Looking for host with all ports open and enabled to host a website on

Hello, I am trying to set up a videogame server list website, that is a website where users can add their own videogame servers to the list and then players go to my website to pick a videogame server they like. The videogames the website will support are Minecraft, Counter Strike and others. When a server is added, the server list script "pings" the server to check its status (whether its online or offline, how many players are on etc). In order to establish this communication effectively, the server list's host needs to have the port the videogame server is on also open on the host's side. I hope I am using the correct terms for describing what I need, since I am a bit of a noob in creating websites (this is my first website). Feel free to correct me and/or ask additional questions if you need. Also please state how much would it cost per month and per year and what other benefits would be included. Since I did a bit of research and everywhere I looked I saw that shared hosts usually block ports that aren't commonly used, I assumed VPS was my best bet and that is why I am posting in this forum - I don't think I strictly need a VPS host. If this is not a good place to post a request for offers from webhosts, I am sorry and would like to ask forum staff to move this post to a more appropriate place. I was a bit lost regarding what sub-forum would be the best place to post this, I tried asking for help where to post this in the chatbox but nobody was online so . Thanks in advance!

Hi, In shared hosting environment, the hosting company would not open all ports in their server, as it some time cause some kind of issues. If you only need to ping to remote hots, I don't think there should be any restriction for ping. If your website would consume more resources or better performance, I suggest you to go with a VPS. In that way your website could use all resources in your server and there will not be any restrictions as well.

Your best option would be to purchase a managed VPS since you are new to this. Or you want to experiment to test your website's usability and the concept you can start off with a cheap VPS server. With sites that go out and hit other servers on ports other than the standard services ports normally a red flat is thrown on a shared host since it is unusual activity. For a managed host I would recommend Wiredtree, for an unmanaged host I would recommend DigitalOcean. As usual talk with the host first and let them know what you are wanting to do before ordering services. Be sure to create limits on your site that cannot be overridden by users (e.g. users cannot request when checks are done on demand every 3 seconds for example). I am guessing you will possibly want to build gameserver stats, signature generators, etc., just insure that run and cache the requests (best option would be to use messaging and have the server check be a service that runs in the background as a daemon so it can manage when server checks are done and not solely dependent on website interactivity) Take a look at gametracker.com, multiplay's clanforge banners, the old ThePlanet Cortex Insomnia365, archive.org versions of game-monitor.org game banners, and many of the large Minecraft, Battlefield and Call of Duty website stats sites for players and gameservers to get a better feel of some of the technology behind the scenes. Also note that you may be required to write custom code to actually connect and get a response from the servers, as some will drop requests that do not meet a specific protocol or request structure that is not for that type of gameserver.

Thank you anoopv and HelpOps . Yes, all my research so far also points to the fact that for the needs of my server list, only VPS is appropriate since shared hosts have all uncommon ports disabled for security reasons. Thanks for confirming my theory though. Regarding the building my website, since I am very new to making websites and have no coding skill I'm going with a prebuilt script, so while I have no control over how the technology and code running the script works, I should also hopefully not have to deal with any problems. The script has a lot of the standard server list features, like banners, voting etc already built in and it has decent customization options. Thank you for your recommendations HelpOps, but I have two questions regarding them. First, do you know if they have all ports open by default and/or do they let you open all ports? (If they let you open them, can you open multiple ports at once? Given that Minecraft servers can run on ports anywhere between 1024 and 65535, opening all those ports one by one is obviously not an option.) Second, just to confirm, managed means "has a control panel and tools to help you out" while unmanaged means "has virtually no control panel and you have to type in code and stuff"? Or am I wrong? I'm asking because I have virtually no coding or webmaster skills and would prefer a host that gives me easy-to-use tools like a control panel, file manager etc. Basically what I'm asking is whether managed or unmanaged is easier for a just-starting-out website maker with no advanced skills. Also if anybody else wants to make an offer or recommend a hosting service they believe would suit my needs as described in the original post, please feel free to do so. I would like as many options to consider as possible before making a decision. Thanks in advance!

Insure that the application you are using is regularly kept up to date and offers support from the developer. Normally everything will be open by default until you add a firewall to block or allow inbound or outbound traffic. So on your VPS server you should be able to use all ports that are not already in use. Managed means there is someone or a company that takes care of the system administration and security of your server. Unmanaged means everything is up to you to take care of for the system administration and security. In terms of a control panel you can have one or not have one for managed or unmanaged servers. To keep costs low for you and the company some may require a control panel in order for them to offer management services unless you are paying a nice premium for managed services. For you started out I would highly recommend managed with a control panel to make things easier for you and when you are communicating things to support or have a question it will be easier for you and them to be on the same page.

Rare is common to all ports may be open. You must get vps or dedicated server that manages the port with you, not with the host.Of course, the accuracy of virtual servers and dedicated some limited its ports should know before you buy

Make sure you go with a ddos protected host.

Thank you HelpOps, hostuserver and net . I didn't know the exact term, but yes, managed with a control panel describes exactly what I want. By the way, is it not allowed to post direct offers in this sub-forum or has just no webhost seen my post yet? Just checking to know for the future and not get in trouble with the rules.

I did not understand your question Control Panel But if you Virtual Server Admin Control Panel You need to select Control Panel resources at their disposal For example, choose Control Panel: If you require specific facilities and site control panel just for a cheap and light is proposed Directadmin But if you have high CPU and RAM resources such as more than 2 GB of RAM is good cPanel

Thank you guys for all your replies . My question is, to be precise: I am looking for a host that has all ports open so I can host my server list website on it. I would like as many different options and choices as I can get before getting to a final decision.

Hosting providers are not allowed to self promote in these forums and recommendations are only allowed if the person making the recommendation has prior experience with the company. You can look in the VPS hosting offers forum for offers. When you see a company that looks enticing do a search for reviews or come back here and inquire about them. All ports will be open on a VPS by default at the majority of VPS providers.
