VPS server for hosting Minecraft/SAMP

Posted by Pink-Panther, 02-06-2016, 07:46 AM
Hello, i am looking for a VPS server where i can host Minecraft server, small SAMP server and probably one or two websites. What are the most important things that i need to look for when buying a server for these purposes? My budget is limited to $10 per month. EDIT: I found few companies that offer a VPS server for $40 yearly, anyone knows what is this about? Sounds too good to be true, but it would be great deal in case that it is! As far as I know about Minecraft servers, they require quite a bit of RAM (if you want to have more than 2-3 players online), and you want to host that and SAMP and a few sites on a $10/mo VPS? I think you should consider increasing your budget a bit, and you should figure exactly how much RAM/CPU you'd need to run these things.

Thank you so much for your speedy reply. I may give up on SAMP server and host only Minecraft if SAMP server would take too much resources. For the RAM i would need 3GB or 4GB at , and as far as CPU is consirned i need it to have 4 cores. Port speed should also be 1Gbps. How much would VPS with specs above cost me per month?

Minecraft servers will consume quite some RAM. I'm not sure if your 10USD budget is enough per month. Is it really your max? Which providers have you already compared? Do you currently already host a minecraft server?

You will not get a dedicated 1Gbps port, not for that budget.

Within your budget and 3-4Gb RAM requirement, oversell OpenVZ should help you a bit within 5-10 days of usage after then you will get kick out or suddenly slow down.

Minecraft is RAM intensive, and your budget is really too low for anything quality with your RAM requirements. Also take into consideration that Minecraft is single threaded, what this essentially means is that it will perform better under a CPU which has a higher per core clock speed rather than a lower per core clock speed, generally you'd want an Intel E3 processor which offer good per core performance, or a single E5-16**V* would be good as well, but this sort of hardware on VPS is quite expensive to run so you'd be looking more at $10 per 1GB of RAM with SSD drives.

Ok, so can you guys list me a few options? I may increase my budget a bit if i will get a better quality service. What companies would you recommend? EDIT: I may even go with 2GB of ram but i need to be able to upgrade in the future. Also i need to be able to open some ports if needed, so hosting company must allow that. OVH VPS Cloud does the trick for 9$ per month (France or Canada). Latest minecraft goes a very long way with 2GB.

Like everyone said Minecraft is a memory hog. So that is the first questions how many people are you going to have on the server. If its just for you then that spec is fine. If you are planning on having a good number then I would recommend looking in the dedicated server options and get you a base line dedicated server. You would have to bump your budget but will be well worth it in the long term

Server requirements according to the Minecraft Wiki: http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Serve...icated#Console But leave room for the OS (256 - 512 MB for Linux)
