Servint is down! [network issues]

Posted by chuckeee, 12-05-2009, 09:39 AM
Hi,
I have been a dedicated customer with Servint.net for the past 3-4 years, and my experience hss been generally good.
However, as of 20 minutes ago my website (and the service I provide to more than 10,000 people) has gone down.

What's worse, Servint's OWN WEBSITE IS DOWN.
None of their phone numbers are picking up either!!

This is an absolute total disaster.

Please can someone let me know if there is anything I can do.

Thanks

I wanted to acknowledge that ServInt is having a customer affecting network issue at the moment. Our engineers are hard at work diagnosing and addressing the problem as I type this. We will use this as one of the venues to provide information to our clients as we seek to resolve this as quickly as possible.

There really isn't anything you can do if they're site is down and if they aren't answering there phones.

Chuckeee,

There is an issue we are working on resolving. I have posted a thread here:

<<threads merged>>

and will update it as additional information becomes available.

I'm a customer of Servint too and I noticed the problem too. Hope its nothing serious.

I've used this website and they are down worldwide.

Thanks for the update, Christian. Can you estimate the *minimum* amount of downtime we should expect, assuming a best case recovery with no snags?

Wish you the very best to get it sorted soon.

Thanks for the heads up. As mentioned above, do you have information as to how long this may take and \ or whats happened?

It's really up to you. I personally think, you switched and the wrong time and it's just a coincidence.

I plan on having estimates and more details soon, and I'll keep you informed as soon as I have details to provide. It's an 'all hands on deck' situation and our top tech talent is addressing the issue.

After searching on Twitter for 'servint' I can see that it looks like most, if not all, of Servint's sites were down for a full 40 minutes, and have only just now come back online.

The only means of communicating with Servint was via Twitter throughout this.

Does this happen often? I just switched all my sites over to my new servint server last night and customer care phone number or ticket desk etc are not working either...

This does not happen often at all. ServInt's last service affecting outage (one that affected more than a handful of customers due to some sort of localized hardware failure or something) was in 2004.

Thanks, just been following it on twitter. I can say that any kind of outage at servint is extremely rare and I have every confidence it will be up asap. In the (two weeks off) six years I have been with servint I have only had one outage I remember and their boss was out sat in a hole in a street somewhere getting it fixed asap.

I (a representative of ServInt) am communicating with people at the link provided above as well.

Kaiser Sose, the last outage I am aware of was in 2004. servint is extremely reliable. I do wish they had a separate 911 noc website, on completely different dns nameservers and network, for status updates etc.

Posted by richy, 12-05-2009, 10:17 AM
That would be useful but they appear to be using twitter to communicate quite a lot which is equally useful.

We are coming up. Again, details will be forthcoming as they are available. Right now we are focused on restoring service to 100%.

Check the other thread for updates. We are on our way up and will provide details over there - right now we're focused on restoring service to 100%.

FYI, phones were operational and being answered the entire time. Some people may have (probably did) experienced problems due to call volume.

Thanks Christian, my sites are back up now. However, I would request you guys to move the forum to a completely different DC if possible, so that if either of the ServInt's DC are down, we can still get updates on the forum.

All our sites are live again and I can ssh in.

They have a good reputation here so probably just bad luck on my timing but I will give them the benefit of the doubt seen as they migrated my sites and were really nice

I would actually like to say that Servint have been very good over the past 4 years, with this incident being the only blemish.
The only reason I made this post was because I forgot about Twitter and their support site was down, and their phone numbers weren't working (due to being overloaded with other people calling).
I think that Servint's reputation shouldn't be harmed by this incident as they've been the best dedicated webhost I have found.

How long was the downtime?

Posted by tavisrudd, 12-05-2009, 10:39 AM
1hr 13 min for us.

I still have one of my vps down. I have one up. Servint's support portal still not working for me.

There are 3 total datacenters. We market 2 because one is at capacity and we're not selling new product into it. We've got the forums load balanced between datacenters so that if there's a problem at one the forums stay up. Honestly we do that on our network because we trust ours more than others'. This is the first network affecting outage we've had since 2004, which doesn't make the situation today acceptable but it does put it in a bit of context. Still, I'm not against exploring other things that'll add layers of redundancy. Thanks again for your patience.

We just came back online! I wasn't worried.....these guys are top notch!

Posted by roccol, 12-05-2009, 10:47 AM
Since we do not know the nature of this problem. Is there a reason why one of my vps works and the other doesn't?

Everything up now. Thanks.

My VPS still is down and can't enter in servint portal(https://portal.servint.net).

Thanks.

We should be back at 100%. Can you check again? If you're still seeing problems and you're having problems getting to the portal for some reason PM me details or send me an e-mail message and I'll personally have our techs investigate it for you. dawson at servint dot com.
