Hostgator or Surpass?

Posted by htechhost, 01-15-2009, 02:48 PM
I have been looking at both of these companies to expand our hosting. I have been with another company for 5 years. I don't plan to switch but my capacity is getting used up on my dedicated servers. I want to get a reseller account somewhere else just to spread my servers around and to add more space. My current provider isn't cheap but its been rock solid. The shared reseller plans are pretty skimpy. So I narrowed my choice down to HostGator and Surpass. I'm leaning twords Surpass because the plans are pretty cheap and a lot of space\bandwidth. However I guess if they are oversold than that isn't a good deal. I have been at this for about 5 years so I pretty know how things go and only need support for sever down issues that I cant handle since they are shared. Hostgator looks great but the plans aren't as nice as Surpass but then again you get what you pay for. I just wanted to hear from people who have either. I have heard some buzz that things at Surpass might not be as good as it was? Or is this just some people having issues. Any commends\input would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Have you read the HostGator TOS? You can't even run a basic website without risking being in violations.

I just read it! Wow! It does look pretty respective. Especially the 90 seconds 25% server utilization among other things. There's a line about using the space as storage. That's interesting. That may make up my mind there.

I prefer Hostgator, they are reliable Have you had any issues with the TOS? For this project I just plan to host email accounts. Maybe a couple websites but mainly grabbing customers who want email only. I think I should be ok. I do like the fact HostGator has their own support where as Surpass outsources.

I was looking for a reseller hosting provider long time ago. I did not choose Hostgator. Because I had saw some bad reviews. They had suspended some reseller accounts because of their one or more resold accounts used many system resource. But a reliable reseller hosting provider suspend resold accounts that used many system resource only. So I swiched Surpasshosting(a member of Hostdime family). Their services generally good. But if your budget is enough when Hostdime is better(little faster support and phone support and little more stable servers. But most things are similar)

You can't even run a basic website without risking being in violations. I've been running basic websites for years there, so it can definitely be done. When you pay for 0.5-2% of what the server has to bring in to make a profit, using 25% for 90 seconds doesn't sound all that bad. When there are hundreds of end users on the server (especially when resellers add up their customers), what would you think would be a fair limit that could reasonably ensure server stability? The more lax the CPU/memory usage rules, the tighter the data transfer allocations would have to be. It's just how things are.

I actually just signed up for host gator. I will be using mostly just be hosting email and a couple small sites. So far so good. support tickets have been 10 or less with a reply. server seems very snappy for what I have on there. I also like that the dc is at the planet. I will be testing for a little bit before I subject any customers. I'm waiting for nameservers to update and dns prop. seems to be taking a while. guess with my luck its always close to 48hrs.

Hostgator has never given me problems before, keep it legit, keep it stable with good code and you will have no problems. When I mean stable I mean don't use outdated scripts or use your site as a spam tool, and if it comes to a point where your site does get suspended, hostgator will work with you to resolve that issue with a phone call or their chat service.

Hostgator would be better imo. Used both in the past. Hostgator always responded fast, and where friendly when I needed them.

I suppose that you can continue with any of them. Once you are not satisfied with one of them you can easily move to another one. You will always have way to go.

Have you read the HostGator TOS? You can't even run a basic website without risking being in violations. What part of their TOS would not allow you to run a normal basic web site? Everything seems pretty normal to me. Please do come back and share your experience with the rest of WHT in a few months Best of luck!

There has to be restrictions when you are sharing a server in order to prevent 1 client from using too much of the resources.

However, how harsh they are enforcing them and their lack of listening to their customers is what makes most people stay away from them.

I noticed the interest in Surpass in this thread (thank you) and wanted to clear a few things if I may. We own our data center in Orlando which gives us the ability to immediately launch shared servers when the need arises. Our abuse and security team is one of the best in the industry. Shared servers are proactively monitored and any problems are resolved with haste and care. Our plans may be very large, but we control our server management in a smart way. Regarding outsourcing, we have had an all in-house team now for a while now. Outsourcing was beneficial in the past when we were a smaller operation - it made business sense for us. Now our internal team of over 100 staff is so interconnected and strong, any type of outsourcing was no longer needed. Thank you again for your interest in Surpass.
