Difference? Manged and Dedicated host

Posted by KimberlyH, 08-05-2007, 05:41 PM
Hello, I am not really sure what difference in managed hosting and dedicated server hosting. Is Managed where they fix the problems but dedicated where you are renting a host but you have to fix all the problems? Just trying to understand this as I look for a new host because I want someone to watch the backend of the hosting for me. I just want to design my web sites with frontpage. Thanks Kimberly

dedicated isn't a type of management. dedicated simply means that you are leasing/renting server hardware as well as paying for IPs and bandwidth from the company. With that said, Managed means a lot of things to many different companies. Some companies have several different levels of management. I would contact the company you are interested in and explain exactly what you want from their management. Verify that they offer everything you listed. Find out if it prices extra, and how much.

I think you are comparing shared hosting to dedicated hosting. Shared hosting is managed because the hosting company is the one supporting the server's backend. If you buy your own dedicated server, then you need to support it yourself, or hire a 3rd party server management company. But if you are just a web designer and don't want to do anything except frontpage publish your sites, you may want to go with shared hosting (assuming your sites don't require a dedicated server's resources).

That is my big problem. Is finding companies! I just yesterday figure out to look in data management instead of web hosting for local companies. Thanks

Thanks, I started with shared hosting, then to semi dedicated and I have to have dedicated or my site's traffic crashes the server. Plus I really like not sharing so all the resources are mine and I can check them. Thanks for the reply, I finish my homework and start making phone calls today. ( I hope)

I would suggest going to psm because they offer great managed service. It's stupid how companies try to pull out the extra cash by charging you an extra $100 because its "fully managed" you can just purchase from psm and it would be half that cost.

Thanks, I have platinum server management on my list of people to call this morning. I have been searching reviews on them and I only found a few people who did not like them on all the reviews I found and everyone is going to have someone who doesn't like this. This is just a very scary move for me, I started with my hosting company in 1999 and never considering changing. My home business has become a real legal corporation and moving is like picking a new baby sitter for my child. Thank you Kimberly

You are correct. If it said dedicated server, means unmanaged and if it said managed server, it should be managed by provider. Means they will do hardening/optimization/configuration/monitoring and will do other server administration works.

I'm curious to know who you went for Kimber

Once the sites moved and I have closed my account with my now host I am going to write who I picked and why. Also reasons I did not pick some other companies. Things that happened along the way to turn me off companies. I got a lot of help here and I hope real feedback from someone who spend hours making calls and browsing the web what I learned. Maybe I am wrong, but maybe someone selling a service might find it helpful. I will post on this soon.
