Banning Ips

Posted by imbilly, 09-19-2013, 09:34 AM
Hey, I've set things up on my VPS so that I get an email whenever someone tries to log in too many times and fails. The email comes with a few links I can follow to block the ips that end in: 222.52.118.214 (for blocking an individual ip) 222.52.118.0/24 222.52.0.0/16 I'm guessing the last two block multiple ips, but beyond that I'm not really sure what they mean, what the consequences would be, or which choice I should make. I'd appreciate any clarification or suggestions you can offer. Thanks, Billy

I would recommend to just block it individually because blocking by range can block potential customers. If this is what you are asking?

Hey Net, That's part of it. Will either of the multiple options block a large number of addresses or are we just talking about a few? Thanks, Billy

I would recommend you to use firewall in your VPS like CSF which will automatically send you an email once there is a root access to the server also it will automatically block IP address if there is multiple failed login attempts comes from same IP address.

The /24 will block 256 IP's. The /16 will block 65536 IP's. In some cases I will block a /24 if there are multiple requests coming from multiple IP's in the range. Rarely would I do more than that, simply because the IP's aren't necessarily all from the same provider/bad use.

Hey Best, I think that's what I'm doing, the email the system is generating includes those choices. Hey Serve, Thanks for explaining that, I think the /16 seems a little excessive too. Thanks everyone, I appreciate your help. I feel like I've got a little better handle on things now. Billy

Yes 65K IPs being blocked is pretty bold. if you have leads that a /24 class is attacking / abusing you can can block it will not hurt.
