Hello,
After some months with just small hiccups we are down again.. All ther 20 servers we still have on FDC-Denver are down.
Who else ? |

Power outage? |

Oops wrong spot |

Must be a power outage since all of our servers were rebooted. If it was a network outage then we wouldn't have had reboots. Power outages are the worst kind since you can expect some database corruption with such a hard shutoff. |

Hm that is bad. None of our servers are online. Last time we had to wait for 4 hours.
We gotta move everyone and sell these 20-25 servers asap.. FDC = Headache. |

This was my FDC ticket response when I asked to check why server was offline and if there was a network outage:
Quote:
Your server was unresponsive. I rebooted it, and it is back online now.

No mention of a network/power outage. |

Any update ? |
Posted by brc_csf, 10-27-2010, 07:26 PM |
I've been waiting for an update for 60 minutes..
I deserve this.. Had enough time to move everyone since the last issues (or constant issues?) but still haven't.. |

They are experiencing power issue. |

Ok.. Servers are coming back. They have been rebooted 54 minutes ago and I believe this power outage killed the switch. They got a new switch.
Only 1 of our servers is down.. Maybe they will take another 1.5 hour to reply. |

Did they tell you about the new switch? or you're just guessing?
I thought it would be a power outage as my server was rebooted twice & I did not have to open a ticket for it. |

They said there was a equipment failure and they were working on it. When servers started coming back I got the answer: "Switch issue, should be resolved"
And they already had an uptime of 54 minutes at that time.
Well. One of them still down. I believe this is the 5th or 6th power outage we face with them. |

Power fluctuations to a data center are not uncommon, thats what a UPS and power conditioning equipment are for. When you don't have a UPS in place, like FDC, it is common to have these sorts of interruptions. |

Hello Ryan!
One of the servers is dead.. Power up/down/up/down is not good for hardware. Now gotta wait some hours for the fix. I am happy that we have moved 99% to another IDC some months ago. |

From FDC Staff:
"There was a power issue which caused the main floor to go offline briefly. It has been resolved, so if you are still having trouble with any specific server, please let us know which one and we will take a look."
Not sure where this "switch" stuff is coming in to play....lol |

You haven't moved out yet? |

Wow, I help run a community that uses FDC servers, and if it was my choice of we host with, it would not be FDC. I have seen more problems with them in the last 2+ years then i have seen with my cheap shared Dreamhost account.
I really think FDC is garbage
But i guess you get what you pay for. |

6 hours later we had the server on, motherboard died.. Not sure if it is a result of the constant power failures, the poor hardware or poor PSU. |

It was probably caused from the sudden power loss. Having power removed from any computer is very stressful on hardware... Which is why a lot of datacenters have backup power supplies and generators so hundreds of servers don't get corrupt. |

I thought that events like that would kill the PSU and not the mobo.. Bad news mobos also die due to power loss |

Strange, the power issue much have been local to FDC. I didn't notice anything on our UPSs, just a few blocks from FDC. |
