EnotchNetworks VPS DOWN !

Hello,
Now it's 24 hours my VPS with Enotchnetworks.com is DOWN !
first they said they are under DOS attack and then they are saying they have LOST ALL OUR DATA include BACKUP server !
how even that is possible ?
read the messages i've got from them :

Hello,
We are suffering from a denial of service attack targeted against our 38.108.111.0/24 IP block which hosts a good segment of our VPS's.
We are working with our network folks to mitigate this attack and will keep you updated.
2.
Official statement:
At about 7pm this morning we began experiencing high traffic aimed at one of our VPS nodes (zeus.hostidea.net). This attack was well coordinated and was intended at impacting the network which it did for a matter of mins before our engineering folks were able to mitigate the problem. At 6am this morning, we began experiencing problems with the Zeus node and its system stability and upon rebooting we were confronted with an “auhwipe message” hinting that we have been affected by an intentional attack and data has been lost. We do not have enough information to confirm which vulnerability we have been affected by just yet but our backup systems have also been affected.
At this point we have started preliminary tasks on the storage systems that are connected to the Zeus node to attempt a recovery. So far we are able to retrieve data but we will need more time to image and begin working before we can provide customers with their information if possible.
Customers on our Poseidon, Hades & Neptunus nodes are not affected during this time but we are taking extra precautions to ensure that we do not have this problem on those systems.
We will continue to provide updates as they become available from the onsite team.

Yes my main VPS with them is down since yesterday and I received the same messages but the newer cheap one I have with them is running fine, shame it's not the other way around....! |

Sorry folks. Hope you get your server back up and running. However, I am not sure how data was corrupted on the main as well as backup server? May be they can shed some more light on this?

It's pathetic. I lost all of my users data (all 25,000 records...., 17,000 of which are active daily), 24 hours downtime has cost me about $500 in ad and microtransaction earnings. I have a cron the runs hourly, and the last cron report i have received is at wednesday at 6am. Before that i missed a few crons due to the server being down for a short time BEFORE that (When i messaged them i got the standard "oh, i can access it with our tools, weird how our vps panel can't connect. It'll fix itself, don't worry).
Ugh, now i know why enotch was the only host i could afford... now that i have the money to switch back to geekstorage, i don't have recent user info (i do my backups once a week, which should be today, and my backup is missing 99% of the users records as i had a HUGE spike in registrations after posting an ad).
So, what type of liability do they face? I can't even access their T.O.S to see if they are covered by this.
The really sad part? They just sent me an invoice for another month of hosting with them. I seriously laughed.
Any enotch customer should call this number and complain: 1-800-871-3764
I plan to do the same once i fully wake up. |

If you re-read the post you will see that the ddos attack was stopped. The ddos attack was used to impact the stability of the system but we have not confirmed if this is related to the current problem that we are having with the Zeus node. Stop commenting on things you know nothing about. |

I got website hosted with them at 38.108.110.XXX ip block. And i cant connect to port 80 as well as ftp (port 21 responds but thats all, no login prompt or nothing). Im usimg MTR from europe and i cant really see ANY SETIOUS packet loss to my server.
We are waiting for explanations.

Some questions here:
1) U saying that DDOS was to 38.108.111.0/24 network. Your websites enotch.com and my.enotch.com are on 38.108.110.XXX/XX class. So why they are also inaccessible?
2) How come that someone compromised your system in the same time it was DDOSed and inaccessible?
3) How come that you lost also backup? (one server hosting?)
4) What type of DDOS was that? (i think u got some router logs or some firewalls?)

edit2: Quick question... You claim that the DDOS is OVER.... but my IP is still unresponsive, both port 80 and 21 (the only two ports i really use)...
Another question: Why, if your website is down, as well as EVERYONES VPS on the zeus node are down... why do you feel it is appropriate to send customers invoices? |

I wonder if this falls under negligence on enotch's part. I think i'll forward this off to my attorney along with the ToS found from the google cache, and see what he says. At this point i'm pretty fed up with enotch. First it was FTP problems, then it was the server going down but "It wasent really down, we could see it on our end", and now it's been down for well over 24 hours, which in the end costs me money.
Oh, and the fact they were so incompetant they lost the BACKUP server to a DDOS pretty much shows the level of support i should expect from them in the future. |

Quick Update: We are making progress. We have imaged the storage system that was attached to the Zeus node. The attacker made significant attempts to erase the data on disk but we have seen signs that we may have a successful recovery. However, we have been able to recover data from a few separate 5 min dumps. We are hoping that this can be resolved shortly once the dumps are complete. We are looking at about ~500GB of data so this has taken some time to complete.
We apologize for the lack of communication today but we are really getting hit today with the attack on our shared hosting platform and our own Enotch server infrastructure.

