Common not to offer pro-rated refund?

Posted by NerdsHosted, 03-12-2013, 11:33 AM
I was thinking of joining StableHost. I wanted to pre-pay for a year or two, but if I decide to cancel after 45 days they don't offer pro-rated refunds. For instance. Say I pre-paid for 1 year, and I decide to cancel after 7 months, I would not get a refund for my remaining 5 months. They just keep my money. I almost feel like I'm stuck in a contract then. Is this common for reseller hosting plans to do this? Does anyone know of a reseller plan that DOES offer pro-rated refunds if you decide to cancel half way through your year pre-payment, etc? I guess it doesn't seem right to me to just keep the persons money, because what if the service goes really downhill after just 3 months? However, if this is the "norm" then I guess I'm wrong! Thanks.

Most of the hosts do not offers pro-rated refunds and this not unusual at all. If you are unsure about the stability of a host then better to sign a month-to-month contact with them instead of paying for whole year.

Okay, just checking. Thanks for the fast response! I guess I'm comfortable doing a year with a well known host. However, I don't think I would ever pre-pay more than a year because who knows what my hosting demands are going to be like after that. I may not need hosting, may need more, etc.

You get a discount for a year, so no. Monthly payment is there to try them out, or if you're scared, unable to pay, etc Note: Stablehost is a great host!

I would always recommend reading the hosting providers terms and conditions but the vast majority will not offer pro-rata refunds. I would suggest going with a smaller host and raise this in your pre-sales question - i want to sign up to an annual package but if i decide to cancel 5-6 months in would you give me a pro-rata refund? There is no harm in asking the question. Some hosts may offer you a refund in credit for you to then use on other products / accounts.

This is why you should never sign-up for yearly services unless they offer pro-rated refunds. I've seen this subject debated many times here on WHT, but the reality is, web hosts who do not offer prorated refunds are simply taking advantage of the market (hence why you often times see many web hosts pushing yearly plans, as opposed to monthly).

It is not unusual on annual contracts. Many do offer monthly billing at a higher rate. Check into those.

I agree, love them! However I was surprised that they seem to only have 2 reseller servers, I thought they might have more servers for reseller accounts. Seems to be a lot of companies who provide reseller hosting have less than a handful of servers. Just a point of note

I couldn't have said it better myself.
