HostDime vs Choopa

Posted by GregCZ, 10-27-2016, 09:18 AM
I'm just curious if there is a possibility to check how fast their datacenters serve the websites from different points all over the world? I'm in EU right now, and Choopa seems to work faster than HostDime. Is it because HostDime is located at Florida while Choopa is in New York so it's closer to EU or what? Please advice. I want to choose between these two providers since they both gave me almost similar quotes. My visitors are primarily from US/Canada, Latin America, India and EU.

In my eyes, the two are very different providers. One is renowned for hosting many questionable sites and the other is well reputed across the board. But a good place to start would be http://www.hostdime.co.uk/facilities/network-tools and http://speedtest.choopa.net/ - you can ping websites or IP's in various places across the world from there.

Thank you for pointing that out, JSCL! Using the Network Tools page you can find ping/speed test IPs to each of our global facilities, including the facility in the UK. You can also use the Looking Glass tool to run more in-depth tests to each of the global networks.

> One is renowned for hosting many questionable sites and the other is well reputed across the board. And which one is which? I've made some test with this tool -- asm.ca.com/en/ping.php -- and it seems that Choopa is 30% faster in Europe if we test pings only.

DimeNOC Marcos This is funny but your 128MB.test file has 122 MBytes in total. Why so?

The New York City area will typically have better connectivity to the EU and lower latency (due to it being closer). If you're looking to serve better data to Europe, Choopa is the right choice.

That is quite a lot of locations that your visitors are originating from. Would you mind letting us know if you are looking to purchase a single server in a single location or multiple servers in different locations? Also, how are you making the comparison that "Choopa seems to work faster than HostDime"? For example, are you loading their website or are you using their looking glasses?

Good question! I just fixed this The Looking Glass script we used to generate the files seems to have rounded oddly.

How do I say this... HostDime are well reputed across the board New York is going to be better for EU, without a doubt, compared to something in Florida.

I don't think you're going to find one provider with the best ping to all of the regions you're targeting as that is quite geographically diversified. Good luck with your search, sir.

Posted by GregCZ, 10-27-2016, 02:03 PM
Did you read the topic's title? I need to understand which one suits my needs better -- Choopa or HostDime. I don't need any "luck with my search", sir.

Posted by SenseiSteve, 10-27-2016, 02:13 PM
Yeah, I read the title, and now rescind my best wishes on your search.

Posted by HostWithLove_Cody, 10-27-2016, 02:16 PM
If it is a single location you are looking for to meet all the geographical locations listed in your opening post, then despite the fact Choopa's NY location may provide better connectivity to some parts of Europe as compared to HostDime's Orlando location (purely due to geographical proximity), HostDime's Orlando location will still be a more balanced location considering you are also needing to serve visitors from Latin America and India.

Posted by GregCZ, 10-27-2016, 05:34 PM
Yes, but asm.ca.com/en/ping.php shows same ping delay in Latin America for both providers while the difference in EU is huge (30%) which is strange.

Maybe you should just reach out to each provider directly and ask them. Tell them your reservations and they can address them better than anyone else here..

Greg, First of all thanks for considering working with us. Sorry but I beg to differ here I see slightly better latency for our network, yes slightly but still see the below screen shots below HostDime IP http://drop.hostdime.com/SAGA Choopa IP http://drop.hostdime.com/twLx I highlighted in red boxes the only LATAM countries with ping on this tool https://asm.ca.com/en/ping.php interestingly it only lists Argentina and Brazil for LATAM countries, there is a lot more then that down there. So not sure how good of a measure this is to bench test all LATAM Wanted to point out too that the tests you may see from your specific office/home location may not be as relevant to the true users. I would challenge for your actual clients to test from countries if you are able to have them test within the country.

We use HostDime for one of our brands exclusively and we cannot be happier. We are utilizing 3 of their locations and we rarely get complaints from our customers about the routing of their networks. Whenever we raise a routing issue to them, they promptly solve it if it's solvable. They go above and beyond to maintain their network availability as well. In your case, HostDime's Orlando location seems like the best of all worlds since they provide great connectivity within the US and Latin America and they are in the East Coast so Europe connection is decent. India should be as good as it gets since it's far far away from the Western Hemisphere. Maybe you can order a second service from their India location for your Indian customers and then load balance. You can of course also use a CDN service for your media files.

Argentina and Brazil are the biggest countries in latam . I'll test that latency you claim. Never seen something below 145 from Buenos Aires (not using level3 servers but home connection)

Choopa has had way many issues lately. We have always wanted to try HostDime, but prices are almost 2x with them.

Posted by MUmair, 10-31-2016, 01:35 AM
I am facing the same dilemma. There are some amazing offers from Choopa based providers (Reliablesite/reliableserver) but HostDime prices are about 2x for the same configuration even with Unmanaged servers. Looks like HostDime only interested in Managed clients. (Their unmanaged prices are about same)

Posted by HumaneHostingOwner, 10-31-2016, 10:31 AM
Cpanel managed clients to be exact. If they would support other panel options then their pricing would be more justifiable.

Posted by HostWithLove_Cody, 10-31-2016, 10:34 AM
For pricing, I would beg to differ. When taking HostDime's $199/month configuration (E3-1230v5, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD) and applying the same configuration on Choopa's website, the pricing works out to $164.95/month, but if you were to add in cPanel and Management with Choopa (which is what HostDime has in their $199/month quotation), it will work out to $244.94/month on Choopa which is in fact more expensive. As a matter of fact, I would say HostDime's prices are very competitive for what they offer. Of course Choopa does offer older generation hardware for a much lower pricing, but that wouldn't be a fair comparison here would it? HostDime does offer additional configurations beyond what is offered on their website. So if you are looking for older generation hardware, are willing to drop management or cPanel from the quotation, etc... by all means contact them and I am sure they will be able to give you a better pricing. Ultimately, do consider the fact that when you lease a server, you are not just paying for the hardware itself, you are also paying for the stability of the datacenter and network. For example you mentioned Choopa has been seeing a lot of issues recently, how many threads have you seen about HostDime having issues from the past few years?

I pick not the one who offers the best ping but the one who has the best rep and then use a CDN, so ping is low for everyone all over the world. The free version of CloudFlare can help with better routeing/pings.

Hi, I'm not complaining at all about HD prices, actually saying "choopa has been having many issues lately", states exactly what you have said, is the same as saying "choopas is having issues, and hostdime dont". About the prices... yeah, never trust on the public prices. i have already talked with both, and the difference is about what i said for what i'm looking for, obviusly i'm talking about my specific needs, wich has 4 big SSD disks, and probably here is where the big difference is.
