JBOD with SSD drives

I want to setup a storage server with SSD drives for performance. However, I want to have a large storage on a limited budget. I am planning to use multiple SSDs of 1 TB each with JBOD so that I can have a large storage. My question is that is it reliable to use JBOD for storage or I should go for raid? The I/O is very important for me especially the write speed. Advice needed.

I feel that it is no difference from a single drive if you are using JBOD, no protection against hardware failure or having redundancies.

You can attach a JBOD enclosure and put it onto a raid card. So, you're partially right. Why do you need so much SSD performance? I personally run all hybrid setups and I have plenty of IOPS for some fairly demanding applications.

For a storage server SSD seems like it'll be quite a hefty, unnecessary cost. You could quite easily setup standard HDDs in RAID and get fairly decent performance for a lower cost.
