Posted by dre_, 06-25-2006, 12:44 PM

Yes... down here too. Anyone have a tachnical reason for this? They charge top dollar (double plus)... it's always diappointing when they fail (which is too common).

Posted by dre_, 06-25-2006, 03:26 PM
Ok, just spoke to a techie, apparently their ISP is down, a broken fiber optic cable caused this. They also said all the south east of england, that use that provider has no internet. They said thery are digging up the road to replace it. So it will be back on around 2am BST

Posted by JenniH, 06-25-2006, 03:26 PM
I didn't realize that... it's good information... and explains a lot. Thanks. In view of this, we have too many sites there, and will be shifting a good few out (perhaps all, depending on review).

I've been at "Queue Position #3" for twenty minutes now on the phone... perhaps some of you guys are on there before me, introducing them to reality. So much for the "UK's biggest host". Looks like they have got away with cheapo hosting at top price for too long to be frank.

Anyone know the deal with Fasthosts? http://www.fasthosts.com They are UK's largest host and appear to be totally down as of today. No warning! Any gossip on this?

Posted by JenniH, 06-25-2006, 03:59 PM
UPDATE: "Our supplier informs us that it will be 2-3am in the morning". It says it all really. Supplier in the singular. Support who are simply delivering an apology and a vague target. Goodbye Fasthost.

They seem to have been down all day along with UKREG, I have tried to call but got no answer

Posted by Jefff, 06-25-2006, 04:02 PM
Fasthost are down at the moment (and have been for the last 6-7 hours) because of a problem with Telewest in the Gloucester area. It's also affecting Telewest TV, phone and broadband customers.

Posted by aldwych, 06-25-2006, 04:04 PM
I thought they used more than one carrier in the multimillion pound datacenter they have

They claim to. Looks like they lied. This is from Google's cache of their website : Dedicated Server SLA The highest levels of uptime are your guarantee. Thanks to our multiple redundant connections to the internet, Fasthosts are so confident that your server will experience the highest levels of up-time, that if your server does experience downtime... we'll refund your money. If ever Fasthosts' internet connectivity fails to meet the 99.9% up-time guarantee for your server, then you'll be eligible to claim a refund of one day's service fee for every hour that your server is unavailable.

Posted by aldwych, 06-25-2006, 04:09 PM
Well it looks like everyones welcome to a 2 week refund so far this month!

Posted by Jefff, 06-25-2006, 04:11 PM
It's 'only' been seven hours so far.

Posted by aldwych, 06-25-2006, 04:24 PM
Thats 7 hours to long in anyones opinion. Think how much revenue a large ecommerce site will have lost today!

Posted by JenniH, 06-25-2006, 05:16 PM
The outrage is in fact that the "Uk's Largest Web Hosting Company" (THEIR WORDS) have a single inlay supplier. That might perhaps be considered to be a lack of due diligence for a serious business (one for the lawyers), rather than me. In terms of a business customer it must surely mean finding a better host. It's hard to imagine a world class supplier being caught making such a short sighted economy. IMHO, any biz caught twice by this deserve what they get. I can't imagine too many serious providers staying with them now that such evidence is on the table.

Posted by dre_, 06-25-2006, 05:17 PM
They have been down most of the day. I think their ISP has to get permission from the council to digg up the road and get police to redirect traffic etc. So that could have taken some time.

I also have domains there with UKREG - I will be moving them as soon as the site is up. This is not good enough....

Posted by JenniH, 06-25-2006, 05:29 PM
That may be the case. All the more reason to ensure no single point of failure. But then of course.. that means investment. From here it looks like they elected to grab the short term profit, rather than protect the mugs who create that profit (mere customers). There is only one answer to outfits like this one.... It's a pity because our portfolio of UK hosts is very small already... and getting smaller.

Posted by JenniH, 06-25-2006, 05:47 PM
>> because they've grown very quickly << But they've been around for many years. Compare them to the US major hosts, who tend to have multiple inputs. There is no exuse for this third rate service whatsoever. They knew the risks just as anyone would... but clearly chose to take them, at our expense. I can only assume that they balanced the expense of loss of custom versus cost of dual supply. We are the losers in that equation. If you wish to apologise for them... let me forcast now that you will be a loser again in the future. We will be long gone from this lot.

Posted by dynawebd, 06-25-2006, 05:49 PM
Their cust service and pricing structure seemed a little nutty to me but they have been pretty darn relaible as far as problems -- especially lately. Sux to see they have no effective redundancy tho in this case Folks read their spiel about dual-this and triple-that and rely on it. No bueno IMO. I wonder if their recent takeover by Germans have anything to do with it? http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/05/10/fast_hosts/

I too have quite a few domains there and quite a few are e-commerce sites. Naturally they will be on phone first thing in the morning biting my head and demanding compensation for a days lost revenue. Of couse Fasthosts don't care about that. It would not surprise me if at least one client takes their business away after this catastrophe. Even worse is our mail server is also hosted their catering for around 200 domains. Stupidly we don't have a backup mail server hosted elsewhere. Looks like its time to get that sorted this week.

Posted by dre_, 06-25-2006, 06:27 PM
Atleast blueyonder.co.uk is clever enough to have backup sources. their site is still up, http://www.blueyonder.co.uk/status/s...?ticket=348121

Posted by JenniH, 06-25-2006, 06:37 PM
I suggest you get a grip of market reality Jeff. FH, as they have for years, have offered their packages at £500pa... "UNLIMITED". Please do bother to read their ads.... they are all over the UK paper media. For starters, how about asking the community on this board (WHT) what they think of hosts who offer UNLIMITED ANYTHING? Eh? Go on... ask... NOW... go ahead and read what they promise again. Now place it in the context of the world market.... which includes those who actually do have DUAL inputs and do deliver hosting in the world economy. We are UK based too by the way... but there's no way we will ever allow narrow nationality defend this sort of host offering.

Only the affected areas listed are down for blueyonder. I have had full connectivity on my blueyonder line all day. Pretty amazing that fasthost only uses telewest, I personally never even knew that. Quite sad actually. -Scott

They are back up

Posted by dre_, 06-25-2006, 08:24 PM
yeah my sites are up, but i must of lost like $160 from todays revenue. Worth suing for damages? lol

Posted by JenniH, 06-26-2006, 01:39 AM
Yes... all back up again. I'm still staggered though that such a large host can be unplugged by a guy in the street with a pneumatic drill! It is particularly galling in view of their own advertising comments. We'll start to bail out later this morning...

Posted by movielad, 06-26-2006, 08:54 AM
If it were down to a Telewest connection, then see this: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/06/26/telewest_cable/ Mmm.. M.

The times do not exactly tally do they....

There is a new update, posted at 15:11, on outage on the Registers homepage specifically about the Fasthosts outage. I would post a link but seems I'm not allowed to post links until I've done 5 posts. Silly rule, but I suppose it's to stop spammers who post once and is usually a money making referall link. Fair do's.