I just got my VPS like 3 days ago, I have approximately 8K of data on it, which is easily replaced (a shell and php script that run every minute) so if you could just hook me up with a fresh login on another server I'd be quite happy! (I should have an open ticket with this request as well). |

I am not sure if everyone saw the last post that we made but we did say that updates would be posted on Twitter first before they would be posted here. I cannot say why but this is how it has worked out logistically.
Everyone keeps asking about admins would you rather that the admins come here and answer your questions or work on the problem while we provide periodic updates like we said we would in the last post here and like I am doing now.

In my opinion, one of the greatest points of failure here is the lack of communication.
enotch: You need to take more aggressive steps to reach out to your customers when these things happen.
Send us all an email.
If you can't send an email, then you should have posted to twitter within hours of the initial downtime.
Even now, your updates are too infrequent. It's the least you can do. |

I dont believe that this post was rude especialy since you had to use profanity in your reply and filter our characters.
As you can see other people have posted here that their VPS is up and running which is why the announcements are focused on the Zeus node. This is the only node down at the moment and it is in block we use for VPS hosting. There are dedicated servers and colocation customers in other blocks that are up and running so if everything routed through the zeus node then wouldnt the entire network be down besides the topics referenced here in this thread? |

I really dont care about your "virtual" zeus node. For a 2 days i dont have access to my website which is hosted on your shared hosting not VPS.
The best thing is that when i want to ping your webhost (38.108.110.162) the different router/firewall/machine responds:

Mine's still not up If you were restoring backups, I was added to the server maybe 24 hours before it died so maybe my VPS wasn't even in the backup?
You can create me a FRESH vps I didn't have anything on there but 2 shell scripts that I can reupload in about .01 seconds and I'm golden.

it's 3 hours past the time they said it would take to get it back up. 5 hours ago they said on twitter that at our request they are going to communicate with us more.... ironic how their last communication is a promise to communicate with us more, especially after not hearing anything when its 3+ hours after the time it was supposed to be back....

the second one is confusing... you are GOING to image, and it's going to take 6 hours (in which case your over an hour late...), or you HAVE, and it took 6 hours (in which case you are THREE hours late), or you are in the MIDDLE (in which case you are between 2-5 hours late...)?

I know your feeling , it suck when you start with successful website then suddenly everything goes down in unexpected way and the worse is you never know if it's gonna fixed and if it fixed can you get your site back to the level it was before down !!
for me in the same day my enotch vps goes down I got my paypal limited and my shared hosting account with another company suspended my account and now am waiting and contacting them for backup and you know when shared host suspend you can't get into cpanel though you spend all the time digging support tickets for backup like bum
all these problems come to me in one day , can you believe it it's true when said all problems come at once , I will call that day the BLACK WEDNESDAY
I feel i want to surrender because hosting thing is very unstable and hard to maintain a site in such situation maybe leaving internet is good idea and put all this headache behind your back !!!? |

Yeah this is kinda funny I mean at this point it's gotten a little silly. If I had something important running on my VPS I'd be hot, as it is I'm just mildly amused at how long this has dragged on with no resolution. By now I'da rented a high end server somewhere, dropped Virtuozzo or openVZ on it and at least gotten everyone back online with a new fresh VPS and for those with backups who don't need enotch to restore data, done, for those who need backups well "hopefully soon" I guess, I mean if you can't get into a backup you can't get into it, no amount of gnashing of teeth and tearing of robes will make it happen. But getting new servers online shouldn't take longer than contacting one of many of the providers advertising in the dedicated offers forum "down there <points to the bottom of the WHT forum list>". |

We are working as fast as possible. The updates that we provided on Twitter last night were intended to provide insight into the level of effort that is put in to recover your data. We are literally restoring data using disaster recovery tools one sector of the hard disk at a time. Anyone that is familiar with these tools is aware of the time involved just watching a screen for prompts copying data and then restoring this data.
We are working as fast as we can and will restore everyone in the order that the data is made available.

