Also, I got the impression that this wasn't going to be a wholesale shutdown and move but, hey, what do I know?

NLK, I'm with you -- I can't imagine any company interested in making money doing this. They advertise on here so, why someone wouldn't come on here to share an update is beyond me.

Hi Jaypeesmith and NLK.... can you tell me what can I do to not get bankrupt and dead by this? Is there a way to get the data back? Do you have any contact address of Jason? They did set up a remote backup for my vps at 173.252.248.71 so is there a way I can get it from there. That Ip is not loading as well. I am just lost.

From what I could see, they were hosted out of Take 2 Hosting. What you could do is contact them to see if their boxes are still there. If so, as long as the data has not been wiped, hopefully you can get your data back and move to a new host ASAP to minimize downtime damage.

Just mailed them at sales at the rate of take2hosting.com. Will let you guys know about the update from them. Do you have any idea about what should info I need to provide them?

And thanks a lot NLK.

Hopefully, if they have not wiped the servers, being able to login would prove that you have higher level access.

Hi NLK should I send this email to their support as well as support is usually faster in general at most webhosts? Also, should I include my login/pass to them too in the email? I have never been in a worse situation than this, just need someone to help me out

I would never send your user/pass to them. They should instruct you as what to do, in order to validate you are who you say you are. Unfortunately, the only thing you can do is play the waiting game. I have also contacted their Payment Gateway, 2Checkout, to request a refund for this months hosting payment, which I paid on the 31st, and you may want to do the same.

This is definitely a pinch that 2HourServers has put us all into. I am personally moving to a new host because of this. I cannot carry out a business with this kind of practice going on, regardless of their excuse for why this has happened. 2HourServers, as a host, has lost all my trust in them (whatever was left after having daily connectivity issues). This is embarrassing me, to my customers. Had I been a more vengeful person, I would definitely file suit against 2HourServers...

Posted by Chaos Inc, 04-04-2011, 05:59 PM
Also, can either of you guys send me a PM or email me directly if you hear from them (2hourservers) first? I will do the same if I hear first and can let you know if you tell me to.

I am looking at either DirectSpace, out of Portland, OR, or ClubUptime, out of Dallas, TX. DirectSpace.net's pricing is closer in similarities to 2HourServers pricing, but I think Club Uptime may have a slightly better reputation. I am talking it over with my partners.

It will be fine if you PM me.

Thats weird. Unfortunately I do not give out my email, publicly, to the forums. I have accepted your friends request though, if thats what the hold up was.

It appears I cannot PM you either. Strange.

To the WHT Community,

We would like to clarify a few things regarding 2hourservers.net. Shortly after 5 PM PDT on April 3 all network services to 2hourservers.net were suspended.

We have since had a number of inquiries from 2hourservers.net customers as to the status of services as well as to the availability of any data they may have had stored on 2hourservers.net servers. One such inquiry pointed us to this thread so we felt it appropriate to make a posting here.

We would like to first and foremost note that all servers which 2hourservers.net was using are currently in-tact and have not been altered since services were suspended. This means that if your data was on the servers at the time services were suspended then it should still be there.

While we cannot discuss the specifics of the 2hourservers.net account, we have decided to resume partial services to each of the servers so that direct 2hourservers.net customers can at least gain access to retrieve their data. Port 80 services are blocked but all other services are open.

We don't currently have any of the administrators passwords and we have no way of verifying the identity of 2hourservers.net customers. This means that we will be unable to assist with technical issues on individual accounts (such as lost passwords, services unavailable, etc.). We will also be unable to transfer servers to new accounts since we have no way of verifying that a single server belongs to a single customer.

It is worth noting to 2hourservers.net customers that the new owner of 2hourservers.net indicated (about 24 hours ago now) that he's "moved everyones data already". This suggests that 2hourservers.net already has your data moved somewhere, but we have no way of confirming this nor was there any indication as to where the data has been moved.

Partial network connectivity will remain in place until 7 PM PDT on Wednesday, April 6. After that time we cannot guarantee connectivity will remain in place. Should you have any questions or concerns please contact support [at] take2hosting.com (please do not use WHT Private Message -- we cannot address this issue via PM).

