Looking for high storage dedicated server in EU

Posted by CrazyBee, 10-26-2016, 06:01 AM
Hi I am looking for dedicated server with following specs in EU, my budget is around 100-120$ usd/mo. 1. CPU - Intel/AMD quad core 2. RAM - 8 GB minimum 3. DISK - 10 to 12 TB 4. PORT - 100 Mbps un-metered preferred. Other requirements would be standard KVM/IPMI access, Linux O/S etc. Someone previously guided me that I require a raid controller otherwise over system with that much disc would be slow like snail. Please correct me if I am wrong. Big Thanks in advance.

Not a big deal to find deal follow your needs. Do the RAID is needed? 12TB = 4 x 4TB RAID5 If do not need RAID - 3 x 4TB

What is your professional opinion regarding raid setup? Which raid config would you prefer?

Check hetzner: https://www.hetzner.de/gr/hosting/pr...ootserver/sx61

What are you planning to run? Raid10 is always my preference .

I want to store some files (no pirated stuff) on server. Each file varies between 800mb to 1.5 GB I did get some quotes, still looking for more to decided better option.

You can check OVH: https://www.ovh.com/fr/serveurs_dedi...016-FS-12T.xml or Online.net: https://www.online.net/en/dedicated-server#storage They both offer Storage servers within your budget.

Ovh has only one server in range but its ATOM cpu and online.net has quite good deals but most of them are out of stock.

I can see a few of members advised you to check Hetzner and OVH . Hetzner would fit in your budget. This thread will be helpful for you www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=1327255

With that much storage i'd recommend you to go with FreeBSD for its stable ZFS filesystem which beats linux ext4 / xfs when it comes to stability. Linux FS can be silently corrupted hence loss in all data no matter what Raid its built upon while ZFS proved to be very stable Filesystem.

At that budget, for example, 4x 3TB = 12TB the only way you would reach that amount of space would be a RAID 0. However, if a HD fails all your data will be compromised and may be lost. If you increase your budget, you can increase the HDs with a more reliable config like RAID 10. That way if a HD fails, the redundancy will protect your data, and only the one HD would need to be replaced. For your config I would recommend hardware RAID to ensure performance and reliability, which also costs additional.

They do restock quite often or @Op can take a look at Oneprovider - Online.net's reseller too: http://oneprovider.com/dedicated-servers/paris-france

If you go for storage, RAID6 is certainly recommended. I would not go with RAID5 as there's a higher chance on getting data loss if 1 or 2 disks die. Speed on RAID6 is also excellent for file hosting purpose (preferably with ssd caching but your budget might not go that far yet).

Thanks for all the quotes and information. I will follow up very soon.

Have you already found what you looked for?

Are you looking for a backup server with support? If it is not important for you, just choose the server from OVH or Hetzner, they are the cheapest in the market...

I've never used either provider, but with your budget and specs. Hetzner or OVH seem to best fit your requirements.

I have question for you all, how much ram matters for a storage server? I personally feel 8-16 GB ram is more than enough. There was some change to budget and other usage requirements. Now I seek a server as follows: 1. CPU AMD/Intel 2. 8 GB DDR3 ECC RAM 3. 4 TB HDD (with slot capacity to expand to 12-16 TB disk space total later on) - RAID 0 config 4. 100/1000 Mbps unmetered uplink 5. KVM 6. Web panel (restart etc features) Although my budget is slightly reduced due to reasons I can work with AMD Quad core processor, lower ram req. and reduced disk. For those who wish to quote, please ensure the server has expandable hdd slots. Best Regards

Around 80-90$. As I am willing to go with AMD, lower ram and 4TB disk as base config. Main thing I am looking for now is hdd expansion slots for future as required.