Just an observation, but isn't the bottom line - particularly if you're running a business - that you should ensure you have your own backups off-site?
Harsh way to learn a lesson if you've been affected by this, and my sympathy to those that have been (it went down just as I was researching the company before signing up!), but a valuable lesson nonetheless. |

This is getting to be more than enough. I have put down $400 for colocation for this month, and I needed to move in last week. Why are these guys taking so damn long to get there act together? I feel like going to there corporate office, but i doubt i'll be able to get in. Anyone know if it is possible to get into their business office? I'm located in uptown Manhattan, so it's not really that far. |

Your VPS info was sent 2 days ago as it was a new VPS and you did no require any immediate recovery. |

I got my requests answered finally, and It really wasnt that long of a wait, considering all the data recovery that is being done. Surviving a DDOS attack isn't easy, and Enotch is going to vastly improving there security after this. |

I have no emails from *enotch* in my inbox since 09/02 and I was unable to login to the help system this morning it was giving an SSL record too long error when I tried to login (in Directadmin it usually means SSL isn't enabled for the domain).
I'll try the helpdesk again, is the info in there perhaps?

It's not a threat. It's a matter of business. In the days it has taken you to get my info back, i have lost a considerable amount of money. I have also repeatedly asked just for a backup of my data, and i would be on my way, but that too has been ignored.
I'm only willing to lose so much money before i start invoicing you for my losses... at that point i'm pretty sure you would be sending me a backup.

Still haven't seen an email from enotch I did finally get into my.enotch.com looks like it no longer forces an HTTPS: connection. I checked to see if maybe the info was left in a ticket or something but nope, no tickets. So I went to products/services wondering if maybe I could get the IP address from that area, and clicked Manage VPS but it just gave an error.
Maybe someone could just PM the info to me? |

Please read what I am typing carefully.
You have repeatedly asked for backups but you cannot get the backups until the deleted data has been copied off of the impacted disks and onto storage media which is currently what is taking this long. Now if you have another way to speed up this process then please by all means provide one but if not then you will have to wait and actually even if you send invoices no backup will be sent because we are not just sitting around playing with our fingers.
I suggest that you do not send invoices. It will result in other course of action that I am sure you will not be able to continue with financially.
I understand that many people are impacted and we are doing the best we can to recover everything. If the data was on disk already we would not even be having this conversation so please stop the nonsense. |

Another lesson learned by those who think it's the hosts responsibility to make backups.
When will people learn?
Yes it sucks that you're all having issues. I can relate because I've been there. But once you read a few outage threads on WHT you should learn quickly that hosts aren't responsible for your data. Weekly or (even better) daily backups are a requirement. |

Lost revenue for me (based on monthly totals for ads+payments) is worth several several months, and even if it came back up now, client confidence is down, meaning i'll be losing ALOT more money in the long run. |

Well, enotch is pretty busy recovering as much data as possible. In a situation like this, you should be possible that your data is recovered, period. Also, if downtime will cause you a signifigant drop in revenue, you should have a backup server for a situation like this. |

I think they lie, maybe they cant recover any data, and now just give us hope , and thinks how to say, that all data are lost, and wount be recovered! They sayd that they will finish all before 2 days, and some vps are running, but as I saw 0 vps were running, and now they again do some fixing, recover jobs! for me its suspicious! |

I've not called them a liar (seems like everyone is getting in trouble for doing that lately) but I do think they have serious issues that they are not adequately explaining. They called me - a customer (or soon to be former customer) - "the most annoying" by bringing up this same concern via twitter and questioning why we should trust them moving forward based on how they are handling this situation and criticizing their lack of communication regarding the problems they are having. After saying I should just be "happy" that they are working to recover the data, I told them that was inadequate to keep me as a customer. I think it's very telling how they are responding to criticism. You have to have thick skin in these kinds of situations because you can't expect customers who are out of the water for more than a week to be cheering you on. I think it's incredible that they are calling customers names and questioning their "common sense", in public to their faces. And yet they chose twitter as their means of communicating. I think they've done a poor job of communicating, setting expectations and meeting them. I think they had a poor disaster recovery plan and even worse execution and I've seen nothing to indicate that they had adequate plans in place to prevent and manage attacks in the first place.
I would hope anyone wanting to do business with them in the future demand that they address those issues professionally and thoroughly. Best of luck to anyone else affected by this outage. |

