Moving databases

Posted by silverboltz, 11-29-2007, 10:54 AM
I plan on moving some websites from one host to another, the websites have some databases but doesn't use cpanel (the new host does). What's the best way to move these guys?

I would move the databases over to the new server first, then all the files and make sure all is working before changing the dns to point to the new site. If the sites are community based, I would add some banner text to the top of each page saying that all posts/comments made for up to 72 hours may not appear on the new server (just before you download and move the database). -Tim

Probably your new host will be happy to assist you with this. You can take a dump of the databases at your old host and can upload them to the new host or give them the path to download, they will get it restored for you.

Your new host might not have access to get the dump if you do not have a control panel on the old host. If that is the case, your old host would need to generate a dump via ssh.

Super, thanks guys. I'll direct my questions to the new host and see what they have to say.

Hi Silverboltz: If your new host is able to help you great. Otherwise I would do it differently than one of the other posters specified. First if you are concerned about the sites have the most up to date databases, I would: 1. Do one site at a time. 2. First upload all the files and create an empty database and database username. 3. Change the config files (depending on the program) to point to the new empty database. 4. Once everything is set, then do an export/dump of the database and immediately import it. 5. Change the DNS and look for config errors. (As a side note... I add one extra step: because I own many domain names that are just forwarded to a real site. At Step one, I set one of those secondary domain names to point to the new site. I give it an hour or so to propagate. Then I run through my steps above. With the live domain pointing to the site I am able to fix any config errors BEFORE changing the DNS for the real/important domain name to point to the new site.)

You have no control panel with your old host? Or do they offer something like a PhpMyadmin for managing databases? That will help you to take the dumps by yourself.
