Dedicated, What Do You Think?

I'm currently flirting with the idea of using a dedicated box to host my clients wordpress sites. There would be a maximum of 10 - 15 WP Sites on the server, I'd prefer a fully managed service although I'll settle for simply "managed" if need be. Budget is a max of $300 / Month, although less is preferred and it should be very reliable. EIG Free is a huge plus.
I have ample experience with shared hosting, many years ago. Dedicated servers are new to me and I would like to have some expert opinions on the next steps, any potential hosts which would be a good fit or anything else of educational value. I have no intention of becoming a webhost, simply want to incorporate hosting into my current business model and provide my clients with a WP Option. I currently don't host any sites and most of my clients use website builder platforms such as Squarespace. Although WP has been a topic of interest for several years regarding potential clients.
I assumed a dedicated server would be best as I could divvy up the resources and create containers / packages and be as generous as I wanted with CPU, RAM etc.Are there things I should know prior to jumping in, certain things I should do or additional services I need to get? Can I just get a server and be on my way? I found two potential contenders, futurehosting and Known Host. I specifically like how both seem to offer a combination of service and value and both accept paypal.

You have a sound budget for what you require. You probably don't need a huge server unless these WP sites are real busy.
Take a look at http://www.knownhost.com. They're an excellent managed dedicated server provider.

$300 per month should definitely be enough for a managed dedicated service. What are you hosting those WP sites on currently and what combined resources are they utilizing?

$300 is a damn good budget. What specs are you looking for and what location? Not many customers jump directly to Dedicated Servers, they usually go Reseller Hosting or VPS first.. but those markets are dying and everyone is just moving managed Dedicated or VPS since the prices are dropping on the forefront.

Your budget should get you something that will easily meet your needs for the server.
I will say that paying for a fully managed server is more expensive than either an unmanaged, or even way cheaper, reseller hosting.
If you aren't experienced with dedicated servers, managed is probably better, but it may be overkill.

I've been told that a Xeon based server is what I'm looking for as it's a web hosting type server and was told to avoid the AMD and i7 processors. Ideally 4 - 8 cores to start with 16 - 32gb RAM and SSD drives with up to 240gb storage. Anywhere in California preferred, but anywhere on the west coast is fine. I was initially considering a VPS but I didn't think I could host multiple clients on a single container. When I found out I could fine tune settings on a dedicated, it seemed like a better choice than a VPS besides being able to utilize all resources.

Intel e3 processors would be a good choice as they have a nice CPU speed. VPs's if you go with Xen or KVM you will be able to utilize all RAM to it's full usage but a Dedicated is most likely a better choice. Just make sure you have management equipped with the prpvider in case anything does go wrong along the way; you will avoid those sleepless nights. Also, SSD is that a must? You can use SSD for MYSQL an for the boot but Sata is fine for everything else on the node.

Hi,
I would like to know if you are only going to host 10 to 15 wordpress site on that particular dedicated server. Have you done a resource testing, like what will be required and what you are looking for, because you may end up getting high configuration without seeing if it is needed. You also said something like container, so I guess you are planning to having a virtualization too on this server, is this right?

According to your requirements, I think you can have following configuration in 100 EUR/USD
i7 or E3 ( 8 Cores Including Hyper Threading)
32GB Ram DDR3 or DDR4
240GB SSD
1Gbit Unshared Network Port
20-100 TB Monthly Traffic
I think this is enough for your needs.
I wish you all the best finding.
Cheers
