Whether to go on-premises or hire a private cloud ?
Posted by networth1, 10-30-2016, 01:24 AM |
friends, i have multiple websites and I run on 3 dedicated servers spending like 800$ a month on liquid web for last 3 years.
Now, I have many clients who want to host their websites with me. Roughly I have 200-300 customers friends ready to host their websites with me.
They can pay like 10$ a month.
So, lets say 3000 USD a month, I can make if I start on my own.
So, I was thinking if I go with on premises servers, it will be easily like 15000 USD for 3-4 servers and all licensing like vmware etc to my cloud on premises.
So, is it a good idea to go on premises or whether to simply get a private cloud from OVH like
https://www.ovh.com/us/private-cloud/
What are the drawbacks of remote private cloud ?
BTW, I can host everything on premises as Im running a small NOC in our office which as 24x7 power and cooling backup.

Why do you need 3 servers? How many web sites you are hosting now? What is the load of your server?
Because if these sites do not have high traffic, then you might not need 3 servers.

Right now, 41 websites which hardly gets 10-12GB traffic in 30 days also.
Im aiming to get 200 customers in next 2 months, as I have the customers ready to subscribe to me, but I dont have the setup ready.
I only have the colocation and bandwidth ready and networking part done with 350Mbps of internet transit bought.
So, do you mean, if I want to setup a private cloud on premises using vmware, I dont need 3 servers at the start ?

You should be able to find alternative solutions to private cloud. When you say "on premise," do you mean in an office building somewhere or what do you mean?
You should host your clients websites from a server, or servers, in a redundant data center environment. This will provide your servers with access to reliable power and high-performance bandwidth. I would strongly advise against hosting servers in a non-data center environment for the sake of the websites being hosted. This could turn out badly in many ways.

From scalability point of view, cloud would be a suitable solution for your project. However, please take into consideration that, even though from the resources perspective the cost would be the same or lower, if you will have bandwidth consumer clients at some point your cost may easily go a lot higher then you want it.

yes im a part of 24x7 idc with full power and cooling backup. No issues wirhthat.
We have transit from TATA Communications too for 700Mbps so far now.

Yes, thank you for your suggestion, thats what I thought.
About the bandwidth I already have enough bandwidth lying unused which we will use it here.

BTW, how much upload traffic bandwidth do we need available if we have like 500-600 shared hosting small clients ?

Maybe it goes without saying, but don't use OVH to compare pricing. Search on the forums for the number of people who have posted positive reviews for OVH vs negative. (hint, the ratio approaches infinity).

Upload traffic will vary by combined resource consumption. That's a tough question simply because of all the variables. What you have so far could be fine, and probably will be to start.

Surprising to say, but I've actually had great experiences with OVH, for the past year. I've used them for dedicated servers and VPS machines, with almost no problems. I've seen the horror stories as well, but I just haven't experienced anything that would make me worried about using them.

When there are problems, that is when you find out how good a provider is. Even years of no problems doesn't tell you one way or the other.
