There are different types of semi-dedicated plans, some are basically virtually private servers and others are larger shared hosting plans with 10-20 accounts per server.
VPS is a virtual server, you have root access to allow you to customize it anyway you want.

VPS would be a better solution if you can afford a managed VPS provider and also that you have a little bit more knowledge yourself. If you're new to hosting and just want reliability then I'd go for semidedicated, however VPS will provide you with more flexibility and customizations to your needs.
Cheers

Semi Dedicated servers offered by various hosts are different so there can't be a generic comparison between Semi Dedicated servers and VPS hosting. If the semi dedicated server you are interested in is basically a bigger virtual server, then definitely a semi dedicated server would be better mainly due to limited number of virtual servers created on one physical server.

Agree with Ryan. Hosts customize how they market VPS and Semi Dedicated servers. The choice depends on your application, and which fits best.

I think I understand for my lack of knowledge that a semi dedicated is the best choice.
Thank you all for the answers and valuable contribution..

Semi-dedicated versus VPS tends to be more of marketing language. I would advise that you review the offerings' specifics -- e.g. disk space, memory, etc.
Good luck!

I can add that there is no Semi-dedicated servers, or at least not as a precise term. There are virtual machines that use a full virtualization methods and VPS that are products of OS virtualization... Both work fine... of course it is important what someone wants to use.

It really depends on your budget and your needs. If you don't need a full server or full root access, you may be able to save money with a cheaper solution such as semi dedicated.

It all depends on what you need to do and what your resource usage requirements are and your budget.
If you just want to run a script that's more resource intensive than most regular shared accounts will support Semi-Dedicated could very well be the best option for you as you get more resources without having to manage the server.
If you want root access to the server (to install custom plugins, applications, daemons, etc...) then a VPS is really your only choice between the two but you often have to pay more for it to be managed and they usually start out at around 64mb of memory and go all the way up to several gigs - the more you get the more you will have to pay.
Be careful because there is no standard or organization that manages the naming conventions for the hosting industry so "VPS" and "semi-dedicated" are sometimes used interchangeably.
