frantech is down?
Posted by ramram, 07-08-2010, 11:29 AM |
hello , i bought vps from frantech 2 days ago .
and today it's down , and them website is down
is that usual ? i dont know what's wrong |
Posted by 123Andrew, 07-08-2010, 11:43 AM |
It hasn't been usual, not since the move to Hurricane Electric. This is actually the first outage since the move.
I'm actually curious as to why it happened as well, I'm quite confident francisco will MSN me later and tell me though. |

Seems their website is down. I think they are facing some serious problems. |
Posted by quad3datwork, 07-08-2010, 12:07 PM |
Yup, my Nagios reporting my Frantech VPS went out 45mins ago. |
Posted by qwizie, 07-08-2010, 12:29 PM |
Mine is well offline, but it seems their node 2 isn't, but the rDNS is not working. |
Posted by quad3datwork, 07-08-2010, 12:31 PM |
I got a response from James stating an e-mail will be sent out shortly. |
Posted by 123Andrew, 07-08-2010, 12:47 PM |
Seems that the site is back up, That's a good sign. |

Hey there,
We had an issue in one of our racks that caused our power strip to fail. HE was quick on their feet to get out to the rack and fix it back up but still, sucks that it happened.
I do apologize about the issue, we'll be having a tech go in later on this month todo a triple check on our strips.
Thanks,
Francisco |

Good to hear that it's all resolved and it's running fine for now. Things like this can happen and I think they were quick in resolving it. |

Don't think the problem is 100% resolved however.

Hey there,
Our 3rd node was showing oddness in the filesystem so it's doing it right now.
We're nearly done FSCK's on two of the nodes and there is a mass email going out to everyone covering what is going on.
I do apologize for the issue, at this point we're having a...lets say stern...talking to HE about why this happened. The problem wasn't one of our own doing so we're quite ticked off.
If anyone has multiple VM's, you can request that we seperate them over the two (and soon to be 3rd) racks.
Thanks!

For me the problem seems to be solved...thanks for the quick (re)action on this issue. |

Hey there,
You're welcome on that. I apologize for the issue but as you can see it was out of our hands
Thanks,
Francisco |

Hey there,
We were promised a new strip this morning but again the same issue happened.
We just had a tech go in and replace it for us personally so everyone on node01 is back online as well as any FT based VM's.
This has been a complete headache for us since we were in the middle of a FSCK on one of the boxes when the strip blew out no more than an hour ago
Thanks,
Francisco |

node01 is back online, but node03 is still down |
Posted by quad3datwork, 07-09-2010, 01:09 AM |
Second strip blew out?
Was it...
1) Replacement strip blew out? (very bad luck!)
or...
2) The server have dual PSUs connected to separate power sources and happens that second power source strip blew out too? On top of the first one... (also very bad luck!)
Have two pretty long downtime less than 24 hours. Can you double-check with HE to make sure whatever is necessary to ensure this don't happen too often? thanks. |

my vps online now
but i lost lot of files |
Posted by DeltaAnime, 07-10-2010, 05:11 AM |
Hey there,
Things are for the most part back online from that node.
We let the last FSCK run for about 9 hours but it just didn't want to get any further. Node01 recovered just fine after its full FSCK, but node03 had a 2nd power failure during its recovery process, breaking a lot of things much worse. The majority of VPS's, minus maybe 2 - 3, are loaded up with a few file errors.
As for refunds/credits, we are issuing both for users on node03 that request them. This whole thing shouldn't have happened and we're already making some changes to make sure it doesn't happen again, namely:
- Proper power strips, not just the basic ones HE is normally using. While they are NORMALLY fine, I'm starting to think that when you draw a lot of powers on them, they just stop working properly over time. For our 3rd rack we'll be installing a proper power distribution unit just to be safe.
- Nightly backups coming much sooner than planned. Originally we were planning to have nightly backups in place for sometime late next month. At this point we've sped this up and already have most of the hardware for this en-route to Fremont. These will be included, for free, with your plans.
If you're able to, just give your server a fresh reinstall just to make sure everything is in tact.
Again, we can't apologize enough for this, we're rather pissed over this considering this power strip has been perfectly fine since we racked up in May.
If you wish to go over anything, some ideas, or just want to yell, you're welcome to drop me a line on MSN @ francisco@frantech.ca
Thanks,
Francisco |

If you open up one of the top of the line APC pdu's you would be surprised at how cheaply they are made when their cost is considered. The contacts are just stamped sheet copper designed for quick assembly and lowest cost. Doesn't inspire any confidence at all. |

I don't mean to hop on board an outage thread (one that seems to have been handled as professionally as possible after an unfortunate problem), but to what power strip are you referring, and what happened? I've never heard of anything like that with any PDU. Certainly I've seen at least one power outage scramble the display and control mechanisms when they came back (a simple restart solved the issue) and the occasional network timeout.

What exactly are you looking for, screwdown clamps? That outlet design is identical to the outlets in your house and any other piece of equipment you have in daily life; how often do you have issues with appliances having power failures in an outlet that's been disturbed less than a few dozen times? I can't say I've ever as much as heard of an issue with APC contacts. |
