Looking for Reseller account

Posted by Buholoco, 09-26-2007, 11:14 AM
Hi all, I'm looking for a good-stable reseller host and I need some advice. First, I'm a complety noob in this, and I would appreciate anything you can say to me. I need to host 4 websites, none of those have big requirements. I believe that 3-4 gb storage will be fine. Each one should have their own mail accounts. Linux based server cpanel and whm ruby on rails if possible php4,5-mysql4,5 pre-installed applications (lot of them ) budget up to $20. I'm from Argentine, spanish support would be nice, I can understand English but I'm not good writting it (as you can see here ) I don't know if I need ssh-private dns, after reading lots of webs I could't understand when and what for are those things.

You can have a look at lunarpages for linux reseller hosting.

Why do you need lots of pre-installed applications? These are convenient, but also introduce new security weaknesses. You'll find that your customers have a tendency to install scripts because it is so easy, but not always use them. You then have a lot of extra junk cluttering up your accounts. Also, installers sometimes install scripts in such a way that they use more resources than necessary. Most any script can be downloaded and installed pretty easily without being included automatically. Just something to consider.

Thanks for your answers I look lunarpages, and I think theire are overselling, 350gb at $6.95 don't seem right. The only thing I need for my websites its a pretty good response speed. Almost every user will be from Latin America, and if the server is slow, my users will complain about this. You are right, I want those just for fun.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I think he's talking about Fantastico, where the applications aren't actually installed, but he has one-click access to install them.

Thats right.. by the way, inno support ruby on rails? I did't see it in your web.. ps: browsing inno web I found some broken links, if you go here: xttp://support.innohosting.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=view and then try to use reseller-webhosting-etc links at the foot

Good catch! I'll have that fixed... I would recommend you contact support for any questions you have

Take a look at Bluewho. They fit your requirements, and they are a very reliable company.

You can try this link http://www.webhostingtalk.com/hostquote.php to request quotes directly from hosting providers. Private dns is your own nameserver based on your domain. SSH is not really necessary as you can request support from the hosting provider.

Lunarpages' reseller program is atypical, as the reseller can only sell one predefined package, instead of getting one big account with the ability to slice it as he pleases. Not perfectly, as the space is a bit smaller than the one mentioned by the OP.

your requirements seem pretty easy. Are you sure you need a reseller account? If so take a look at the offers section or the hostqoute as mentioned. Get your list together and then do some searchs here to see how good of a rep they have. I really recommend taking it easy and just take some time to research. It's a bit overwhelming at first but you'll soon get a grip on who's really good. Also take a look at whreviews.com for a good starting point. Just keep in mind that IMHO this list is getting a bit outdate (and yeah i've talked to ldcdc about this in e-mail = )

Thanks all for your replies, I've decided pick DTH bronce reseller package. So far, everything goes great. I'll visit WHT at least one time every week looking for news and in a month I'll write some review about DTH. I hope it will be a really great review . Best regards.

Who is DTH?

Posted by Nnyan, 09-28-2007, 02:12 PM
Downtownhost? Got a little help with that one. = )

SSH-Private DNS, I dont think there is such thing , maybe you mean SSH and Private DNS which most hosts won't provide SSH (rightfully so) and private DNS with reseller hosting is usually given as standard.

Why is that? SSH access is not insecure when setup correctly. Much like php, SSH can be either extremely secure or left at default and a possible vulnerability. Web hosting is a security-oriented business. Why do people assume SSH isn't as secured as php, ftp, control panel, etc? Simon

mainly because if you know what you are doing you can escalate yourself to root, place files on the server without it being logged, and possibly run keyloggers and get passwords.

Have a look of ResellerZoom, their service are good.

Posted by IHSL, 10-04-2007, 03:12 PM
Nonsense. Whether you know what you're doing or not, you can't just 'escalate to root'. Servers set up by monkeys could have that locked down in a heartbeat. Really, that's so far off the mark it's not even funny. There are genuine concerns for some companies with regards to offering SSH and companies who choose not to offer SSH are well within their rights to do so if they don't want to offer the service. Those concerns, however, are not based around the supposed ability to simply 'escalate to root'. If a company doesn't know how to secure a machine enough to block that simple function then they don't belong in the hosting industry. Simon
