Setting up 'vanity' name servers with eNom?
Posted by briangriffin, 08-23-2012, 03:59 PM |
Hi,
I'd like to configure our eNom account so that all new names we sell will have ns1.ourdomain.com, ns2.ourdomain.com etc. as their name servers but point at the eNom public servers where the names are actually hosted. It's a 'nice to have' thing really.
Frankly the eNom support people have underwhelmed me so far and keep saying I need to ask WHMCS because our reseller account was registered through them - despite my query being about setting up eNom from within our eNom web login. No, me neither.
Has anyone setup 'vanity' name servers with eNom and if so; any pointers please?
Thanks in aance.

Its true, you are a sub-reseller of WHMCS. Support should be handled through them.
Domains > Advanced > Register a nameserver.
Though I dont think they have a vanity dns program. If you want to have your own custom nameservers then you will need to manage that on your own.

WHMCS and eNom changed that policy so that enom takes care of support -- http://blog.whmcs.com/?t=51074 -- so provide that to them and see what they say (and post back if they say something different then that post says).
However, for the question at hand, I do not think they have vanity nameservers. You could technically setup ns1.domain.com and such to CNAME their ns1 and such, it just wont be pretty in DNS reports and some resolvers will freak out. (so not recommended)

Understood, thanks @steven99 - I had no idea about the support position. Nice if eNom had said that instead of leaving me confused as to what on Earth the problem had to do with WHMCS!
In fact I've had no e-mail confirmation from either WHMCS or eNom after signing up for my eNom account...let alone 'for support go to WHMCS'. Very odd - after signing up the process just said "You can now login to your reseller account...." Good job I remembered the details. LOL!
As to CNAMEs - I was considering an A record(s) in mydomain.com with the eNom name server address(es). The thought was:
1) Transfer mydomain.com into eNom so it's in their system
2) Create suitable glue record if not already done as part of the transfer process
3) Create ns1.mydomain.com ns2.mydomain.com A-records in my eNom hosted zone
4) Go to Domains > Advanced > Register a Nameserver and add ns1.mydomain.com + ns2.mydomain.com
Still a bad idea?
Thanks again,
Steve

Registering a nameserver is actually creating a glue record at the parent nameservers. If your ns1 and ns2 are already registered you should find the glue records are retained when you transfer the domain, or you could equally leave it where it is. Either way I don't think there's any restriction on registering your own custom nameserver pointing to whatever IP you like (including eNom's).
The problem with this approach though is that eNom could change the IP addresses of their nameservers at any time, leaving your nameservers pointing to the old IPs which would no longer work.

Marvellous, thanks @foobic. Understood about the IP change too.

Actually on reflection I think I'm going to stop being lazy and remind myself how much fun BIND is to work with instead.

That would likely be more efficient than keeping track of enom's IPs and updating them. If you want a CP and not deal with bind directly, get webmin and stay lazy.
