WHMCS as a "standalone portal"?
Posted by GeckoD, 08-07-2013, 10:23 AM |
Hey folks,
Please excuse the newbie questions... I'm new to this and trying the get the minimum structure in place so that someone can buy hosting (and preferably a domain) from me.
I have installed WHMCS. Now what?
Hostgator's tutorial says the next step is something like "now you can upload your website". (??) What website is that exactly, and where is it to be uploaded? And whose website is it? Mine? Or... (I'm a bit tired of their support after a 1.5 hours chat so I'm asking here hopefully I can make myself understood better...)
Can WHMCS, the "all-in-one client management, billing & support solution for online businesses", actually allow people to buy hosting? If yes, well I can't find that option anywhere... I get the feeling that I have to create a web page or something that people can click, and integrate that page with WHMCS, but... it's supposed to be "all in one, handling everything from signup to termination", does that mean "everything but the site where people can actually buy"?
What do I have to do next? I want to use all the defaults to just display a page where people can choose a package.
I can't help feeling that I'm missing something very basic here... can you pinpoint what that is, based on my questions above?
Thank you!

WHMCS is a standalone portal. Go to the administration area, log in and you can configure everything from there. If you need help add 'peter.craig.uk' on Skype.

GeckoD, the easiest method is to setup WHMcs in its own sub-directory (billing, clients, etc.). This gives you a lot of flexibility, for example if you want WHMcs to be your website at first - redirect requests to the WHMcs install folder. If at a later date you would like to build a website (looks a lot better to potential customers) you can remove the redirect, clients would then reach WHMcs via links in your website.
WHMcs is a standalone platform out of the box, however it's best not to use the "default" template. The portal template accommodates a stand alone install better because it includes an "order" link by default and is just easier to navigate when used without an external site.

Well you can edit the default theme, just make a folder for example, layout and copy the tpl's files from the default folder to your new one.
Then edit the header.tpl / footer.tpl with your website's code.
Then go to your site: urdomain.com/?systpl=layout and you can see what it looks like.
Please be aware that you will have to edit the bootstrap css in the Whmcs.css file.
Also you can pay someone to do it for you like WHMCSThemes, they can integrate it for you.

Did you view the documentation? http://docs.whmcs.com/Main_Page

Thank you all for replying... I got it to work almost perfectly with the default theme, which is what I was looking for. I'll need to work on it just a bit more and it's done. Great forum, thanks again!

Just a bit of advise: If you're using the default WHMCS theme as your main website and nothing else, that leads potential customers in the opposite direction.

Its very easy to configue and set up whmcs to your needs and wants. WhMcs overall is a great solution and wonderful software. You can keep the stock original skin or theme on whmcs but you may still want to make little changes here and there forexample logo , banners text or and even links.
There are even some nice whmcs themes you may purchase online at a wonderful price. There are also designers that could create you a skin. They also even have custom premade templated at sites like whmcsthemes.com
Some are quite pricy but it pays off to have your site looking unique