Thanks a loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooot for the confirmation msherman. I am on a dial up with 5KBPS connection so downloading the entire backup is almost impossible for me given the time frame and the backup method.

I will email you shortly as I just need a wee bit help and assurance from you guys. Thanks again. You have no idea how much I appreciate this.

Posted by jaypeesmith, 04-04-2011, 10:55 PM
msherman, first of all, thank you for coming here and shedding some light on this situation. Clearly, you did not have to do so. I, for one, am grateful you did, though. Furthermore, thank you for allowing customers the option of getting their data back. Obviously, there is effort and expense on your company's part in doing do. That is very classy of you.

With that being said, it should not have fallen on you to do what the owner of 2hourservers should have done - communicate with his customers.

2hourservers had started to develop a good reputation around here. Sadly, in about a week's time, the new ownership has seemingly undone that.

I'm already arranging other hosting. The beauty in all this is that I have choices. Perhaps 2hourservers' new owner should remember that when dealing with customers.

The problem is that I have not received any email on the migration. Only received the email about CEO change, I am also glad that there is an update from Take 2 Hosting.

I will wait patiently for the transfer to complete. Good, that SolusVM is up but won't be long.

I see that my IP is also responding with Ping.

This really really sucks. Charlie should have at least told us that the downtime due to this migration will take such a long time. Or at least should have helped us through this. He shows us no sign whatsoever and is not receiving PMs either. Jason already seems like the most irresponsible person ever who didnt even send us a migration related/notification mail. This is just sad and a complete disaster for me.

Posted by matheweis, 04-06-2011, 01:53 AM
Chaos Inc, it looks like 2hourservers was hosted on take2hosting.com. msherman from take2hosting.com says they opened up other ports so that you can at least get you data if you can get to your server via ssh. I verified that I was able to get to my old VM this way. Hope this helps.

It sounds to me that Charlie stepped out of the picture and Jason was/is running the day-to-day operations.

I've been looking for a new host, but I was getting a 50% off lifetime deal on my 2GB Xen VPS, and I haven't been able to find any other provider that can match that. Any thoughts?

You can't really say 2hourserver is a scammer because it still has to pay its dedicated servers and it costs about $250 USD.

We will need to wait and see the outcome!

from who u know that he pay his dedicated server?

Posted by computerwis, 04-09-2011, 12:32 AM
You can't have a vps from 2HourServers if they don't pay there dedicated server. Also, they offered CPanel/WHM as part of the VPS packages, they still had to pay $15 for sure.

I was on the Node 3 server which was from Take2Hosting.
I knew it from common-sense, you can't start a host without a dedicated server.

Thank You.

At this point, I think it's at least safe to say that Jason is acting like a scammer. Look at what has happened:
  1. He has taken money and ceased to provide a service for which he's already been paid.
  2. One week ago, He told customers that they would be moving to a new data center by the following Wednesday. Those accounts are still offline with no explanation as to why.
  3. The company's site went dark, leaving customers with no means of inquiring about the status of their accounts.
  4. The owner of the company has made no effort to contact affected customers. Instead, it fell on the server provider, Take2Hosting to shed a little light on what went on.

As I've stated before, the owner could have easily come on here to share his side of the story. Instead, he seems to have gone into hiding. So, if he's not a scammer, he should really consider not acting like one.

I wouldn't get too excited. I believe that block of IP addresses might have been owned by Take2Hosting because, in the email before disappearing, Jason Lewis indicated that IP addresses would be changing. I suspect that this IP will be used by a new client.

sebaitmakna, I got the same email last night. I guess I'll know in a few days if I got a refund.

Did anyone hear anything back from 2hourservers? We hosted with them and moved literally the day we got the email saying they were "moving servers" and refused to tell us where / how / why so we immediately backed up and left.. The credit card company wont give us a refund though because we paid via Google Checkout and Google Checkout doesnt (seem) to have a disputes policy / anywhere you can lodge disputes directly

So I'm guessing 2hourservers has gone for good? Lets hope the guy isnt running another VPS somewhere?
