Looking for DIY VPS in Canada
Posted by MichaelNZ, 08-26-2016, 08:01 PM |
I presently deal with Vultr (vultr.com) and have previously with Host Virtual (vr.org) and in both cases I could buy a VPS online, with instant activation and even upload or choose my own ISO. Host Virtual has gone corporate now and Vultr doesn't have a POP in Canada.
So I am looking for an similar service in Canada. There is a few companies offering Canadian VPS but my experience so far is they are lacking in published information (compared to their US counterparts) and stuff which should be straight forward, like installing my own choice of OS, has so far required multiple phone calls and email tag.
Can someone point me in the right direction here?
Again:
1. Install own O/S
2. IPV6 support
3. A DIY control panel to manage stuff myself

So if the canadian companies are lacking with the services that you are looking for ... are you still looking for canadian based provider OR are you open to any other providers that are not based in canada ?

The issue is not so much where the provider is located, but rather where the POP is located.

Have you tried OVH?

Try LunaNode, they have Custom ISO support and provide IPv6 in Toronto.

Try looking at CaratNetworks.com, they may have what you are looking for, also in the Toronto area.

I setup an account and am presently testing. I have noticed their "100 mb test file" is 10x faster then my VPS speed. Hmmm....
(Sorry - I can't use the quote post function due to being a new user)

It's not unusual for some providers to have amazing test files and your actual experience to be different, it's a mix between a dirty trick and likely also a factor of some resource limitations on your VPS.
When you say DIY Control Panel... what exactly are you after in this regard? You mean for general maintenance such as restarts, reloads etc?

The network speed was a bit better yesterday so I am waiting and seeing....
Yes. If I can setup the whole thing from a blank HDD without having to lodge a support ticket that's a good experience in my book. A couple of bugbears for me are providers who charge fees for stuff I should be able to do myself (common in Australia) and limited choice of O/S. Yes, I am well aware most people like Ubuntu and Centos but I'm old skool with my Linux. Just give me a blank HDD and a console screen and I'm good to go.
