Wipe Root Disk on Live System

Posted by HostGo, 09-19-2013, 05:00 PM
I am turning in a dedicated Linux server that I want to wipe the disk on before I turn it down. Unfortunately I don't trust the provider will wipe it so I want to do this myself. I don't have access to a remote console or IPMI. I also don't have a lot of time so I was wondering if I do the following command on the root disk on a live system if it will actually complete since it in essence is destroying the OS disk? Thanks, Eric

I am not that tech oriented, however, based off of this article it looks like you're on the right path.

Yes, I've done this on systems where the disk being wiped is not the root disk. I guess my question is will this command complete on a live system since I am pretty much killing the OS partition on the server? Eric Last edited by HostGo; 09-19-2013 at 05:20 PM. Reason: typo

Before giving them your intentions to leave can you not randomly ask for a reinstall?

This is a good idea. This will make sure that you data have been removed.

Turning it in today so not sure if they will or not. Eric
