I'm starting small, and i would like to know at what point do i need a DNS server. i would be running around 30 VPS. I'm thinking on running the DNS server inside a VPS Thanks

Having dedicated DNS server is a good idea. In case your primary DNS service goes down then DNS service will start working from dedicated DNS server. I would recommend to go with cPanel DNS only service.

I think you should give DNS Made Easy a look: http://www.dnsmadeeasy.com/services/

Many people running DNS on VPS's spread over the globe to help with redundancy. It's standard practice

I agree with Martin-D, I usually choose to have multiple high performance Xen VPS around the world replicating DNS. Have never once considered dedicated servers for DNS only, but each to their own. On a massive scale this would be realistic but we're talking websites in the xxx, xxx's in which case I'd want a dedicated DNS server attached locally.
