Multiple Reseller Accounts and Custom Name Servers
Posted by redactuk, 03-07-2013, 12:49 PM |
Hi folks
I run a small web design business and also offer hosting to my clients via a reseller hosting provider - Reseller A. I've decided to keep Reseller A setup but also open a 2nd reseller account with Reseller B (as Reseller A does not provide everything I need). Both reseller accounts use WHM, but of course I don't have full access to all options in WHM as I'm sub-account on a shared server. I currently use WHMCS for client management.
I also use branded name server options provided by Reseller A - so ns1.mydomain.com and ns2.mydomain.com. I'm guessing these vanity name servers are just mapped to name servers provided by Reseller A, and therefore used by other reseller also.
My question is, what are my name server options when I open account with Reseller B? I've been reading up about DNS clustering, but I'm guessing I can't use that as both reseller accounts are sub-accounts?
Ideally I want to create a new hosting account for a client via WHMCS and then decide which server they are allocated to, and then register a domain name for them using my custom name servers. But I'm just not sure what I need to do to achieve this.
Any advice appreciated!
Thanks

The most common way this is done is:
ns1.yourdomain.com & ns2.yourdomain.com ---> Reseller A
ns3.yourdomain.com & ns4.yourdomain.com ---> Reseller B
This setup should work perfectly without any issues.
Add the servers in WHMCS and you can use WHMCS to register domain names as well, while registering a domain name you can directly set the nameservers that domain should be assigned.

Thanks for the reply, although unsure about practical steps:
So when I open Reseller B account and they ask me if I want to use custom name servers, I give them ns3.mydomain.com and ns4.mydomain.com? and I then edit ns3/4 A records for the mydomain.com to point to IP addresses Reseller B gives me corresponding to their name servers?
Assuming I've not got that totally wrong, if a domain is hosted on Reseller B, when domain is resolved it will fail to find anything against ns1 and ns2 and then look to ns3 and ns4?
Note: I'm a little confused also, as I thought specifying multiple nameservers was for redundancy rather than for using each for different sets of domains

Accounts hosted on Reseller B should not use the ns1 & ns2 ns records. If the ns1 & ns2 values were used this would result in failures. As long as you set the ns values within WHMcs for each "server", these should be set correctly if a domain is registered with an order. Your welcome emails should also automatically include the correct values as long as you've used the appropriate tags.

Ok that bit is clear now, thank you.
One final question related to this:
Based on my setup described above, is it recommended I still make use of the pairs of name server IPs provided by each Reseller (using my domain)? or is there any merit (or even possible) to use some external name servers service that I could use for both resellers and is scalable for any future additional servers?
PS I'm guessing in practice if I outgrow both current Reseller servers then next step would be dedicated server and use of DNS clustering?

You can use ns1 and ns2 for multiple servers (if that is what you want) by using DNS clustering.
You can setup ns1 on dns only vps in say uk location and ns2 on dns only vps in say usa location and then setup dns clustering on those vps to interact with the reseller servers. Sounds like that is what OP wants to do...

So does anyone recommend any companies that can provide a cheap and reliable dns only vps setup with server locations in BOTH uk and us? i.e. one company

You can purchase a VPS in US and a VPS in UK then set up cluster dns with cpanel dns free service.
Hosting providers with cluster dns usually have their dns servers hosted in different data centers / cities but rare to find in different continents.

Some providers offer clustered DNS as standard with their hosting which then you can simply get private name server's assigned to you.

One further question on this:
Reseller B has assigned me custom name servers:
ns1.newdomain.com > IP address 1
ns2.newdomain.com > IP address 2
Can I just ignore those and create ns3/4 A records on mydomain.com as:
ns3.mydomain.com > IP address 1
ns4.mydomain.com > IP address 2
or do I need to inform Reseller B and ask them to change my reseller account record to use mydomain.com?
I'm presuming a name server account does not care what domain was used to point to it?

What is a nameserver account? Do you mean registrar? I think you may have your hosting terms mixed up.. it's best to learn what the correct terms are for future reference because you don't want to confuse your clients when asked to explain something.
You can do this in your registrar if this is what you mean
ns1.yourdomain.com -> First nameserver IP of Reseller Host 1
ns2.yourdomain.com -> Second nameserver IP of Reseller Host 1
ns3.yourdomain.com -> First nameserver IP of Reseller Host 2
ns4.yourdomain.com -> Second nameserver IP of Reseller Host 2
You don't have to go in order of ns1 ns2 ns3 ns4, you can even do ns92.yourdomain.com and ns93.yourdomain.com if you want

I mean creating ns3 and ns4 subdomains on mydomain.com to point to primary and secondary name server IP addresses for Reseller B

By name server account I mean the WHM setup on the IP address that has been designated a name server i.e. DNS database.
I understand that bit, my question relates to whether I can disregard the fact that Reseller B has specified I use:
ns1.newdomain.com > IP address 1
ns2.newdomain.com > IP address 2
i.e. those values in the local DNS records on the Reseller B account.
Presumably as any domains I'm registering to be hosted on that server with name server entries
ns3.mydomain.com > IP address 1
ns4.mydomain.com > IP address 2
resolve to the same IP addresses it doesnt' matter?

To alter the default dns servers used by your reseller account login to WHM and click "Basic cPanel & WHM Setup". This will give you the option of changing these to ns3 & ns4.

That's great idea if you can buy reseller hosting plans from same company, but ask them for multiple locations.
They can help you setup all nameservers easily!
