Need advice

Hi everyone, I have 5 fansites. I think together they used around 25 gb so far and 500 gb bandwidth each month. I might open 2 or 3 more fansites in the future. Do you think Reseller Web Hosting is good for it? And does someone know any good resell web hosting with SSH acces, backups and support?

Well it is very easy for me to make a suggestion that you shall move to VPs or dedicated server, but this will inflict some management prices to you. At the same time you will need more resources and most of them guaranteed. YOu can probably stay in a Reseller Hosting account for a quite some time. if you need suggestions go to appropriate section in "Find A Host" menu or search in the appropriate forums for customer reviews.

I just found scalahosting.com One of their plans they offer 40GB space, 400GB bandwidth and free support, backup and SSH. Should I try? I don't know much about resell. Is this what the offer also overselling or not?

25gb space? and 400b bandwdith? and I'd also recommend you move to a VPS. It'll give you sense of stability because VPS providers are less likely to oversell and even though a Reseller can give you 500gb of bandwidth, it won't be cheap. and about the scala host offer, how much does it cost? you have to look at how much they charge and what their servers can actually hold.

How are you currently hosting these sites? On separate accounts?

You should really move up onto a VPS it gives you more privileges and secures your sites more. Go with a MANAGED VPS.

For the bandwidth requirements, I'd also take at VPS offerings. They would probably be comparable in pricing compared to a reseller plan of that magnitude anyway.

A VPS would have to be managed to be really comparable with a reseller account. Couple with the control panel licensing prices, this makes entry level (~$50) VPSes not all that competitive for reseller hosting purposes. Then there's also the issue of a VPS being effectively a lower powered computer, which can have some effect on performance.

I guess it really depends on what he needs/wants. To me there really is no comparison for the dedicated resources from a Xen VM and the isolation from other users. But from a budget standpoint I can see how that would be an issue.

They are currently hosted at another fansite hosting on a server. It's not mine. The one I mentioned at scalahosting cost $34.95 per month.

Can someone tell me what's the diffrences between reseller and vps? Thanks

resellers are generally cheaper because it's basically shared hosting that you can resell. Most of the server technical stuff is handled by the owners of the server. A VPS is like a dedicated server, you have to know a bit more about how to install softwares and configure the server and secure it. You have a LOT more control but it's more expensive and generally weaker than shared hosting in terms of the physical resources you get. you can be limited by CPU or RAM where in shared host, you have the entire server's CPU and RAM (with limitations of course) - with a VPS you also have to worry about a control panel such as cpanel or direct admin - you have to own the license (about $15 on average for cpanel/whm) there are many other differences, but these are just some from the top of my head

I don't have much experience with servers. The most thing I worry about is if my fansites get hacked. I don't really mind if I'm a shared hosting. As long as it works fine and there are now downtimes. So reseller won't be bad? They are all managed?

Posted by njoker555, 11-17-2009, 04:21 PM
yes, in most cases the reseller server would be managed because there isn't much that you can do to change stuff around.

Reseller hosting must be managed, as the resellers can't do that on their own (no root access). VPS can be bought fully, proactively managed, which would mean you could use it only from a reseller-like perspective (sticking to using the control panel). But then, you'd be giving up what is probably the biggest advantage of having a VPS (and reason to pay the premium price), which is the ability to fine tune the hosting environment to suit your needs/target market. A reseller without server admin abilities, is, IMHO, always better off sticking to reseller hosting, even though it is a shared hosting environment and 1 user can more easily affect server performance for everybody.

so one more question is the power that your sites make to server - it about mysql bases and php sessions and maybe online video... and so on... Last edited by Mike V; 11-20-2009 at 02:44 PM.

I use coppermine gallery and forums like xmb forum. One gallery has over 22.000 photos and has been viewed over 7 million times. Will probably increase in the future.
