Anybody can help me with file permissions for a small HTML only site please

I was wondering if I could break something if I set up folder/file permissions at 744 for a whole HTML site. Filezilla checkboxes indicate that 744 means that only the owner is able to read, write and execute. The group and public will be able to read and nothing else. Basically the question is this, can I break anything if I set permissions at 744 for an HTML site? I am asking this question because all hosts I have been with set folder permissions at 755 by default, meaning that group and public can execute files and I don't understand why my visitors would need execution rights for anything, I want to take that away.

Yes and No because that really depends on the web servers and configurations the host is using.

This If the server is using suPHP/suExec then you'll want 755 for folders and 644 for files. If you're not using suPHP/suExec then you'll want 755 for folders and 664 for files (and 777 on folders that need written to) (or most of the time it does not even matter in a default environment). Again, it all depends on the server configuration.
