How to generate a backup

Posted by RHostingMX, 01-14-2010, 12:07 PM
Hi there my dear friends of WHT Well I'm going to switch of hosting provider, so I have a doubt about how to start to transfer the domain data from the actual hosting service to the new one, so I need to transfer the web design (public_html folder) and the email data (mail folder: account+inbox+sent), so here are my thoughts: 1. I don't have ROOT access to my actual hosting service so I don't have the option for backup/recover for email. 2. Can I just copy/recover the PUBLIC_HTML folder and then just copy to the right account and in the same place. 3. After recreate all the email accounts for each domain, Can I just copy/recover the MAIL folder and then just copy to the right account and in the same place. I have this crazy idea and I don't know if this can work, there is another alternative?, So I really appreciate all your information and support, your recommendation and your advice. Thanks in advance. Rodrigo Castillo ROC@S MEXICO

How many domains are you moving? Have you spoken to your new provider to see if they will restore a full site backup for you? The easiest way if for you to do a full site backup in Cpanel and then ftp that to your site so the new provider can restore that full site back up for you, just an idea.

Hello, please tell me your source destination controlpanel and OS details. Better contact your host for help or hire a server admin help.

I'm moving 40+ domains, but my new hosting provider only can take 10 for free, so I'm low budget now so I need to do it by my self. I don't have ROOT access so I don't have the 'Backup' option under my WHM panel, I just can get access to the CPanel Backup option. So I like to know if I can take the 'Full Backup' option from the CPanel of each account, to backup/recover the email accounts and data (sent + recieved messages) to then transfer to the new hosting provider. This is my actual Hosting Provider WHM Accelerated 2 cPanel 11.25.0-R42400 - WHM 11.25.0 - X 3.9 CENTOS 5.4 x86_64 standard on server11 This is my new Hosting Provider WHM Accelerated cPanel 11.24.5-S38506 - WHM 11.24.2 - X 3.9 CENTOS 5.4 i686 standard on dnode3 Thanks in advance.

Yes, you can do a full backup for every cPanel account you have. Then just upload this tar.gz backup files into your new account. Then tell your new host to do a restore of these files, they should be able to do it for you. It will backup/restore everything. Mails, websites, databases, configuration settings, even your log files. Everything.

Yes, unless you have "Root Access" it's the only way to go about it.

Rodrigo, Your new host offers 10 accounts moved for free and charge for the remainder. Ask them if they will charge you to to perform restore on 40 accounts if you move the backups. Create a large dummy account in your new WHM - example restore.com. Generate full backups on each old account using remote FTP option. Point to new WHM IP and the restore.com username/password. This will dump all of the full backups onto the new server where the new host can run restore on each then assign ownership to your reseller.

Glad we could help. All the best with your new host.

If you use your cpanel to back-up and restore your website to your new host, I can think of two things that may go wrong. The data base will not work because the restore back-up will not create the user and password of each data base on each website and you may not be able to send out e-mails on all accounts, but you can receive e-mails. You just may consider these.

Hello What is left to do then rodrigg? What is the best way to back up and migrate accounts? Thanks

If you have "Root Access" you can also use this method http://forums.cpanel.net/f5/best-way...tml#post173956.

Thanks Xostxnow But isn't there something automated to do this? What if you have 100 accounts?

Posted by HostXNow_Chris, 01-15-2010, 10:05 PM
If all 100 accounts are on a reseller account you can do this in WHM at Main >> Transfers >> Copy multiple accounts/packages from another server Or Copy an account from another server with account password

Thank you guys, One more question. What if I want to make my own back ups offsite. What method would you recommend? Thank you

Posted by harrysmith31, 01-17-2010, 07:42 AM
Well, you can order offsite backup package and can just upload all webdata using FTP. There are many hosting service provider who can offer you OFFSITE backup package. You can ask your webhost to offer offsite backup as a complementary gift
