Just started reseler account but want to move host
Posted by blaze11, 10-02-2007, 11:51 PM |
Hi,
I signed up to a reseller account but over the past month their service has been down 4 times. I really can't afford for this to happen especially on mission critical accounts.
I want to move but their service is such a good price and the guy who runs it is a really nice guy.
What do I do? Give him another chance?
look at his costs:
Disk Space 3000MB
Bandwidth 60GB
Monthly $6.50
24/7/365 Support
Telephone support
cPanel/WHM/Fantastico/RVSKINS
PHP5
mysql 5
InnoDB
Free Private Nameservers
Monthly $6.50

Did the host respond promptly when service was down?
What's the possibility that your websites go down again?
Answer these 2 questions and you know whether you should move or not

What was the reason for the downtime? Was it scheduled?

he did respond promptly and i have no idea if this will happen again. that is the issue.

gave no real reason and not scheduled.

You should ask them for specifics on why you are experiencing downtime. Vague responses that provide no indication of real insight usually implies they do not know themselves, or it is a problem they do not want you to know about..
Afterall, what good is support if they can't fix the product?

If you do really understand what 'mission critical accounts' means then you should not host these sites on a 6.50$ reseller account (or even in most cases on a shared enviroment)....
What uptime does your provider guarrantee? 99.9%? 99.99%? 99.5%? 99%? You cannot expect 100% uptime with a few dollars per month! And you cannot have 100% uptime with a few thousand dollars per month

The guarantee would be almost meaningless anyway, as it's just monetary. At most, it might be a bit of an motivator for the host to maintain particular levels of uptime, but it really depends on what the compensations schedule is like. If full refund comes into play only for uptime levels under 90%, there's hardly any pressure on the host.
What was the overall downtime?

Would you be able to share who your host is?

Well, he did at least respond promptly, but I would think that he would have told you what the issue is. Like others have said, it was a vague response, and that shows he doesn't know what it is, or he doesn't want you to know. For me personally, I would not like a vague answer, and I would probably leave. That's just me, but if you do decide to leave, I can recommend Total Choice Hosting. They are a little pricey, but I hardly ever experienced downtime, and if there was it wasn't but a few minutes. Probably a reboot.

So you had 4 down times in the last month. And I wonder how long it was down each time.
I think it will be a hard to decide whether you have to move or not. Because you feel that their service is good and has a very good response times.
So it depends upon how much down time you had in the last month, and also on what is more important for you. There is no meaning if their response time is 2 or 3 minutes but the server goes down every day.

If you want reliability you have to increase your budget at least 3 times.

Ummm, not sure why you just repeated what he said? Signature spamming maybe? It's got nothing to do with how much he had last month, but how much he has had in total and how they have been handled IMO.

Agreed.
And like the others have said find out why the outages have occurred, you then should be able to decide on whether to move or not.

If you are going to be hosting critical accounts why not try a vps? Although a vps may not be the perfect way to go either. You can find some really good and inexpensive dedicated servers. Don't expect them to have alot of space though, you will definatly have to increase your budget to about 50.00 a month.

The costs are not great and many people experiment before they find their niche. So experiment and find your tune!
I always believe your client is more important than your provider.

What kind of business are you going to run on a 6.50 monthly investment? I see a growing number of people on these forums who expect a reseller account for next to nothing, then expect top of the line reliability and service.

Can't blame them totally, when they have to compete with providers who sell 100GB for just $9.99/mo or less, while buying reseller hosting at $2/GB.

They don't have to and they shouldn't. You can't fight price wars (and win) when you're a small provider with a tight budget.
Reseller accounts have their advantages. More control isn't necessarily something you wish for, as it comes with responsibilities you might not be prepared for. Not to mention that a budget VPS would not be a route to performance; on the contrary.
