RamNode 2.5 Years Review (SSD VPS)
Posted by Lautaro, 08-24-2016, 09:46 PM |
Four more months and It will be 3 years since I started using RamNode services.
I initially had two SSD VPS' with them, however a couple of months ago I had to move one with Liquidweb since I was being DDoSed and was already paying for Liquieweb's hardware firewall. So right now I have one VPS with them which I use for personal needs and for hosting some of my client's websites.
Uptime:
I have not noticed any downtime at all (aside from the incident explained below) since my last review 1.5 years ago.
Support:
Their support is very good. You can tell they know what they're doing by the way they reply to your requests, let it be from general billing/services information to actual server management inquiries.
Pricing:
The VPS that I currently have is costing me $89 USD / semi-anually (incl. DDoS filtered IP). I've noticed they changed their plans some time ago and I think my plan in particular is not listed anymore, but seeing the plans they are offering right now I think they are pretty good for the quality service you get.
Performance:
QEMU Virtual CPU version (cpu64-rhel6), 4 cores
1024MB RAM
20GB SSD
(System uptime 212 days, 8 hours, 02 minutes)
On January 3rd they had one of my servers suspended for 4 hours (the one I moved to Liquidweb). The server has a forum in it with almost 2 million posts and 90k users. On that day some company called RiskIQ submitted and abuse report so they suspended my service for 4 hours because there was a thread from 2011 which contained leaked citibank account details which a spambot posted. I know how delicate that information is and I am constantly making sure no spambots make it to the forum, but with such a big forum threads sometime get buried and if none of the users reports it then it stays unnoticed. I would completely agree with the argument that such content should not have gone unnoticed and should have been deleted, however I think RamNode's staff should have checked that the content was from 2011 and that there was no need to suspend a client's server immediately (since the content was so old) without prior notification or just asking to remove the content.
Aside from that little issue I had, everything else has been anything but excellent. I'm happy with their services and will continue to have my current VPS with them for as long as I need it.
I hope this review help anyone who is looking to pay for RamNode's services.

I have to agree RamNode seems like an amazing provider, I have one server with them, and have to admit their network and hardware is pretty unbeatable.
You might need to fix that forum issue, you can use some sort of blocking system to block servers and proxies from accessing the forum, e.g. a lot of botnets use Microsoft Azure to access your forum and post, banning Microsoft Azure's network, would prevent some of this!
Hope that helps!

The bots problems I had were back when using vBulletin. I've been using XenForo for the last 2 years along with StopForumSpam & Tornevall DNSBL databases to deal with bots. Not a problem anymore. That post was just buried from when I was using vBulletin.

Ramnode and their staff are , indeed, amazing.
They were the primary choice for quite a few years, until I outgrew their services. I'll be back there, at some point, I'm sure

To be fair, certain hosts would just act on the report without even checking the content really existed. I don't think any provider should be expected to make their decision based on when the content was posted if it's there and the claim is legitimate. Think about the fact that a dishonest client could put whatever post date they wanted in the forum DB
I've been with them for a while too with the only VPS I've not rebooted myself up constantly for more than a year now

Considering the breached info, I don't completely disagree with suspending the forum temporarily. Thanks for the thorough review and kudos to Ramnode.
