Thinking of upgrading to LINUX VPS hosting from shared hosting

Posted by kse709, 08-27-2016, 11:45 AM
Hi all, I been visiting your forum from time to time over the years. Thank you a lot of great information here!! A little about me: I been using shared host for both Windows ASP & Linux PHP hosting for more then 15 years. Currently I have 2 Windows host & 2 Linux host. (I like to have backup hosts) I have around 15 affiliate sites in total with daily visits from 10 - 1000 visits each site depending on the site but on average it is around 150 visitors per site per day. I also use MySQL on a lot of my sites. Over the years Hosting has been my biggest headache. Now for my question: I thinking of getting a LINUX VPS account from interserver.net with 2 slices, 2048MB memory as well as adding on Cpanel. The cost is around $22 a month. I will host around 5 php sites with MySQL with an total of 750 visitors a day shared amongst my 5 sites (on average). What do you think, it this a reliable option? Is this a better option then standard shared hosting?? The fact that I adding Cpanel, do I have extra work to manage this hosting package over what I currently have to do on my shard hosting accounts with Cpanel?? Thank you Kevin….

Of course. Just go for it! You could ask them to help you with your new installation, some hosts will do this for their unmanaged plans. :-) The only big different transitioning from a shared hosting to VPS is having the ability to access SSH so you can install a few things you want like say for example ffmeg and convert some videos which is normally restricted on some shared accounts.

Hey Kevin! Welcome to WHT! Reliable in what way? What are your goals for switching to VPS? You described that hosting is your biggest headache and it shouldn't be that way but what exactly is causing these headaches? Bad support? Bad performance or uptime? Let us know so we can better help you make the right choice. In hosting there isn't really "better" - there's only "better for your needs". For one person VPS makes no sense at all and shared hosting is just right and for another VPS is just what is needed to stop the headaches Yes. Having root cPanel/WHM means you do more management than you did with just a simple shared account. You should check if your VPS is fully-managed or self-managed and consider that as well.

Thank you!! I am always looking for 100% up time or at least very short outages time enough to reboot the server once a month. Over their years I have found some great host but after a few years their outages get longer and support gets worse. I not sure if VPS is for me or not since I just what to spend my time coding my sites and creating content, I do not want to take care of the server software. I have managed Microsoft server in my 9-5 job but I do not want to do it for my own sites. Plus most of my sites are PHP and I know nothing about LINUX and to be honest I do not what learn about it either. What I looking at is self-managed but I was going to pay to have cPanel installed (no idea what WHM means) I was hoping that would mean all I would have to do is code my sites and the server/hosting would take care of itself, I guessing that not the case?? What else would I need to do?? The reason I was thinking VPS was a better option was due to the fact I could have more memory just for my sites and I could reboot the server (VPS) if I needed to. I also did not have to worry about such things as hitting my max “Processes” and “Entry Processes” limits as I have done a few times with one of my shard hosting accounts. Thank you for your reply. Kevin....

Hi Kevin, WHM is the server admin part of cPanel. WHM: Server Admin cPanel: control panel for each domain Once your server is correctly setup it should more or less take care of it's self apart from little administration tasks that have to be done on occasion. If your not confident in looking after a linux server a fully managed plan is recommended. A VPS will allow you configure everything just the way you want to, no different from a dedicated machine. All the best to you finding a great VPS.

Setting up your server with WHM would be the easiest option as you could just download backups from your old shared hosting servers, and restore it to your new VPS server it's really simple! Be sure to choose the right VPS provider!

There's a bit more to it than installing cPanel - you will need to keep everything updated, set up backups, monitor log files, deal with attacks. My tutorial at www.mckerracher.net/vps might be helpful.

With all of these questions, it is clear that you need a managed VPS. Going for self-managed is not recommended especially if these are for production sites. You need to consider the optimization, security, etc.... not an easy task.

Go for Fully Managed VPS with cPanel and Litespeed. That way you may need to increase your budget but you will never have to worry about the hosting.

Thank you all for your great feedback!! I think that if I go with a VPS I may have to look for a "Fully Managed VPS with cPanel" In the short run I just stick with my shared hosting and limit the number of sites per account. Thank you again. Kevin...

Correct Don't go down that road either. Find someone (or a company) outside of the datacenter who's sole responsibility it will be to manage the VPS. It'll cost you a bit more, but you're not going to end up working in 'bulk', like most providers do, and your server will be properly managed (providing you get the proper plan). Server providers (especially VPS and Dedicted providers) deal in bulk customers. They're not going to know (or care) that your server software is out of date, at capacity, sending out spam, has too many connections, etc... That's far too much to deal with, given the fact that they have 1000s of customers, just like you wnting the cheapest deal imaginable. A server admin (or server admin provider) , while still dealing with bulk isn't going to have to deal with half the bulk, has people specifically designated to work with you, and your servers, has scripts designed to let them know if something is wrong (ie: spamming, overutilization, too many connections, etc), and the skills to deal with each and every one of those things. Not so much from the provider.

What would I search for to find a company who provides that service? Or who would you recommend? Thanks Kevin...

Take a look through the related ads and offers section here, just don't go with the 'cheapest' , or those trying to sell you some gimmick. You'll regret it in the longrun. Look for someone offering fully managed, though this will cost a bit more. Avoid the ones that don't have fully managed packages.

I would recommend checking out the VPS offers section. Just look around and find a hosting provider which offers "fully managed cPanel VPS". Once you find a provider you think has what you need, search for reviews online for this provider or even submit a thread in this forum asking for feedback about this provider. And remember: cheaper now is pricey later. Good luck!

Why get a VPS when you can use a web hosting plan with 2048MB RAM? No need to upgrade from web hosting plan to VPS. Simply use a web hosting plan which includes more server resources like CPU, RAM and IO.

That is a great suggestion, however I have never come across a hosting company that stats that information for their shared hosting plans on their website I guess that another question I will have to add to my list when talking to hosting companies. Note: I see that your company does list that information, well done!! Thanks again... Kevin...

Glad to help, Kevin! You're welcome.

Only 2GB memory for a server with cPanel? This is quite low.. i would advice you to upgrade the RAM more

Posted by HostXNow_Chris, 08-31-2016, 08:22 AM
To be technical, 1GB is only needed for cPanel on a VPS, but you get around 1GB-1.5GB actual usage from it. Whereas you would get to use FULL 2GB with a Shared account (for providers who offer such amount on their Shared/Reseller plans, of course), because of memory from the provider powers the cPanel itself IE, in this case, you would get to use more MEM with a Shared cPanel account than you could with a VPS.

Thank you for all the reply's and advice. I have come to the conclusion that VPN is not for me at this time, since I really do not want to manage the server. I was just looking better hosting. After spending a day looking at HostXNow they appear to give me everything I was looking for in a VPN account and I do not need to worry about the back end (that their job) Plus they also have servers located in Canada which is a big plus for me!! I will buy a month to month plan at this point to try them out and see how it goes. So far their support has been great answering all my questions. Thanks again for all the help!! Kevin....
