What to do with a bunch of unused 512MB boxes?

Posted by cglegion, 08-27-2016, 11:37 AM
I've rented a few small VPSs (50GB disk, 512MB ram, 2 cores) about €2.25/mo and have 9 months to go. I originally bought it for my client's DNS server, acting as primary name server and backup secondary name server. But now that my client has closed down their business and I'm left with these few boxes. What can I do with such small powered machine? Should I just terminate now or end of billing? I have bigger size 128GB pendrive in my pocket than these things...

A few ideas: They would be fine for serving static web pages. You could offer VoIP phone service (e.g. using FreePBX). You could run monitoring services similar to Pingdom on them. You could offer proxy or VPN services. Or keep them as nameservers and offer nameserver backups.

If you do not need it, I don't see any reasons to keep it.

Does your VPS provider has pro-rate refund policy? If yes, you can get the pro-rate refund for the unused period.

You could explain the situation to the provider and ask whether they would be willing to shut them down and give you a partial refund. Some cash back is better than wasting the money. If they won't refund your money, perhaps they would consider cancelling the small VPSs and combining the value into a larger, more useful VPS.

50 GB disk will be good for backups. You can use it to backup your other websites. Or you can also sell them(not sure if WHT allows to sell such boxes). But best option would be to cancel and get a refund from your host.

Sadly, no. In fact, their refund policy sounded like this: "You may receive a refund if you request cancellation within the initial 7 days after sign up of your first service with us." My first invoice total up to £50 per month but my first service was only £2.25 (one of the small VPSs). I've submitted a ticket and the Director replied me personally explaining their terms. I feel cheated but this was actually my fault for not fully understand their terms. Should I know it will end up this way, I will not order everything on a single invoice or at least the most expensive one as my first service. Asking for £2.25 will just make myself look foolish and desprate since they will not refund the balance of £47.25 to me anyway. Maybe I just keep the 7 boxes but not sure what to do with them. combining the value into a larger, more useful VPS. This actually sounds like a good idea! But they don't provide customized package. I already asked their support staff a few days ago... Last edited by cglegion; 08-29-2016 at 09:24 AM. Reason: Spelling error, grammar error (sorry)

Did your client pay you to buy the VPS's? If they did, just cancel them and let them go. No point for the extra work having them around if there's no use for them.

While they may not provide a refund, they might credit your account for the unused portion on cancellation. Many providers will do this. Then you can purchase a larger VM, when needed.

If your provider allows TOR, setup some nodes or if they allow legal torrents seed some of your favorite FOSS operating systems.

Or perhaps do some kind of giveaway with them to promote your brand.

what is the location of those boxes? i would tell you to make it VPN's with the free software or make it DNS nameservers to sell it to people
