Anyone use Vultr (Choopa)?

Posted by ArrowName, 01-25-2016, 02:36 PM
I absolutely love the support and ease of use via control panel that Vultr provides and wanted to know If I am the only one who likes them. Anyone want to share some good history they have with Vultr (AKA Choopa)

What is "Choopa"? I have a couple Vultr VPSs as they're a VPS provider.

https://www.choopa.com/ is the owner of Vultr Holdings LLC

Thanks! So I have a couple VPS like I said with Vultr. One on the west coast and one in NL. They run very well and haven't had any issues with it.

Thanks! Great to know I'm not their only fan

Their hardware/network is quite solid, but their support is like they are from Mars or something... ever since we got accused (multiple times) of sending out spam in October from newly deployed VPSs in November (which was clearly done by the previous tenants)... I said this is definitely NOT the place to run mission critical things, and from 30+ VPSs we've had with Vultr, we now only have one VPS left on their platform. Their only edge vs providers such as DigitalOcean or Linode was the 20% off promotion, but since now that's over... Vultr doesn't even come close to DigitalOcean services.

[QUOTE=Andei;9620341]Their hardware/network is quite solid, but their support is like they are from Mars or something.../QUOTE] I will agree. We have about 25 nodes with Vultr. The product is amazing but their support is awful. We once provided a MTR to their support guy and he responded that "traceroutes are not acceptable" and told me to submit an MTR. Turns out he didn't understand what a MTR or traceroute looked like on linux. Eventually (after 12 hours) we finally got a good engineer who knew what was happening and moved our guest while they resolved the problem with the host node. We haven't dropped a packet in a month.

What a turn off! but at least, your issue is resolved.

No concerns that they run single SSD drives with no raid? (I guess you just need to be aware and plan for backups..)

Their control panel is easy to use and VMs run on fast SSD servers. But I did not think much of their Backup Storage plans as IO/Uplink was not great. I ended up using Hetzner for backup servers. But cannot fault them for their SSD powered VMs for the price although I got the 20% off too. Without the promotion other providers such as DigitalOcean and Linode are just as good if not better. They all have their pros and cons.

Digital Ocean doesn't support custom ISOs though. I like Vultr, but I've never had to use their support.

I had a vps on their AU location probably for a year.. Uptime and performance were good. But, I moved to dediserve(who I feel way better!) when I saw a thread on let stating that one of the web host using vultr was terminated without any response. And unfortunately, the host had all servers including the backup server on vultr!( I dont remember the host name ).

I had their VPS, uptime and performance was excellent, however they are very strict on outgoing emails.

Always plan for failure. Always.

If you can find the thread I would be very interested / curious. I always hear these kinds of horror stories but the threads always seem to have some underlying facts not revealed by the OP. For example.. "They canceled me for no reason! Just because I didn't pay my hosting bill before I went on a three week vacation to the african jungle!". We keep a million dollars of insurance and backup to multiple providers in case of a catastrophic failure. If you're running any kind of IT business then basic liability insurance and lots of backups. should be a given.
