Best way to prevent spam

Posted by InfusedHosting, 08-21-2013, 01:54 PM
Hi guys, Alec here.. Just a few quick questions regarding spam email. After being blocked recently due to 2 accounts spamming emails on our server. I'd like to get our defences up to ensure this does not happen again as its a ball ache! What do you guys do in order to prevent spam. I have a dedicated server with a few VPS's on and also a server with WHM used for Shared & Reseller clients. Are there any programs that can be running to prevent / filter spam on each server? What would you recommend as currently i have a vps that is burning through bandwidth yet the guy claimed hes using it for a 'reverse proxy'? What is a reverse proxy and is it something i should be worried about? Any tips / ideas would be grateful as i'm still learning in regards to server security. Thanks Alec

WHM can limit the emails per account per hour.

Limit your emails per hour, exim filtering and/or use a 3rd party service such as SpamExperts.

CSF can help limit outgoing emails, we use it instead of the built-in cPanel limits.

As mentioned in the ticket, this sort of issue is the responsibility of the Server Administrator. If you're unsure of what needs done, you should hire someone for assistance. If you have a cpanel server you can do that through Tweak Settings option: On the main CSF page in WHM, find the Firewall Security Level button, in there find the level High button and select that. Save and restart firewall. Make sure the server contact email is correct and working. WHM > Server Configuration > Basic cPanel & WHM Setup, Contact Information tab. CSF should alert you to things on the server at that email address. If it was me, I'd suspend the account mentioned in your ticket and leave it suspended.