While I agree our wording was incorrect for this situation. The timelines and the ETA's that we are providing is based on what we see on screen and our own experiences working with the software tools for the last 6-7 days now nonstop for 24hrs a day. We've even tried a data recovery company in NYC who charged us 4000 and could not even recover the bit of data that we recovered. We tried numerous software tools the tool that we are using now has an OK support team overseas and this is leading to some issues in communication.
If we think about it this way the Zeus node had about 34 VPS's on it. Each VPS probably has just under 2,000,000 files if I am not wrong and this program builds in the following way; 1) Scans for Partitions, 2) Reconstructs a file system based on the provided file system type, 3) Scans for files (This takes 5hrs), 4) Builds a Directory structure based on all data in the previous steps (This always reportst that it will take 12hrs).
Now we have tried everything to make this program run faster but it doesnt make a difference, this is a normal process that must go through these steps. The program must complete each of these steps or we will not be able to provide or extract any files for any individual user or folder.
I know its been a difficult process for all involved and our customers who have been down as a result of this issue. However, keep in mind that there were backups of each of these platforms which were deleted and the files themselves on the VPS and Hosting Servers were also deleted. So this software process is literally being done to recover files which have been deleted from disk. |

Mathematically that is correct. However the ETAs sometime go from 3468hrs to 12hrs and back up again. I can say that we hit a milestone where the VPS Directory Tree is being built now which has not happened in 2 days. The elapsed time is about 15mins and 34seconds and it looks to be about 5% done so we will see where this goes. Again, thanks to everyone for their patience. |

It is likely that they will all come back at once. However, this will depend on the states of the vzid.conf files. If there is a problem with those files then we will have to do this one at a time. |

I was on a new VPS with another provider within 2 days of it going off as I had a bad feeling. The other VPS I have with enotch was not affected so will keep that one. All I had to do was upload all my files to the new VPS as I keep a backup on my PC. I feel sorry for everyone involved, including enotch, they did not ask for this and this will affect them financially. |

I think it was all but the Hades but I am not 100% sure on that but it was more than just the Zeus node, Poseidon is affected also. |

What is the inconsistency? The restore process is still running. We have not died as a company as there are other services that we provide that are running without any impact. So what are you talking about? If you don't know what you are talking about then please go away. We did not ask for this to happen to us and in fact quotes that we received from other companys had an ETA of 3-4 weeks which we can provide as proof this is also in addition to the company that attempted to do the recovery but was unable to find any files in the free analysis. All of these actions have a paper trail that can be verified. We could have given up then but we did not. We are not a data recovery company but have surely invested the time, money and knowledge to learn what needs to be done to recover our customers data.
To be clear we are being completely honest about what we are doing. We care about the customers that we have/had and just want to provide you with your data so that we can pickup the pieces and proceed with our business.
The complexity here is that the data was deleted from the disks. I know we have stated this over and over again but it is important to understand the complexity of the situation as justification as to why this is taking so long. In the previous set of analysis we just had a long list of files in the / directory with no directory structure. Now that we have things the way they need to be we are simply waiting as per the Twitter updates for the recovery to finish. Yes, the recovery is slow in fact its terribly slow but we can't make it faster. I hope everyone understands despite the impact to your day-to-day businesses. |

Unfortunately this is correct. We used another WHMCS script to connect to HyperVM. If you want I can PM you with some information that should be able to assist you in the recovery. It's not an easy process. |

My personal suggest would be to just drop enotch untill they get there server back up.
I have done this same thing and im starting all over as my clients had left me, as i was waiting so long for Enotch!
Im still waiting for my refund from them!

I did get a refund of my first month's services. I kept my vps and if when the invoice comes due I feel like they're doing "ok" I'll renew. However, what I'm using their service for isn't all that important and it doesn't "cost me money" if my VPS is down so take that into account with my apparently "easy going" attitude, had this failure cost me money I'd have moved to a new provider after just a FEW hours of downtime like that. All things in perspective. |

For the VPS of my 2 that went down I had to move to another provider to get my service up again, does not mean I am dumping Enotch though and the other VPS I have with them has been solid. None of this was their fault or wanted by them. I am sure this is hurting then financially also. I have no issues with them and I hope this all works out for them, I am staying as their client anyway. |

