As such I don't see any harm. If you update then you will get more bug fixes and other better features also to use. The only thing you need to be careful is to ensure that you have taken an appropriate back up before you update because if at all anything goes wrong(chances are less) and damages your data, you can have a backup to restore and continue your work without any loss.

Hello, Upgrading to 5.5 shouldn't hurt a thing, it should only help. I recommend taking a dump of your databases before running the auto upgrade. The command to do this is below , assuming you are comfortable with the shell. --------------------------------------------------------------- mysqldump --all-databases > /root/all_db_backup.sql ---------------------------------------------------------------

Upgrading to a newer version is always best to keep up with. Make sure you have backups available before doing anything first just in case they are needed.

I could see the VB is compatible with mysql 5.5 versions. Only thing we needs to make sure that a error free upgrade. You can refer http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.5/...us-series.html to understand the basic changes. Issues comes mainly when we skips a major version in our upgrade.

As far I know MySQL 5.5 is better than MySQL 5.1. vBulletin and other third party scripts should work with MySQL 5.5 without any trouble. Before you upgrade MySQL version, make sure that you secure the full backup. Since you are using cPanel, upgrade MySQL from WHM -> MySQL upgrade. Make sure you read the steps completely during upgrade.

if you are really worried for upgrading MySQL just make a dump of all the databases and you can always roll-back to the previous MySQL version if something goes really wrong. You can take some time first to read the MySQL changelog between versions.
