Reseller account that allows "selling" free hosting
Posted by Searching_Reseller, 10-12-2011, 12:39 PM |
Hello all,
I am interested into starting some kind of 'business' starting with a reseller account somewhere around 20-30$ / month.
Basically the first step will be to offer FREE hosting services ( on subdomains or bought domains - no profit for me) in order to get known around the web. This will probably take at least 6 months. I don't know what will happen next, maybe I will start selling some small packages, or just living from donations.
I contacted Mr. Giles ( CEO of eleven2) and he was very nice to answer and advise me that FREE content is not allowed on his hosting reseller package, but only on cloud servers.
I am wondering if you can recommend me any webhosting that will allow reseller account that is 'selling' free content.
Thank you.

Most resellers won't allow you to give out free accounts. It's a magnet for abuse.
You could always check out http://myownfreehost.net/

Many reseller providers won't allow you to offer free hosting off there servers or accounts. Always be sure to check ToS. They usually don't allow this because people tend to abuse the service.

Interesting. I have never seen this in any TOS or AUP.

You'll get known allright....as a dumping ground for bottomfeeders, scriptkiddies, warez linkers.
And once you get a rep like that there's no way back.
Get yourself a sensible business plan!

Please don't judge me too hard. 'Business' for me means to do something that I like, offering a chance to people that never had this chance. I don't plan to get rich from this, just to find some 'sponsors' and keep it free.
I am a software developer and I will try to figure out how to keep an eye over the accounts content. Maybe a daily scan, maybe there is software already available, maybe human checking.
But I don't want to give up the idea yet.

That's a hobby, not a business.

In theory that's a nice principle to have....but the reality is you'll end up with trouble at your door.
If you're going to do something like that then do it for charities or voluntary groups or community projects etc.
Not for the great unwashed who unfortunately will throw your generosity back in your face and end up getting you suspended by your host.

I have to disagree.
Even charities, volunteer groups and community projects have budgets to operate from.

I haven't come across too many paid reseller programs that don't allow free accounts. They generally see it as you can set costs to whatever you choose to the space that you are paying for.
I agree with the others that free hosting is likely to be a bad idea to start a reputable hosting operation. I would be interested to see how well something could work out as a domainshare.tk partner with advertisement overlays and/or viglink monetizing for all of the domains.

Free hosting, seriously bad news IMO.
However, has many uses.
Can be a great lead generator tbh, as long as you keep the free and paid services completely apart.

You're really better off going for a VPS. Even if a host is not outright banning you from offering free hosting, there is only so much abuse they will put up with from your end users. Eventually, they will hold you responsible for their actions, and when they do, it won't be pretty.

If you don't know what will happen next, then I'd suggest you not to give "free" hosting service. My friend did this few years ago, and he got nothing but server/service abuse and it didn't help much to boost his "paid" service selling.
Well, it's your choice and decision, but keep on mind that many will only use and abuse your "free" service for fun.

I am still waiting for another offers.
Thank you for all the other advices, I will be aware of the risks and if I will fail I will give you all right. All I want is to make a try...

I'm sure you mean recommendations and not offers, because offers are not allowed here on WHT, publicly or privately.