Yes, this is an issue effecting most openvz hosting providers, and thus I think enotch is doing a pretty good job getting everything working, and all the backups recovered. There support times have been fast throughout this whole issue, and I hope that they can recover from this, patch up there server's security, and emerge as a better provider. |

I would say the same to you. Please do your research, the reason that they were comprised has to do with an exploit in the OpenVZ kernel, were a user is able to get root access. That was how the AUHwipe was executed. The issue at hand is the fact that OpenVZ DOES have security flaws, which need to be fixed. |

Considering it is commonly known that openvz has had many exploits in the past, and these servers didn't have non ssh certificate access from the outside, it would make sense that it was an openvz exploit. You clearly have no idea what you're talking about nor do you know how to lookup security advisories so I will end this conversation here. You sound like a conspiracy theorist.
FYI almost all incidents can be explained that they happened due to staff negligence, ignorance and slipups. If an incident did indeed happen due to 0day vulnerability it is matter of days when a security advisory is published and patches released. |

As much as the situation is upsetting you guys maybe just wait a bit longer for a response from enotch. I am sure an established company like them would not just lie and if the data had just gone they would have said. Maybe easy for me to say but trying to look at the whole picture. |

OK, let me imagine the whole picture :
About one month ago our data deleted by a hacker, and this established company which you are talking about was lieing and they never had backups on another hard disk...
it's now after one month, they have said about 20 times that we will have our data TOMORROW and you can see this on their Twitter ...
and now they don't answer tickets, then don't update the Twitter and then even don't refund
ok, let me say they can not give my data back because it's gone but WHY WOULD NOT THIS ESTABLISHED COMPANY REFUND TO ME ?
it sounds like a fraud to me !

Well they have not run off or anything as my other VPS with them is running fine. I say established company as they have been around since 2002 in one form or another. I cannot answer why you have had no response, I expect they are still flat out with all this. I also hope you do get a refund and data back. I also hope enotch can recover from this disaster as it has become. |

I'm colocated with enotch, and I happen to know about the backup process. In order to do block recovery, it is very expensive, and takes alot of time. They do have the backups now, and certainly are not a fraud company. Enotch is one of the few companies on here that actually has a legitimant business, and would pay the fees to recover the data. Those automated payment messages can most likely be ignored, and I would contact them if you have any billing issues. |

Contacting them is pointless. I have a ticket that's remained unanswered for THREE weeks, despite me adding something new to the ticket each day, asking where the response is. They say they have my data, but since then they have ignored ANY talks i have tried to have with them.
So that is, in my opinion, fraud. That's something i will be bringing up to the NY AG. And i have all the e-mails, and have archived their twitter page to prove they are full of ****. |

Try Pming them on WHT, you should get a responce. They do have the backups now, last I hear they were getting a kernel panic uppon VPS boot, due to some file naming issues. The bottom line is your websites files are fine, only system files are effected. They DO have your data. Anyway, In my opinion, it isn't fruad, since you will be refunded and rewarded for the downtime, and they now have your data. Many other providers(even some larger ones), would refuse to recover the data, and would only offer you some extra service time.(Read the TOS of some popular hosting companies, and you will get what I mean) |

Thanks to all for their patience with us during this process. We were not deceitful at all and while many of our ETA's were missed due to software complications we are pleased to say that we recovered the data that we committed to restore. There are a few mysql fixes that need to happen.
Our image hosting site 66pix.com is also in the process of being restored along with is 330,000+ images. |

As we approach the completion of all VPS's that we were able to recover which is over 95% for all those affected including 100% on the shared hosting accounts, I would like to extend thanks to all for their patience during this time.
In addition to working to complete any remaining requests for restores, we have taken measures to increase our ability to react quickly in a disaster recovery situation for all of our platforms and also improve security and threat identification.

I can't access any of my VPS, sales department told me the IP of my new VPS is 38.108.111.*** I try to login to WHM but login attempts fail even reseting the password with HyperVM, also SSH connection to 38.108.111.***:22 are refused
I'd also like to know how to access to my old VPS or wherever the restored files are, My old IP times out, also when I try to login to https://poseidon.hostidea.net:8887/ using my old VPS name it shows " Alert: This login has been Disabled. Please contact the administrator" |

Would you mind PMing me the ticket number? Also I only see one ticket that fits this description in the support desk and the cause was that the individual was using the login information of the old VPS and not the NEW vps which was sent days ago. |
