Skynethosting.net review

Posted by HermannJ, 03-25-2009, 10:24 AM
I have been with skynethosting.net for a while and I think its time to share my experiences with them (well once again if I remember correctly). Overall skynethosting is hands down one of the the best host I have worked with since moving from another host that suspended my account for using too much cpu. Service and support: Their service has been top notch specially since they have moved my accounts to Softlayer. Most of my questions have been general questions involved things that I was not sure about such as setting up things, system settings and general questions etc. Every question I have asked them was answered within minutes and every single time. I needed full blown support they went above and beyond what their policies stated they would do. The staff are very friendly and even gave me a few pieces of advice for my site when all I paid for was web hosting. Server Uptime: I have not experienced outages, not anything that I have noticed. I have my company site as well as some clients sites that I have resold hosting and they normally do a very good job of bringing problems to my attention so I feel confident if the site was unreachable I would have known about it, plus my 3rd partly uptime report shows 100% uptime. Problems/Issues: I don't really have any gripes at all, everything has been great. The only things that I recall is that they don't offer a members aria to check my past payments and another problem is that they no longer offer WCS which is a big blow. Final Thoughts: I won't be leaving skynet anytime soon. They have satisfied every need I could throw at them, and in a timely manner. I would recommend skynethosting to anyone looking for either shared hosting or reseller hosting accounts. Oh by the way if you were wondering about my site you can checkout my signature.

Nice review, thank you for taking the time to write it. I do have a piece of advice on your site and that is to make it expand to the size of the browser, it looks a bit silly imho at 1600x1200. Here's a screenshot: http://www.screen-shot.net/ss/94244326162833577232.png

Skynethosting, it's really hard to beat their price and I had a great experience when trying to order. But we're experiencing a fairly serious problem right now with cpanel, login, etc... and the support is frankly not that different from the usual call center (BS) routine you encounter. You get asked questions to things which they already know (e.g. IP address of the server when they already have the domain name and can easily ping it). They close tickets without confirming that the problem really is fixed and then you have to go through the whole update ticket routine again... sigh... I'm sure they will eventually get around to fixing the problem after a few days but this is not what you'd call great support. Something also happened to our account and data in there was rolled back to a few days ago. They probably moved servers without the proper precautions or were just sloppy about it. A couple of their nameservers were also down intermittently for a few days though the situation with the nameservers seems to have stabilized for now. It is bargain-basement hosting (cost-wise) after all so the mediocrity is not surprising... but I can't help but feel everyone's time (including theirs) would be served more efficiently if they serviced the tickets with more attention. I also just realized that rolling back the data may not have been a big deal in our case, but if this were a high traffic site where the data constantly changes, the above would have been totally unacceptable.

Hello kmching2, Thanks for the review. Would you like to let me know the ID's of the tickets that you are not satisfied with or still having problems with? I would like to check these tickets in detail for you. I look forward to your reply. Regards, Steve

The ticket numbers involved are SWB-720720 and YVC-224846. The problem seems to be resolved as far as I can see as we can log on to ftp and directories are now showing (we'll know for sure once we try to upload files). If I was not having a bad day at that time, I'm sure I would have shown far more patience, but I think the point stands... if the domain was already given, I'm not sure why the ticket handler is still asking for the server IP, and the ticket was closed apparently without verifying first-hand via FTP login if the issue was resolved. Also, no attempt was made to explain why the latest website contents were no longer there and was rolled back to several days ago. I'm guessing something happened that required a restore from backup. The site involved is a rather simple one so it is easy for us to just reupload our most recent updates. But like I said, what happened would have been a minor disaster if it were a major, high-traffic site with site contents being constantly updated. There also seemed to be intermittent outages of NS1.SKYNETSERVER23.COM and NS2.SKYNETSERVER23.COM sometime in the last week or two. I don't have the exact nor complete dates and times when it was down and was only able to confirm on the very last incident (sometime around 4/22 or 4/24) that the reason our site was not showing was because the domain wouldn't resolve. A ping of the nameservers from different geolocations did not result in replies. The outage only lasted a few minutes as far as I checked, but I do believe most people would agree that both main *and* backup nameservers going offline unannounced even for a few minutes are not a light matter, especially if such outages happen intermittently. Now that I think of it, it could have been routing issues wrt to your datacenter rather than the nameservers themselves.

Hello kmching2, Thank you very much for taking your time to respond. Let me answer your concerns one by one. Good to hear that your issues have already being resolved Sorry if you were having a bad day at that time, we appreciate your honest review which would bring out the issues to the management level and help us to improve the level of service that we provide. The downtime you have experienced is during the IP migration from old server to the new server. Let me explain what we did. Your server Luna was maintaining an excellent uptime orver the last 2 years without any problems. However for the last 2-3 weeks your server Luna had some minor and major problems, resulting in the named, apache servers to crash and experience some downtimes on different occasions. We have noted the degraded performance and considering its serving time (2 years), our admin's were planning for a scheduled server upgrade, however the server showed hardware problem before scheduled date, thus we had to call an emergency server upgrade in order to prevent prolonged downtimes. The new server from Dell arrived within 12 hours and we had to move your live server to same rack as the new server for a faster transfer. We were able to physically move your live server to the new location right next the new server with only 10-15 minutes downtime. Then we have migrated the data using a private network. Once migration was completed there was another downtime lasting 10-15 minutes to migrate the old server IP's to the new one. However we must admit that there were number of clients having prolonged downtimes, database errors due to migration problems, in other words their data was not properly transferred to the new server, which we have re-migrated and corrected the problems. Once the Migration was completed, we have reset the monitoring to reflect the new server, which you can access at: http://www.ndx2.com/uptime/ Once the migration was completed and the migration issues were resolved there have been no downtime or problems. I have checked your tickets in detail and I see the following conversations were made (I've list them hear in bref). I see that the mistake was made from my end, such mistake from myself is very rare but I have done it and I apologize and make sure such not repeat in the future. During the migration, which involved over 600 resellers/clients, our help desk was overloaded with tickets. The support staff had only short time to attend every issue, so that the quality and the response times may have degraded during the migration. SkyNet.Jason (Update3) - Problem Fixed. SkyNet.Dylan (Update2) - Thanks for FTP Details + We are working on it You (Update3) - FTP Details Provided SkyNet.Steve (Update1) - Request FTP Details You (Update2): cPanel Working + FTP Still not working + FTP Details Provided You (Update1): cPanel Not + FTP not working I hope I have explained, and everything's now clear. Thanks for explaining most of the issues. There was no explanation given for why the data got rolled back though. My guess was that the account had to be restored from backup which did not reflect our most recent changes.

I'm glad that I had a change to explain it to you. In case if the support haven't provided you in the first place here's the link to the long 9 page migration thread. http://skynethostingtalk.com/viewtopic.php?t=1359&start=80

Hello; Are you still with skynet after 4 years? Can you write an updated review please ? Thanks

Posted by strugar, 07-11-2013, 06:08 AM
I believe the answer is negative: And if you check site in his signature, you'll see it doesn't exist, it expired and was not renewed.

I think this hosting provider does not use SSL on their site. It is very strange

In life there are different ... I chose the skynethosting.net and three years later I promise to write a review I find no problems now.

Posted by SkyNetHosting, 07-17-2013, 02:30 AM
I don't see any reason to use SSL by default, the site only redirect to secured url's only when its necessary.

Thank you! We truly appreciate your business.

I moved to Skynet recently - not long enough to give a definitive review but one will be forthcoming in three months. ;-) As for now - no issues with anything.
